The initial ideas of the continental drift hypothesis led to the development of plate tectonic theory. In order for the theory to be accepted, the whole scientific concept had to undergo the extensive process of scientific method. This involves an initial Observation leading to a hypothesis, attempting to explain the occurring observation. In order for this to be determined, predictions are made to explain the specific hypotheses, which are then backed up by evidence, finally leading to having a generally accepted theory. In this essay, the process in which the individual parts of the scientific method were used in the context of the continental drift hypothesis and theory of plate tectonics will be outlined whilst showing how contemporaries react negatively to incomplete scientific method. The continental drift hypothesis is an example of how a hypothesis is made based on observation. It also shows how contemporaries can reject hypotheses until substantial evidence is found. The continental drift hypothesis was first introduced by Alfred Wegener in 1914. He suggested that at one stage in time, all of the continents were combined together as one, which he named ‘Pangaea’, and they eventually drifted apart to be in the positions they are at today (see figure 1.0 below). This came from the observation that the coastlines of the continents could be combined together to make one, like a jigsaw puzzle, specifically the ‘parallelism of the Atlantic coastlines’ (Skinner, Porter & Botkin pp. 66). Another observation that contributed to the hypothesis is the fact that similar flora and fauna can found on completely different continents, where there was no obvious way for them to travel in between. The coastal belt of the Franciscan Complex is composed of the youngest and least deformed units and makes up the western quarter of all Franciscan rocks. The rocks of the coastal belt are composed of arkosic sandstones, andesitic graywackes, and quartzofeldspathic graywackes interbedded with radiolarian chert (turbidite deposits) (Blake and Jones, 1981). These sedimentary rocks suggest a depositional environment of deep-sea fan systems with both oceanic and continental provenance. Parts of the belt show evidence of later metamorphism, principally due to subduction. Low-grade blueschist mineral facies are indicated by the presence of minerals such as laumonite and prehnite-pumpellyite (Blake and Jones, 1981). All rock units show evidence of thrust (imbricate) faulting due to the compressional forces of subduction. Ages of the coastal belt run from as little as 40 Ma (Eocene) to as old as 100 Ma (middle Cretaceous).

To set the stage, we must go back 270 million years ago when a majority of the earth’s land masses were collected together in a single continent, a supercontinent, named Pangaea (Encyclopedia Britannica, 1). Historian Alfred Crosby explained that this collected all of earth’s land based biology into a single place, creating a single Darwinian “arena for competition” (Crosby, 1). Or in other words, one big evolutionary pot. Crosby also explains that 180 million years ago, Pangea split into two major land masses, what is now the Americas in the Western Hemisphere as one land mass and Euro-Asia and Africa as the second lass mass (Crosby, 1). What was once a single evolutionary pot, was now two, allowing for plant and animal life to take different evolutionary paths. These two worlds remained relatively separate from each other until the arrival of Christopher Columbus and other European explorers. That contact between the old world and the new world brought two distinct evolutionary arenas crashing into each other and returned a majority of the earth’s landmass into a single Darwinian pot, (Crosby, 1) This was Crosby’s re-knitting of the torn “seams of Pangaea.”
With the recent earthquakes in California, many are worried about the next earthquake that could be the potential “big” one that many geologists have been predicting for many years. The Cascadia subduction zone is also known as the CSZ megathrust fault. It is roughly 1000km long, a dipping fault that stretches from the Northern Vancouver Islands to Cape Mendocino, California. The zone passes through British Columbia, Washington, Oregon and into California. The Cascadia region has experienced several types of earthquakes and it is very likely to experience similar quakes in the near future.

These same pressures continued and overturned the fold which eventually caused them to break along a great low-angle fault (Beaumont,1978). The western limb of the fold was driven upward and eastern placing older layers of rock on top of younger ones. The younger layers of rock include cretaceous shales and sandstones. The slice of crust has been moved more than 15 miles toward the east, the surface it moved through is called the Lewis Overthrust. (Dyson,1957). Years of erosion finally exposed the fault which was buried throughout its early years. Erosion then separated several remnants, Chief Mountain is the best known which consists of Altyn limestone, exposed on its base is the Lewis Overthrust fault.
