Should School Resource Officers in Schools be a Safety Concern?
The evolution of policing in the United States closely followed the growth of policing in England. In the early colonies, policing took two forms. It was both informal and communal which was referred to as the “watch” or private for profit policing, which is called “The Big Stick” (Spitzer, 1979). The watch system was composed of community volunteers whose primary duty was to warn of impending dangers. They were the night watch in Boston, New York, and Philadelphia between 1636 and 1844. These informal modalities policing continue well after the American Revolution.
Public support for school safety have been more prevalent after shoots, fights, bomb threats, and drugs in schools.

Civil right groups have long complained that students will be severely punished for minor behavior problems. School resource officers should not be in schools because of their overly aggressive physical technique that would be used on students. They should not be involved in school discipline matters. Other leaders fear that school resource officers often arrest and criminalize children as young as a 5 years old who do not understand the charges or the ramifications. There are top stories every day of the American people and police officers who clash in school and in neighborhood. The trust have gone in the schools. The relationship is not the same. Students feel scared rather than safe. According to the article “Do the Police belong in Public Schools” it stated “It is an atmosphere of dislike and distrust for one of the finest police forces of the world.” The media does not let a week go by without reporting some negative behavior or issues about our police …show more content…
The National Center of Educational Statistics are supplying over 43,000 school resource officers and an additional 39,000 security guards working in the nation’s 84,000 public schools. School officials want all children and faculty to be safe while in school. The school resource officer was hired in post-Columbine age which many communities want to do everything possible to guard against threats from drugs, gangs, and weapons. The mass shooting like the elementary school massacre in Newtown, Connecticut three years ago increased the need of
The English Police experience influenced American policing through their practice of keeping city streets clean as well as establishing the good order and discipline of its residents. One the main ways they were able to accomplish this was through deterrence which is still used to this day. The mere presence of a police officer or officers would deter residents from getting out of line and prevent them from doing "unseemly behavior" in public places. The establishment of the police meant an active group patrolling the streets on the lookout for breaches of the moral code as well as common-law crimes, thus extending the authority of the state into the daily lives of the
Policing is a very difficult, complex and dynamic field of endeavor that is always evolves as hard lessons teach us what we need to know about what works and what don’t work. There are three different Era’s in America’s policing: The Political Era, The Reform Era, and The Community Problem Solving Era. A lot has changed in the way that policing works over the years in the United States.
According to Kelling, Pate, Dieckman, & Brown (1974), patrol is the “backbone” of police work. This belief is based around the premise that the mere presence of police officers on patrol prohibits criminal activity. Despite increasing budgets and the availability of more officers on the streets, crime rates still rose with the expanding metropolitan populations (Kelling et al., 1974). A one year experiment to determine the effectiveness of routine preventive patrol would be conducted, beginning on the first day of October 1972, and ending on the last day of September 1973.
The modern police agencies have grown and developed since the early 1600s to become an increasingly organized group that endeavors to prevent crime while preserving the rights and professionalism of citizens. Generally, modern policing in the United has been shaped by the early English police styles (“The History of the Police”, n.d.). This is primarily because the first organized policing agencies were witnessed in the early 1800s but exper...
We are sourcing our 12 oz. aluminum cans from Southern Virginia from one the largest aluminum product providers in the region, Ball Corporation. Since this is a domestic transaction we will not be using Incoterms but we still will negotiate a contract with the supplier. Ball Corporation has many corporate accounts that buy in much large quantities than we are currently capable so we are facing a higher unit price. Industry averages for companies our size indicate Patriot Brewery will pay $0.06 to $0.07 a can. Ball Corporation has an extensive distribution network and those cans, which are hard to ship because of their volume and weight, will be delivered to our manufacturing plant within one business day. Because of their superior logistics capabilities, we are using the Uniform Commercial Code FOB Destination, Freight Collected. We decided upon freight collected because of the difficulty and risk of damage associated with shipping aluminum cans.
Throughout the years of education, kids go to school to get an education, to hang with friends, to get excise, and many other things. America should have armed officers in in public schools. Since kids are spending a majority of their time throughout the day and year at school, they should feel safe in that environment. That can soon change with school security falling behind with this current growth of school shooting. Schools shootings have begun occurring more often in the United States from elementary schools all the way up to colleges. How should school systems fix this problem? One solution that could be the most effective is having multiple armed officers in schools. Let’s begin with some major school shootings that were lacking armed officers, when the resource officer successfully stopped a potential shooting, and reasons why we should have an armed officer.

Since 1980 till now, there have been many school shootings. Many innocent lives have been taken. Schools have become less safe. People blame either bad parenting or video games. Bullying is another factor as to why students end up shooting at schools and then ending their own life. It is so tragic and must be stopped.
Policing became popular during the 1700s to 1800s. The first ever police force to establish was created by Sir Robert Peel, and it was to enforce laws and to bring justice to the people in society. Over the years,
Although most security measures passively make schools safer, it is not nearly enough to prevent an individual who intends on creating mass violence from completing his or her task. State representatives, national organizations, school staff, and parents need to come together to figure out the most reliable ways to prevent an active shooter situation from occurring in their schools. One solution that has been active is many schools have partnered with local law enforcement agencies to provide a police officers to patrol school grounds....
The origins of law enforcement can be traced back to English roots. The first incorporated stages of policing involved kin policing which “involved families, clans, and tribes enforcing informal rules and customs,” in the community in order to keep the peace. Law enforcement refers to any system by which some members of society act in an organized manner to enforce the law by “preventing, detecting, and investigating.”(Worrall & Schmalleger, 2013, p. 2) People who violated the rules and normal behaviors of the governing system, would be prosecuted in a court of law. The evolution of policing developed into watches, constables, and sheriffs, who took care of their communities. This method of policing eventually changed, when the Greek and Roman Empire took over.

American law enforcement agencies are based off the English models which began in the early 1800’s. In 1829, the English Parliament passed the Metropolitan Police Act (Walker, 1983). Sir Robert Peel who has been credited as the father of modern policing introduced this act to Parliament (Walker, 1983). This act established the London Metropolitan Police which was the model for American policing. This method of policing incorpor...
I. I have been assigned to answer the question of what does Walker say about Wilson, Kelling, and Moore’s call for a return to the days of Watchman style of policing, and to describe the old style of policing according to Walker. II. According to Walker, the old style of policing was inefficient, highly corrupt, unprofessional, and ineffective. Walker asserts that Wilson, Kelling, and More have a highly romanticized idea of what the old style of policing was like, and points out several flaws in their statements.
"The basic weapon that the citizens of the early modern era learned to use to defend their security and combat danger was their own intense sociability – a complex of human relations and institutions predicated on collective, local, informal and voluntaristic reactions to disorder and law breaking … As a concept, policing was a community duty" (McMullan, 1998, p.95 cited in Baker, 2008). These sentiments show that policing is a concept that has always existed only that over the years it has been modified to suit the changing times and respond to the needs and demands at a particular point in time. Policing is a term that has attracted various definitions from different scholars. In defining policing, Hills contends that "the focus should
