The Scope of Nursing Practice defines the “who”, “what”, “where”, “when”, “why”, and “how” of nursing practice. Who are nurses? Nurses encompass the largest segment of licensed providers in the United States labor force and the reason for this is because nurses fulfill various positions providing direct and indirect patient care, research, administration, education, and community based care, to name a few. In addition, nurses are people who are educated, professional, ethical, and above all caring individuals who strive to provide exceptional patient-centered care. What is nursing? The “where” of nursing is simple because nursing is everywhere; nursing is wherever there is a patient/client in need of attention, education, or support. Nursing application is provided in homes, hospitals, community centers, schools, communities, long-term care facilities, and administrative offices. Another natural concept of nursing is “when”; nursing occurs whenever there is a need for a nurse’s understanding, care, guidance, collaboration, experience, and intelligence. When nurses incorporate evidence-based practice, knowledge, and research into their practice they are able to provide safe and goal oriented outcomes for patients and families. The “why” in nursing is categorized by the nursing’s response of the shifting needs of society. Nurses must adapt to the cultural essentials in order to accomplish a positive patient or family outcome. Lastly, the “how” is expressed by resources, approaches, procedures, and style a registered nurse performs professionally. I am attracted to leadership because a healthy work environment is essential for optimal nursing practice. There are numerous factors that affect a healthcare setting, so in order to combat these obstacles by being a nurse manager it would allow myself and others to make a positive difference in the field. The ANA defines a Healthy Nurse framework as “one who actively focuses on creating and maintain a balance and synergy of physical, intellectual, emotional, social, spiritual, personal, and professional well-being. Healthy nurses live life to the fullest capacity, across the wellness-illness continuum, as they become stronger role models, advocates, and educators, personally, for their families, their communities, and work environments, and ultimately for their patients (ANA, 2015). I plan to continue my nursing education beyond an associate degree level because I desire to be a solid role-model, advocate, and educators, so one day I can lead other nurses and healthcare
