School Uniforms Pros And Cons Essay

School uniforms in public school have long been debated for many years throughout America. Should school policy makers force their students to wear uniforms that were once only required in private schools? That depends on who you speak to. Many who are in favor of uniform policies in a public school believe that it helps promote a positive learning environment in the school, it helps curve school violence due to gangs, and it helps children feel as though they belong. Despite all the positive attributes a school uniform policy may bring to a public school, there are also those who believe that these policies take away from a child’s self-expression which is vital to a child’s development. Those that are opposed to school uniforms also believe that uniforms are a “band-aid” (Kizis, 2000) for all the problems a school may be faced with. Nonetheless, in order to better public schools, fixing the problems they are faced with, should be the goals of administration, teachers, parents, and students alike.

There are many distractions that can affect what children learn and for many, they believe that uniforms can take away many of these distractions. For an example, an inappropriate shirt, such as the one that promotes drugs and alcohol could disrupt an entire class due to a teacher having to stop their lecture to deal with the problem. In fact, in a study conducted on the effects of implementing school uniforms, six elementary teachers from Cincinnati Ohio stated that after their school implemented a uniform policy there were “fewer classroom disruptions” as well as “fewer incidences of quarreling” (Huss,
