There are many different genres and subgenres within the world of music, each with its own unique sound, beat, and stylistic elements. One particular subgenre of the much broader genre of rock music is that of Celtic rock. This musical subgenre is of Irish, Scottish, and Welsh decent; these countries are often referred to as the Celtic nations. Although Celtic rock stylistically retains the rock ensemble of guitars, bass, and drums, it incorporates cultural themes found in Celtic countries that otherwise would not exist in the mostly American invention of rock music. While Celtic rock is perhaps a lesser-known subgenre of rock music, its influence on the overall genre and in certain countries cannot be understated. Celtic rock originally stems …show more content…
According to Jessica Appelbaum, the top 5 bands in the business are: Gaelic Storm, The Tossers, Enter the Haggis, The Killdares, Black 47, and the Horslips. Gaelic Storm has been one of the biggest names in Celtic rock for a while by producing traditional Irish music with a modern touch and they just published their ninth album called Chicken Boxer. The Tossers, who have achieved local popularity in Chicago through their album Long Dim Road, embrace their Irish roots of old and beautiful music. Toronto-based Enter the Haggis plays world-fusion music, which means that they draw on styles other than Celtic rock. However, their mostly Celtic rock album Whitelake was entirely fan funded due to their massive devoted fan base. The Texas-based band called The Killdares include renowned fiddle and bagpipe players Roberta Rast and Matt Willis, which are commonly used instruments in a Celtic rock ensemble. Black 47’s Irish roots stem from its name, an ode to the summer of 1847, which was the worst year of the Great Irish Famine. Finally, Horslips was one of the original pioneers of the subgenre and Gaelic mythology, traditional Irish music, and rock. Although these are only some of the names within the world of Celtic rock music, the popularity of these bands pushes them above the pack and makes them the flag bearers of the …show more content…
The most familiar influences on Celtic rock are that of electric folk music and the styles and rhythms of traditional rock music. However, another somewhat surprising influence on the creation of Celtic rock is pop music and its many variations. Celtic rock also influenced music genres such as country, blues, and rock and roll, as well as helping to start the Pan-Celtic movement. The Pan-Celtic movement is essentially the political movement that strove to promote greater contact and unity between the Celtic nations. The reinforcement of the Pan-Celtic by Celtic rock has helped to bring together those with a shared heritage (countries such as Ireland, Scotland, and Wales) and to bolster cultural identity. Everything else notwithstanding, perhaps the most influential aspect of the creation of Celtic rock has been to enhance musical
What emerged after the explosion of rock and roll in the 1950s abandoned the roll and has now come to be known just as classic rock. This rock that was created following the decade of The King became a completely unique and different sound that changed the musical landscape and what was once a single, unified genre gave way for multitudes of variation in its sounds. These new sounds, that came mostly from abroad, had been notably influenced by the American rock of the 1950s, such as Elvis, Buddy Holly and Chuck Berry. These pioneers of rock came to be the essential reason for the arrival of the British Invasion and other sounds that defined the decade of the 1960s.

Rock ‘n’ roll and 20th Century Culture According to Philip Ennis, rock ‘n’ roll emerged from the convergence of social transformations which resulted from World War II (Ryan 927). Despite its pop culture origins, rock music is arguably one of the strongest cultural factors to develop in this century. Artists such as Lennon, McCartney and Dylan defined the emotions of a generation and, in the last decade, it as even been acknowledged by members of the establishment which it hoped to change as a major influence in the country. In order to understand how rock went from a sign of rebellion to a cultural icon, it is necessary to understand where it came from.
Although the style of ‘Rock music’ is easily adaptable to many different sounds, it is still thoroughly identified by its definingly amplified rhythm. The sudden worldwide popularity of rock and roll resulted in an unparalleled social impact. Rock ‘n’ Roll influenced lifestyles, fashion, attitudes, and language in a way few other social developments have equaled. The social impact is so large that rock stars are worshipped worldwide. In its early years, many adults condemned the style of music, placing a stigma on its name, and forbid their children from listening and following its ways.

Rock music is a term that should be familiar. Originally dubbed “rock and roll” in the 1940’s and 1950’s, rock and roll is almost always fronted by an electrical guitar and heavily influenced by blues, R&B, and even country music. By the late 1960’s and early 1970’s rock and roll began to be shortened to just “rock music”, and the entire style starting branching out into other sub-genres such as punk rock, heavy metal, garage rock, hard rock, among others. The sub-genre in question however is Alternative Rock, which is generally defined as despite following the fundamentals of rock music, it strays away from what is considered “mainstream” at the time by using concepts such as extensive underground music association, muddied or distorted guitars, more prominent use of power chords, and even a sort of rebellious or defiant attitude in lyrics and sound.

There is so much information on Rock that I will have to have questions I want to find the answers to about the music. My first question will be, "What instruments are commonly used in a rock band?" This will not be hard to answer as it is a very easy question that has a definite answer. The next question will be, "Who were the first artists to produce Rock music?" This is also an easy question were I will discuss the first Rockers. Continuing on, my next question will ask, "How was the term Rock and Roll' created, and by who?" This may turn out to be a hard question to answer because I am sure there a multiple answers. "Has Rock become more or less popular since its inception?" will be my next question. For this question I will have to look for a survey or poll of some type and present its data. My final question will be, "How has the Music been changed over the years and who changed it?" This will also be an easy question, albeit a long answer. For that question I will be referring to Alternative and Grunge Rock, my preferred form of the music.
...congregations of grunge believers. This is where the most amateur alternative bands debut and discover their little local fame. Obviously, most of them don’t make it to the top. Our society is still very commercially oriented and the grunge phenomenon is not as large as to promote all but very few bands to be the representatives of the movement.
Music plays a huge role in the structure of a society. It can have both negative and positive influence on cultures and communities. First, musical sounds and instruments can be a dividing factor between the people within the same culture. These opposing social and economic identities within these cultures can lead unnecessary animosity between the members. However, music can also be one of the forces that unite members of a culture and provide a sense pride for everyone. This makes it easier for people to display their identification to that culture.
I personally have always enjoyed the different and unique sounds of the instruments that the musicians in rock & roll bands could make using the synthesizer, their electric guitars, th...
