While the sun was beaming at 8am, we began to enter one by one marching in like miniature soldiers. I noticed that the room was small, no bigger than a bedroom and there were no faces that I was familiar with. I took a seat and started to soak up my surroundings. The room was very dim. The colors were the least of importance here. There were no windows, which contributed to the lifeless room. I should have known it wasn’t going to be a good day. This prison cell was the least of my worries on my first day of school.
School can be much like prison. We were trapped in there for eight hours with one hour of “freedom”, which is called recess and lunch. I can’t even call it freedom because there are teachers watching you every second. I can’t eat what we want because there is a 100-calorie limit on each food item. I can’t play tag because I might get injured. There are fences all around. Basically I am limited to what the people on top tell us to do. I understand that they do this for safety, but children have to have some freedom. All this sounds bad, but imagine being someone who can’t communicate with other people because they don’t know how to speak English.
I always loved the first day of school. It was my chance to see my classmates again and find out what they did over their summer. When I was in second grade my parents decided to move, which meant I had to go to a new school. I was so excited. I didn’t realize that I had something to be worried about.

I believe that it is necessary for the school system to listen to the children. A child should feel free to express him or her self. No child should be considered different because of what language they speak or who they are. Also all students should be treated equally. If a student is not treated the same as her/his peer then they are more likely to feel like they are not accepted in that environment. Teachers should be understanding and not make children feel like they are less than anybody. School is a place to learn about various subjects but it is also a place where you learn the most about life.

Not everyone can be a brilliant mathematician, physicist, or author. It takes many different people to make the world work cohesively. By maintaining the traditional high school setting while working to fit students’ needs, education can assist in making a greater society.
I had a good year in first grade. I became the best artist in the class. I started getting better at English. My first word was “bathroom.” I made two friends Michelle Sherman and Karen Calle. After that I started feeling better and actually liking this school. Everything felt better and worked out great!
The realm of education tends to shine a negative light on younger generations labeling them as menace to society and ultimately excluding them without fair opportunity. Every child is different; some may require more attention from teachers than others. Schools tend to forget this unique characteristic of human life once standardized testing and grading comes into the equation.
The article titled “Order in the Classroom” goes in depth into the education system; its flaws, strengths, and what needs mending. Author Neil Postman, an educator of New York University includes his perspective on the education system. One remark by contributor William O’Connor, explains that the education in our schools is not inferior, the schools have been getting inferior students (Postman, 309). The students are not inferior in our education system. If we were to look in depth at some of the issues we hold, maybe that mindset would change. What makes us inferior is the fact that we do not teach our children things they need to know before beginning school, we have a horribly structured school day, we believe that socioeconomic status will change a student’s learning and ability and we believe in punishing students who cause disturbances. These are all very low and hurtful perspectives to hold when discussing education.

However, Berkowitz did just that. In a perfect world school is somewhere that is fun, full of students and coworkers that get along with each other, and a place where children feel happy. I understand giving a seating chart to elementary students; however, students who are in high school and even middle school need to learn how to make choices. Teachers need to allow the students to sit where they want and if they are too distracted by friends the student needs to use their own judgment to change seats. This is how children are going to learn how to make choices on their own. The film from class that I most identified with was “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie.” Of all the films we have watched so far, this film and the readings that accompanied it were the most interesting and applicable to my emergence as a new teacher. I was most excited to watch the film because I love Maggie Smith and had never heard of this film. As I began to watch, I became entranced by her performance and by attempting to discover the message the film is attempting to portray. After watching and reading the associated articles, I discovered that the primary point of this film is to express how significantly teachers can influence their students, and that this influence is not always appropriate. Reading the article, “Teachers as Products of Their Schooling: Disrupting Gendered Positions” (Sanford, 2002) I synthesized this theory with literature and developed a specific conclusion. While it may be appropriate in some educational situations for teachers to express their viewpoints to their pupils, it is more important to put aside our own agenda to develop our students’ own viewpoints and opinions.

I can remember sitting in class, feeling eyes burning through me, dodging inquisitive glances from all sides, and anxiously awaiting the bell to ring for lunchtime. As most people know, lunch is the most dreaded part of the first day at a new school. First day of school memories are still fairly vivid for me; my father was in the JAG corps in the Army and my family moved with biannual regularity. In fact, I even attended three different high schools. While this may seem highly undesirable to some, I learned an incredible amount about myself, the world, and other people through movement that I may never have learned otherwise.
Most people don’t see public schools as an issue. Reading through these readings I see that unfortunately our schools are failing some of our students. When reading A Place Called School Goodlad states, “Jencks went so far as to conclude that school reform could do little to reduce the extent of cognitive inequality among students. And he saw differences in schools as irrelevant in explaining differences in attainment among individuals” (pg.5). Clearly it says in the reading how some schools are not prepared to teach students. All schools need to have “equal education for all” which means giving all students the same equal education they deserve no matter what race or color they are. Every single student should have the opportunity to know about all the resources there are available in a public school because there are a lot more than people may think. In relation to equal education having the proper and same attention from the teacher is also part of it not only how they are being treated. School should be a time to make mistakes in a safe environment that they can learn from, not a place that they are petrified to make a mistake for fear of retribution on their grade cards. There are ways to improve school system by police presence, to end overcrowded condition, and to hire more qualified teachers.
