This is how Capricorn Anderson is NOT a hero in Schooled by Gordon Korman. First, Capricorn goes to Claverage Middle School aka C Average. Cap first isn’t one is that because he knows how to drive that young, charging 30 dollars to Mr.Kasigi and also sending money for the halloween dance to a charity. Finally, Capricorn then leaves Rain’s house at the end without permission from her and plus she said no. This is how Capricorn Anderson is not a hero. First, Capricorn knows how to drive at that early and he actually got arrested and got released a few times within the story. The text states””You’re in a lot of trouble, kid!” The police made Cap lie facedown in the aisle while they cuffed his hands behind his back”(Korman 76). This quote shows how Cap had got in trouble for driving the school bus and someone called the dispatchers and the police and ambulance came over and eventually they arrested Cap for driving too young and without a license. This is how Capricorn is not a hero by driving underage. Next, Capricorn is not a hero by charging 30 dollars to a principal’s account for writing an insufficient check. The text states”Dear Customer, We are returning this check to you because your account is overdrawn and the transaction cannot be honored. A service fee of $30.00 …show more content…
has been charged to your account”(Korman 151). This quote shows that Capricorn was elected class president in the beginning but he instead of writing to the halloween dance funds, he wrote to a charity instead. This is how Cap is not a hero by not doing what he was supposed to do. Finally, Capricorn is not a hero because he is going to the halloween dance at the end and he even went there without permission.
The text states”I’d asked Rain just that morning if I could go, and she’d said no.”All that’s behind you know, Cap. Our life is here””(Korman 180) and “Dear Rain, I’m sorry, but this is just too important. Don’t worry about me, I’ll be home soon. Cap”(Korman 182). This quote shows that Capricorn wanted to go at first but he can’t go because Rain wouldn’t let him go to the dance. At the end Cap decides to go and he just gets out of the house without permission and just goes to the party. This is how Capricorn is not a hero because he doesn't listen to his
grandmother. This was how Capricorn Anderson in Schooled by Gordon Korman was not a hero. First, Cap knows how to drive at an age that early and next he charged 30 dollars to the principal’s account for not saying what he tells him to do. After that, Capricorn goes to the party at the school without her grandmother’s permission of saying yes or no. Finally, this is how Capricorn Anderson in Schooled by Gordon Korman was not a hero in the whole book.
In the Lilies of the Field by William E. Barrett, Homer and Mother Maria both display straightforward, hardworking, and stubborn character traits. Firstly, Homer and Mother Maria both display a straightforward personality by being brutally honest about their opinions. For example, when Mother Maria asks Homer to build a chapel, Homer speaks his mind by telling her he does not want to build it. Mother Maria shows her straightforward behavior during Homer’s stay at the convent. One morning, when Homer sleeps in late, Mother to becomes extremely upset and is not afraid to show how she feels about him. Secondly, both Homer and Mother Maria display a hardworking spirit. Homer is a hardworking man because after finally agreeing to build the chapel,
In The Big Field, author Mike Lupica explores the theme, "Success uses motivation as fuel." Lupica portrays this theme through the main character, Hutch. Throughout the entire book, Hutch, a young boy that has just recently joined a highly talented baseball team, displays moments that exemplify this main theme. Hutch and his team have a chance to play in the stadium of the Miami Marlins, a Major League Baseball team, as long as they can keep winning games and advancing through a challenging tournament; however, Hutch's favorite position on the field, shortstop, the position located between 2nd and 3rd base, has already been filled on the team. Unfortunately, Hutch gets a demotion from shortstop, to second base, the position located between 1st base and 2nd base. Although Hutch was disappointed and melancholy about the switch in position, he was even more upset about the downgrading of leadership, since the
“The chilling truth is that his story could have been mine. The tragedy is that my story could have been his” (Moore, 2011). This quote perfectly describes the book The Other Wes Moore. This book was a story about two people who have the same name and grew up in similar environments, but had very different lives. The author of the book, Mr. Moore, became successful and was given the opportunity to receive “one of the most prestigious academic awards for students in the world” (Moore, 2011). On the other side of the spectrum, the other Wes Moore “will spend every day until his death behind bars for an armed robbery that left a police officer and a father of five dead” (Moore, 2011). Mr. Moore decided to contact the
Literary villains are all around us. For instance, Voldemort from Harry Potter and Darth Vader from Star Wars. What makes a villain? They will go through anyone or damage anything to reach their goal. No matter how small or how tall they are, anyone can be a villain. One of the worst literary villains is Erik Fisher from Tangerine, written by Edward Bloor. He is a liar and a thief. Those traits are what makes the best villains. Throughout the book, Erik shows that he is a villain through his vile and offensive behavior, his need for power, and his insanity.
In The Other Wes Moore, the author and a neighbor have the same name, Wes Moore, and they both begin their lives in similar ways. However, as their lives progress, they begin to part. For example, both “lost” their fathers when they were young. Because of the way their mothers respond to this loss, the boys’ lives begin to separate. Both mothers have different responses to challenges in general, which eventually leads them to respond to their child’s actions in contrasting ways. Throughout this novel, readers learn that depending on how a mother decides to react to the negative actions of their child’s actions, the child can either lead a successful life or lead a life of failure.
Julius Caesar is mentioned throughout the book, A Long Way Gone, many times. In A Long Way Gone, Ishmael would be reading Julius Caesar or a soldier would be reciting some of the speeches in the play. In Chapter 12 of A Long Way Gone, Ishmael is called over to talk with Lieutenant Jabati. Then, Lieutenant Jabati showed Ishmael the book he was reading, which was Julius Caesar, and asked Ishmael if he had ever heard of the book. Ishmael had read the book in school, and began to recite a speech from the book. After this happened, Lieutenant Jabati and Corporal Gadafi used emotional arguments to motivate the people in the village to stay there and support the military. Also, Lieutenant showed all the people in the village dead bodies to help
People have goals everyday, believe it or not some people think that dreams aren't worth it. I believe that it is worth it to dream because it gives a person a goal, it makes them feel good, and it makes them stronger. I know this from The Pearl, A Cubs video, the Susan Boyle video, and We Beat the streets.
Zach Powers is the jock/bully in C Average Middle School. He has been picking on a nerd named Hugh Winkleman. But when he sees hippie Cap, he changes paths with no sympathy about the lost flower child. He says on page 35 “The best part is the doofus has no idea what just happened to him,” In the context he refers to Cap as a doofus because he is a hippie.During this “torture”, Capricorn is just as
Heroes. Everyone wants to be a hero, but sometimes, people lose sight of what a true hero really is. It does not have to be someone who flies around and saves innocent people from perilous monsters. A hero is simply someone that inspires others. In Alexie’s The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, Junior was a hero because he rose above the expectations the world placed on him through his courage, passionate determination, and sympathetic perception.
The play “A Raisin in the Sun” by Lorraine Hansberry has many interesting characters. In my opinion, the most fascinating character is Ruth because of her many emotions and captivating personality. She goes through extreme emotions in the play such as happiness, sadness, anger, stress, and confusion. Ruth is very independent, firm, kind, witty, and loving.
Other students thought that Cap was a hippie, freakazoid, weirdo. For example, Zach Powers said, “Standing beside him was the strangest-looking kid I’d ever seen”. Cap’s first sight of the middle school was when Zach showed him around and Cap was confused on what a locker was and what you put in it. A detail that shows how people feel about Cap is when he does tai chi, and when he got voted president Sophie said, ”It’s like being elected village idiot.”
Gordon Korman’s “Schooled” is based on an eighth grader name Capricorn Anderson. Though as a twist, Cap by far isn’t your average eighth grader, he was raised on a hippie farm commune. Whilst on the farm, he wasn’t educated about everyday items, which left him clueless when his sole caretaker gets injured. After being relocated with a social worker, he was tossed into the troubles of your average middle school student. Even though he’s very calm and adapts well, his new peers seem to not understand him at all.
There is another type of hero that almost no one is aware of. In the poorest areas of the country, live mostly minorities and other ethic background. All their lives they’ve been expected to work harder and expected not succeed in life. Some individuals living in poverty with a determination to succeed work hard all of their lives to become what everybody doubted they could. Escaping the crime, drugs, and prostitution is enough to escape hell, even if they don’t go to college. Despite of their financial problems, drug and crime surroundings, or difficulties in the language skills, their desire to triumph fuels their persistence. Those who make it to success are the few living examples of the purest form of hero anyone can be. They are not only their own heroes but also the heroes of the poor children who dream of becoming like them someday.
Noah is the one of the main characters of The Notebook. He is the hero of this novel. Noah represents true love and true loyalty. In a way, The Notebook is similar to every modern day romance movie, and Noah represents the “dream man” that all the girls always imagine of having. The characters in movies are used to symbolize ideas, and in this novel, Noah represents true, faithful, committed love. Noah remains loyal to Allie even in the situation where he is unsure whether they will ever meet again or not.
Parents are the most important part of a child’s education system. It is a duty for parents to communicate well with their child, and it is always vital for parent to have a deep and sincere conversation with a teenager time to time. In Nothing But The Truth, Philip’s parent should Increase their participation, and spend more time on helping Philip to organize his real thoughts inside his mind and sit down to have a functional conversation instead of gave him blindly trust. On the other hand, they should communicate with school as the character of guardian, and understand what has happened and be objective. One of the reason his parent give him blindly and unconditional support is self-reproach and the willing to make it up to Philip. Philip’s
