A final large theme throughout the book was Scientology’s lack of the use of internet and outside education. Young kids who entered or grew up in the church were more than often taken out of school and put in positions to work long hours for the church. If you were to attend school you would be going to a private school where Scientology was the main backbone of the teachings. Many of these kids as adults were ill prepared for the real world and then found themselves stuck within the church because they couldn’t find a job elsewhere. Along with the lack of education, the Scientology community was told not to use the internet. Any research or reading articles on the church was banned. To keep the majority at the bottom they must be suppressed and poorly educated with lack of any knowledge that could hurt the few at the top. This style of running the church is a very tyrant system and should be a red flag indicator to anyone in and outside the community.
B: What fundamentally comprises a religion, and does Scientology in fact merit this Constitutionally-protected label? I think as we have talked about many times throughout the semester that religion is a set of held beliefs by a community and from the community’s behaviors, takes action upon these beliefs.
