Technology can impact anyone’s life at any moment and can have very negative effects on your health. There are many reasons why screen time is harmful. Many people believe that screen time is helpful towards children and have many positive outcomes. However, I believe screen time harms children in many ways because it can negatively affect a person’s health, children to have trouble reading emotions, and can impact human connection. While there are positive outcomes for screen time, there are also many negative effects. One effect of screen time is how screen time can affect a person’s health. According to source 5, “A recent survey by the toy company Melissa & Doug says 70 percent of parents want their children to spend less time watching electronic media and 62 percent want them to spend less time on electronic devices.” This evidence shows how much parents are wanting their kids away from screen time to save them from being affected by screen time. Source 5, also says, “Studies show that screen time is associated with health problems. It can lead to higher levels of being overweight, shorter attention spans and more mental problems, including depression, or sadness that lasts for some time.” This explains how …show more content…
Source 1 says “Children’s social skills may be declining as they have less time for face-to-face interaction due to their increased use of digital media, according to a UCLA psychology study.” Source 1 also says that “UCLA scientists found that sixth-graders who went five days without even glancing at a smartphone, television or other digital screen did substantially better at reading human emotions than sixth-graders from the same school who continued to spend hours each day looking at their electronic devices.” Both pieces of evidence show how much screen time can cause children to lose the ability to read
Television, or screen time, has become a large part of today's society. Whether it's by way of smart-phones, a television, a computer, or a tablet, screen time has negative effects on the cognitive ability of children and adolescents. It has even been proven that it can lead to Alzheimer's disease when a person, in the age range of 20-60 years old, views an hour more than the recommended amount of screen time a day (Sigman 14). In children, the amount of screen time viewed has a relationship with the likelihood of developing a deficit in his attention span; the longer a child views screen time, the more likely he is to be diagnosed with an attention disorder. Screen time, or television, can cause attention disorders and other problem with cognitive abilities in children and adolescents that effect the education they can comprehend.
A study done by Stanford said that when children spend more time with their technology instead of using that time for face-to-face communication, their social skills might decrease. A professor from Stanford University, Clifford Nas...
Television is a distraction for children and can hurt their cognitive abilities if they watch too much because it is non interactive. In the International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity Helena Duch and colleagues mentioned that the American Academy of Pediatrics advises, “parents avoid exposing children 2 and under to screen media, a nationally representative survey found that 68% of children under the age of 2 use screen media in a typical day, and that average screen time was 2.05 hours per day” (Dutch et al 2). Children live in a world full of screens, ranging from iPhones, TVs, to tablets and computers. Drastic brain development occurs during the ages of 1-3 and exposing them to too much screen time of any kind can have negative effects on them (Hopkins 27). Putting them in front of a screen also steals away from times they could be talking, playing, and interacting with their surroundings. Pediatrician Dr. Michael Rich claims that shows d...
A child's overall development can be mental, physical, and emotional. In the article “Give me that old time recess”, the author discussed the negative consequences of children losing playtime. “In a growing number of studies, diminished opportunities for outdoor playtime have been linked with school difficulties, increased childhood anxiety, disconnection from nature, attention deficit disorder, and the epidemic of childhood obesity” (Gross-Loh Par 4). This quote is important because children today are suffering more from obesity, and attention deficit disorders due to the decrease of structured play. Children are becoming less active due to the the dependency on technology. The increase in obesity is the result of the rise in children having smart phones. With children having smartphones, they lose the desire to play outside. The lack of play causes an increase in depression among children and teens. (Tanner Par 10). This is important because today’s generation has a large dependency on technology “Sixty-five percent of children under eight years old watch television daily. On average, they spend about an hour and a half (100 minutes to be exact) watching TV every day.” (Conrad Par 3). Childrens dependency on technology is related to depression because many children have a hard time communicating and socializing with other children due to technology ruining children's interpersonal skills (Bindley Par 4).
Having a lot of screen time affect kids brain health. Of course, they are nice to keep your kids entertained, but we all need to know that t if kids have too much screen time such as 4-6 or more hours, they could have brain function problems the kids brains will soon not be able to function. Without their brain functioning kids could have a hard time with many things like school,
44).. That device get in the way of children playing and exploring with other children. That children play is very important in young age because they will use their imagination and be creative while their playing and socialize with other children. That children will perform better in school and develop problem solving while they are playing( ).Electronic device wont help them with their play and that to much screen time can interfere their social development because they would not want to interact with other children.
Firstly, excessive exposure to screens and electrical devices is shown to drastically effect a growing child's social skills. These skills are invaluable and without them children are incapable of making and keeping loyal friends; more likely to suffer from behavioural issues and more likely to be uncomfortable speaking to people: especially their elders and people unbeknown to them. A long term research team, The Millennium Cohort Study Group, has conducted a study consisting of nineteen thousand children born in 2000 and 2001. In following this group of children, the study group has discovered that children who are prone to watching or interacting with electrical devices for more than three hours a day are more likely to suffer from behavioural and relationship-orientated problems by the time they were seven than those who spent less time on their devices. This study demonstrates the damaging effect these devices have...
Why Parents Should Limit Screen Time 87% of kids ages twelve to seventeen are online or have access to the internet. When used properly, the internet can have many benefits and advantages. It can be used as a learning tool and can help students perform better in school. This also means that kids are constantly being exposed to this dangerous web of information. If technology and the internet aren’t used right, they can be hazardous to a child.
I believe that to much screen time is bad for children. I believe that the benifits of young children watching TV is not enough to out way the risks of children watching TV.
Many people have a wide range of opinions on whether technology is having a positive influence on our children or a negative, there is a vast amount of evidence to support both of these arguments. Technology can refer to so many things, but there are three main parts of technology that have the greatest effect on our children: video games, television/media, and computers. The modern technologies we have today are so powerful because they attract our genetic biases, that the human brain has a tremendous love for visually presented information. Video games, television, movies and computer programs are all very visually oriented and therefore they attract and keep the attention of children easily. By far the largest concern of technology today is video games.
It’s 4 p.m. on a Monday. A child sits on the couch playing games on their phone and checking social media. There is much speculation about whether or not what the child is doing is more good or bad for them. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) is an organization that is committed to the health of children and young adults. They believe that screen time should be limited to two hours a day for adolescents but some argue that the recommended time should be raised to four hours.
Along with other side effects such as missleading information, forming biased opinions, and praising ideas and concepts of those who aren't truly making screen displays for education but for entertainment. Even still screen time can be good and used well for children, programs such as Khan Academy are helpful guides through subjects a kid might be struggling with. The contradiction of screen time is it needs to be monitered to an extent not of time but of content. It is imparative that parents support their children and guide them, so that even when they are not the main source of information they may still be morally helpfull guides. This said, limiting screen time is another factor which must be calculated depending on screen content.
According to The Huffington Post, people are on their devices for, on average, about eleven hours and fifty-two minutes a day. That is almost half a day and a lot longer than most people sleep or work. People have not yet realized how they or their families are being affected by this constant use of technology. As a result of technology increasing, children are experiencing health problems, school issues, and social problems. First and foremost, health problems due to the increase in technology usage is becoming a bigger issue than one might think.
To continue, everyone can agree that children need a healthy environment to develop cognitive, social, emotional, physical and linguistic development. How much technology can improve or distract from these essential skills varies with age. The impact and implications of technology tools on young children has been studied and researched through the Let’s Move Childcare initiative and results concluded that little to no “screen time” is preferred for children under the age of two. For children two years or older, the recommended “screen time” is limited to thirty minutes per week in the classroom setting. (White House, 2011.)
It is also shown by studies an inverse relationship between the times spent using internet and daily physical activity. The time spent on the internet and other forms of entertainment media significantly decrease a child’s time for activities needed for the healthy growth like playing, reading, storytelling and spending time with friends and family. It also have confirmed a harmful effect of using internet more than one to two hours per day on academic
