A school uniform is a cloth worn by school students, it common in primary and secondary school in various countries, especially in Thailand that has it from Kindergarten to University education. Nowadays, it has been a topic of argument for many schools whether it is the best or the worse to wear. Many say warning uniform gives them a sense of discipline, can conceal the bad side of the school. Yet, is it really seem to be that way? Perhaps, it is not all of it, there is some evidence show that wearing uniform has some disadvantages and this essay will argue that school uniform is not always the best.
One of the main points, why it is not the best clothing to wear, is that it is a waste of time. For many schools, there are many students that
Gordon (2009) claims that force student to wear a uniform, the first thing they will do is try to break the rules which can encourage ill-discipline and it will eventually become their bad behaviour. According to Brunsma and Rockquemore (1998), wearing uniform has a negative impact on student academic achievement. In a result of that, in a case study, they found that student who wears uniforms are absent more often than non-uniform in Catholic school. Furthermore, also they discovered that the number of students who wears the uniform in private school had increased in absenteeism, behaviour and achievement by total 56.60 percent which is the highest among the whole tests. It is clear that uniforms are related to the behaviour, attendance and academic achievement. Hence, serious discipline and academic issue are unlikely to be solved by just wearing the uniform and follow uniform policy, they just cause more issue
Some people argue that wearing uniform help students from being distracted. When students wear the same clothing it much easier to bring the attention back to lesson whereas, for non-uniform students, it is difficult to get their attention form them when it comes to a discussion of who is the most fashionable in the class. However, this view overlooks wearing the uniform would stuffily the students from thinking more creative. If wearing the uniform with just limited colours on it can give students a sense of fashion, that is wrong it just hiding student themselves from the world and their real expression instead. Wearing non-uniform can help them think more creatively by matching their daily clothes. One said, “ Teenagers are trying to express or present themselves and clothing is one of the safest ways for them to do that.” (Lunn
Every year parents, students and teachers argue about the issue of applying school uniform, and if it is going to be put into effect or not. Each year, school dress code is being pushed away. Year after year, to help stop violent behavior and encourage order in schools, dress codes are applied. Does the fact of students having to wear a certain dress code reduce the violent behavior and encourage order in schools? (“The Controversial School Uniforms and School Dress Code Debate”, 2008). Research shows, that dress code policies may increase the chance of a child safety in school by a very low percentage, but that still affects the child in a positive way (“Do uniforms make schools better?”, 2004).
...n will improve on student’s successes. It also helps from building gangster group when they wearing the uniforms because people would notice which school they go when they see them on the street. Over the fashion clothes, students do not need to compare each other for the famous brands. They don’t need to think what to wear every day. However, some of the parents still think it did not have their child individual’s right and support the uniform policy. People do not notice that school uniform is a lot more convenient than having the dress code policy. Even the courts are more support the school uniform than dress code policy. The dress code policy has a lot of rules to obey in contrast the uniform just have to wear what kind clothes schools provide. Wearing the school uniforms, make students stay more disciplined and focus in their studies and feels less pressure.
“The Manual on School Uniforms”, printed and issued by the United States Department of Education, noted that Long Beach, California, reported a decrease in crime, fights, sex offenses, weapons offenses, and vandalism after they adopted their uniform policy (4). Contrary to government findings, The National Educational Longitudinal Study of 1988 discovered that school uniforms have had no real effects on behavior, drug abuse or attendance; furthermore they also came to find that uniforms actually have negative effects on the academic achievement of the students (Brunsma and Rockquemore 54). If school A is emphasizing that school uniforms are conducive to the learning environment, yet school B down the road has higher testing scores but no uniform policy, then their stand is no longer valid. This proves that uniforms have no effect on the learning process.
It has been observed that the adoption of school uniform policies can promote school safety, improve discipline, and enhance the learning environment. The potential benefits of school uniforms include decreasing violence and theft. Some instances involving designer clothing and expensive sneakers have even led to life-threatening situations among students. Uniforms would also prevent gang members from wearing gang colors and insignia at school. Uniforms would also teach students discipline and help them resist peer pressure. Uniforms would also help students concentrate on their schoolwork and would help school officials detect intruders who come unwelcome into the school.
Many parents believe that uniforms will only stifle the students creativity. They will not be allowed to freely express themselves with the colors that they wear as well as the clothing itself. If a child is feeling particularly happy that day, he or she may want to wear their favorite outfit to express themselves and the way that they feel. If all students wear uniforms, the entire school will all look exactly the same, which takes away all creativity and suppresses individuality.
As many parents believe that the protection of students is weakened by wearing uniforms. For example if an emergency or critical situations occurred like earthquakes, tornadoes, fires or terrorist attack this will be hard for them to know their children from the middle of many students because everyone is wearing the same uniform.Although crisis can happen and parents couldn't find their children because everyone is dressed the same but they wouldn't also find them even if they donot wear it .The uniform isn't the problem because you can identify your child from many people no matter what they wear you can always tell the difference between your children and the other students. Some people beli...
When students are not wearing uniforms, students are tending to act the way they are dressed for school. Uniforms are to help students to focus and do better in school and outside of school. School outfits are one of several demands factors that influence learning. It allows students to look more formal on their personality and not how they are dress. Students are allowed determined what is expected at school and the freedom they have outside of school in fashion. It also helps learners to be more discipline in their education and keep them from distractions as clothe design competition to each other. The National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP) and Asia-Pacific Economics Blog (APECSEC) statistics have shown that uniforms impacted in classroom discipline of 85 percent and 44 percent of attendance ( School Uniforms Pros and Cons 5) and (National Assoclation of Elementary School Principle 1-2). When school system is not demand for students to wear uniforms and represent the school, sometime students are not willing to attend classes. Professor Scott
School uniforms lack effectiveness. They don’t help fix any problems. Many believe that school uniforms take away the students distraction towards clothes and appearance and enhance academic performance. However, it does not take a genius to realize that wearing a uniform does not automatically make a student more attentive or hard-working. There may be several other reasons as to why a student lacks focus or is distracted. Those reasons may include problems at home, with other students or even with teachers. Schools should do everything they can to help students with those proble...
A major reason that schools should have uniforms is because students will get along better. They wouldn’t compare each other based on whose wearing what. This is opposed to a school with no uniform some students will feel inferior to the one’s wearing brand name clothes. Also uniforms lower the chances of jealousy between the students. The students would feel more unified with each other. Further more school uniforms can alleviate school violence, because it will help kids with less money escape the teasing they would get if the school had no uniforms. Also uniforms will help differentiate students from gan...
If students have school uniforms, they will spend less time on appearance and more time on learning. School is not the place where people feel like they have to show off how much money they have or what their social status is; school is the place for learning. After various studies, many schools found that when uniforms were enforced, attendance and test scores increased. Also, uniforms promote identity with the school and the classmates, which articulates the common educational goals. This is the reason why teams in sports wear uniforms (Latham). When students have common goals, they will be more likely to help on another.
Because of the uniform the student ho study in schools were are the uniform is mandatory he probably will not study hard because this is the nature of the hymen they do not give all their efforts if the place in which they work in is tedious and do not have any thing to interest them. Also, the student prefer to dress what they like, and some schools do not let them because they think that school is to study not to flaunt wealth. They say that it is for the benefit of the students. Actually, uniforms are iterative because of their dark colors. More often than not, most of the uniforms come in dull colors. It’s always dark blue, khaki, green, black and other tedious colors, and the student will wear it every day in the school. He will feel board because of the tiresome uniform that will affect the student greed because he is board of school, and he will not give all his effort in his study. Actually if people look to the school from above it will look like an army base. If school let the student wear what they like, they will be exited to go to school, and the school will look beautiful and colorful, and of curs the students’ performance will improve because they will study with high
Students are distracted by the variety of clothing they choose to wear it takes away from them gaining inner knowledge. Students choose to wear fancy, strange, or bright colorful clothes. Students become more interested in paying attention to what other students are wearing and what they have instead of focusing on the subject they are being taught in class. Students should be focusing on gaining new knowledge and skills. Wearing uniforms would teach students how to focus on their personalities, inner beauty, rather than their
Some regard that school uniforms influence the way students analyze problems, understand work, and dedicate themselves to situations. However, a simple alteration in clothing does not determine or change the frame of mind, but rather it is the character of that individual that helps to produce the
Have you ever considered why students should wear a school uniform? For a long time, scholars have debated worldwide, whether students should wear a school uniform or not. After a lot of research, I can evidently see that people still have diverse opinions about this subject as some people think school uniform is essential, some are just fine with its existence, and some think it is useless.
With uniforms, it may restrict the desire for students to dress themselves to impress or stand out. Wearing something they are comfortable with and what they love may increase their confidence level and not curb their creativity. Sometimes when students had to obey the rules and regulations, they might feel locked up inside as they cannot really express themselves. This case can lead to several discipline cases as a student can act aggressively since they think the need to wear uniforms will cut off their
