The 6-8th graders had to do all of this and also present this to the judges who were also scientists and to your class. For my project it was based on loud music and your heart rate. My hypothesis was, if I had a group of people who listen to loud pop, jazz and rock, then their heart rate will increase. I had a lot of fun doing this project and also presenting it to my classmates. It was also fun presenting it to the science fair judges. I came up with different recipes and made three different kinds of cotton candy cookies. I asked all my classmates to taste them and provide their vote on which one they like the best. The cookie the majority of the class liked was the first one I made. When I was making cookies and researching I learned a lot! For example, did you know that drinking milk can increase your chance in developing heart disease, cancer and diabetes? I didn’t either until I was researching about milk because I thought I might use it in my recipe! Also, the first time I made a cookie it didn’t turn out very well. It tasted disgusting and like flour! When I tried again, I had someone help and she told us what I did wrong. I learned that if you put both butter and margarine, it will taste better. I also learned that you need both baking soda and baking powder to make the cookie rise. You might be wondering why the first cookie I made won. The “Doing Nothing” experiment exposed me to a new way of seeing things and also a new level of awkwardness. Standing still in a public place for ten minutes, with people walking past you and starring you down like you are some crazy person is quite the experience. You begin to understand that people take great notice of anything that seems out of the ordinary to them. This is because our society has developed and enacted so many societal norms in today’s day and age.
In this inquiry the relationship between force and mass was studied. This inquiry presents a question: when mass is increased is the force required to move it at a constant velocity increased, and how large will the increase be? It is obvious that more massive objects takes more force to move but the increase will be either linear or exponential. To hypothesize this point drawing from empirical data is necessary. When pulling an object on the ground it is discovered that to drag a four-kilogram object is not four times harder than dragging a two-kilogram object. I hypothesize that increasing the mass will increase the force needed to move the mass at a constant rate, these increases will have a liner relationship.

Through this program I had first-hand access to some of the brightest young minds in both the United States and the world. The sharing among students of ideas and experiences in science, and in other areas as well, was enlightening. I felt like I had the chance to absorb knowledge from those around me. This environment spread beyond the students and also included the faculty and speakers. We had access to incredible faculty who were able to give much to the experience and share their own science insights. The program also brought in speakers and other science professionals from around the world who were at the top of their respective fields. This festival gave me real access to the movers and shakers of the science world, an experience beyond any available to me anywhere else.
Freshman year it was one of the last big science projects of the school year and my teacher reveals a list of the groups and I see my group and they just stared at each other. I have learned several valuable things from this project experience. First, it’s okay to not know how to do something right away. Ask, observe and experiment. Doing so will greatly enhance my ability to do it correctly and continue to learn. Second, I learned that this can be an experience in frustration if I always try to not make waves. My social experiment, took way too much thought to complete. I could not think about what I should do for this project until about noon on that beautiful Sunday. I invited a couple of friends to go with me to Walmart, but I was unsuccessful and I only got one friend to accompany me. Even so, we had fun.
On June 13th, I participated in a Young Debaters Program with other students from our school competing against various junior high schools in a debate contest. I arrived too early, was wearing a far too casual dress, and was walking in extremely painful shoes. I had butterflies in my stomach and I felt terrible. The debate was absolutely awful, but the experiences I had with my friends during and after the debate were some of the most memorable occurrences of my 7th grade year.
