Have you ever wondered why kids on their devices are more bratty or less cooperative than the rest? Well, it is due to their too much time spent on electronics. Therefore, there should be a two-hour recommendation for screen time.
Spending time in front of electronics is taking away kids abilities to express their emotions. There has been a study published that sixth graders who spent five days were significantly better at reading emotions than kids who spent time on electronics. There were showed pictures of fifty faces, which were all showing different emotions, the kids who had been not on electronics were able to identify the emotions far better than the other kids. That was only five days, imagine what results would be shown in more than that amount."When babies are babies, they're learning about human interaction with face-to-face time and with speaking to parents and having things they say modeled back to them," she says. In contradiction, watching TV at such a young age has its disadvantages. Greenfield also thinks that families should make a plan for their kids on how much screen time should be allowed. Even if it isn’t two hours, having a limit still helps control screen time. This can be helpful also for kids to learn how to take directions. If their parent says, “Bobby time to get off the computer”, they will learn how to listen to that and become more cooperative. Watching TV at a young age may benefit some learning areas, however, limiting your child’s screen time will teach them the lessons of patience, cooperation, and listening to others. Those are skills that are far more valuable than learning your shapes or colors, that someone cannot learn on television. In “Television Harms Children”, Ann Vorisek White claims that the intellectual and cognitive development of children who frequently watch television is threatened. To support this claim, she points to the findings that “the more television children watch, the weaker their language skills and imaginations” (White, 2006). Before the brain fully matures around age 12, it is in the stage of rapid development. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) “recommends that children under the age of two not watch TV or videos, and that older children watch only one to two hours per day of nonviolent, educational TV” (White, 2006). A study from the AAP (as cited in White, 2006) found that the average American child watches four hours of television every day. Considering "expression and reasoning are not automatic" abilities, young children who routinely watch television eventually become "passive and nonverbal" to stimuli in their environment (White, 2006). Since the normality of curiosity and imaginations of young children are the foundation of how they learn, remaining passive for extended periods of time affects their intellectual and moral development.

Children in this century rely on television to keep them entertained and educated instead of entertaining and educating themselves by participating in activities, which will teach them a lot more in life then the actual television. In the current society, there are new technologies every day. As these different technologies increase, the number of users are also increasing. These users are dedicating their time to the Internet. It could be for work, school, or social interactions. School districts are now afraid that students will spend more time on the Internet. Instead, they should be spending their time studying. As a result of this epidemic, schools made an approach to the idea of “Shut Down Your Screen” week. This idea requires the staff and students to have no contact with any type of technology for a whole week. Teachers are not allowed to teach with any SmartBoards, projectors, laptops, or computers. Students are only allowed to learn with textbooks and write on paper. Bayless High School should take part in “Shut Down Your Screen” week because the idea will help students learn better. Also, the usage of social interactions will decrease.
Television, or screen time, has become a large part of today's society. Whether it's by way of smart-phones, a television, a computer, or a tablet, screen time has negative effects on the cognitive ability of children and adolescents. It has even been proven that it can lead to Alzheimer's disease when a person, in the age range of 20-60 years old, views an hour more than the recommended amount of screen time a day (Sigman 14). In children, the amount of screen time viewed has a relationship with the likelihood of developing a deficit in his attention span; the longer a child views screen time, the more likely he is to be diagnosed with an attention disorder. Screen time, or television, can cause attention disorders and other problem with cognitive abilities in children and adolescents that effect the education they can comprehend.
We spend about 1068 hours per year using technology. There is a national debate about limit screen time. They have gone so far that Oregon State Legislature design task-force to investigate hidden costs of technology. This why students and parents should limit the amount of time we use technology to an extent. Some reasons why is we are becoming a self-centered culture, we are being addicted to it, and we aren’t learning much from technology.

Firstly, we can get a lot of new knowledge through learning. Television can be a powerful teacher. By watching we can learn valuable lessons about racial harmony, cooperation, kindness, simple arithmetic and the alphabet through an educational television format. Some public television programs stimulate visits to the zoo, libraries, bookstores, museums and other active recreational settings, and educational videos can certainly serve as powerful pro social teaching devices. The educational value has been shown to improve the reading and learning skills of its viewers.
