Financial support for students comes from local, state, and federal agencies. Several examples Lu shared was that quarterly the nursing hours she expends attending to special needs children are reviewed and they receive state reimbursement from Medicaid. Also, due to the number of low income students at the school, they receive money from being part of the federal food program.
Health Care Policies and Referrals
There are many services available to students through referrals that Lu mentioned. Medicaid will provide occupational or physical therapy at reduced cost or free depending on ability to pay. They will also cover vaccinations and early periodic screening for those students who qualify (Lowe, Cagginello, & Compton, 2015).

7. Provides direct care to students (Guinn-Jones, 2008, p. 1053). In observing Lu, in her current position as a school nurse, she fulfills all of these roles and so many more. As is true with any nursing position, there are many facets uncovered when exploring school nursing. The job requires problem solving skills, interpersonal skills, and the ability to develop and maintain positive relationships with multiple people. There seems to be quite a bit of autonomy, yet the need to practice under the Nebraska Nurse’s Association bylaws along with state and federal regulations is critical. One example of improving student safety involves student’s progression back into sports or activities post-concussion. Bellevue follows the concussion and management protocol that was put into effect in 2012 (The Nebraska Department of Education [NDE], 2014). Her involvement in spreading the word to lay people and staff involved seminars at the high school and elementary level, as well as holding before school conferences explaining it for parents or anyone who had questions. She also assisted the district in the development of computer programs for the ongoing training of
The role of nurse practitioner in the Canadian healthcare system is relatively new compared to the traditional roles of doctors and registered nurses, and as with any new role, there are people who oppose the changes and others who appreciate them. Some members of the public and the healthcare system believe that the addition of the nurse practitioner (NP) role is an unnecessary change and liability to the system because it blurs the line between a doctor and a nurse; this is because nurse practitioners are registered nurses with additional training (usually a masters degree) that allows them to expand their scope of practice into some areas which can be treated by doctors. Other people feel that nurse practitioners can help provide additional primary care services, while bridging communication between nurses and doctors. There are always legitimate challenges to be overcome when changing a system as complicated as healthcare,

That’s where the advancements in concussion detection and treatment comes into play. According to the article “Advancements in Concussion Prevention, Diagnosis, and Treatment” the writer states “the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported 207,830 trips to an emergency room annually between 2001 and 2005 due to sports participation injuries” ( “Advancements in Concussion Prevention, Diagnosis, and Treatment | The Sport Journal” ). The report from the CDC shows how many reported sports injuries occur in a short period. However, this does not include the vast number of injuries not reported every year. That is a lot of injuries that go unreported and not cared for. We can help make it to where all kids after a concussion report it and get treated by educating them on the dangers they face if they continue to play as they are and tell them they will be right back to playing after the testing has been completed and they are clear to play again. This is not hard to do it’s just the fact of telling the kids the truth of the matter and them knowing the tests aren’t hard and don’t take long to pass. But the kids need to know this is needed if they want to be able to play for years to come in school and even in
There is a common misconception that the role of school nurses only includes the occasional first aid duties and caring for kids with a cold or the flu. Yet, the truth is that the responsibilities of school nurses are critical to monitoring and maintaining healthy and thriving schools. School Nurses are foundational to making public education available to every student regardless of any and all pre-existing health conditions and circumstances.
Through sports or through everyday life, concussions tend to happen. An estimated 300 000 sport-related traumatic brain injuries, predominantly concussions, occur annually in the United States. Sports are second only to motor vehicle crashes as the leading cause of traumatic brain injury among people aged 15 to 24 years. (U.S National Library of Medicine). Coaches and parents often do not go through the right procedures or protocols when dealing with a teenager who has received a blow to the head. The usual questions that are asked when there is a head injury are, “what day is it, what’s the score, and how many fingers am I holding up?” Now these are not poor questions, but these questions alone cannot determine if a person has suffered a concussion. The correct method, which they are now implementing in most professional sports leagues, is for anyone with a head injury to take a legitimate concussion test performed by the team doctor. (WebbMD) At present the symptoms can be hit or miss. After receiving a concussion, research shows that an “estimated 80 to 90% of concussions heal spontaneously in the first 7 to 10 days”. (Barton Straus) But, it is important to remember not to return until all symptoms are

An anonymous person once said, "He who has health has hope; and he who has hope has everything." Ever since I was a young girl, I always knew I wanted to do something with helping people. But as I grew up, I also took an interest in sports, which leads me to where I am today. I would like to be able to help people in the sports ' world. In this essay, I plan to research concussions and how the long-term effects can impact people for the rest of their lives. Through research, I have learned exactly what a concussion is, the long-term effects and severity, and finally the treatments for a concussion. This relates to my senior project because for my final product, I will be presenting the lasting effects of concussions.

There are certain aspects and competencies common to role of the nurse practitioner (NP), nurse educator (NE), nurse informatics (NI), and nurse administrator (NA). All four roles act as leaders within the health care organizations depending on their designated areas of duty. Their input is needed to keep the health care institution running. To assume their roles, NP, NE, NI, and NA require some education and credential from nursing perspective or other related experiences.
The state does not pay your entire bill. They subsidize your cost. In general, the assistance is for those that meet low income guidelines and who need help while they are attending job training programs, school or working. Having the availability of these programs helps student parents make better decisions. For example: over 80 percent of students attending Community college said that the availability of on-campus child care was very important in the decision to attend a college. 46 percent of students said that on-campus child care was their first priority when enrolling. 60 percent of students said that they could not have continued college without on-campus child care and 95 percent said that child care allowed them to increase their class load. Federal and state grants for child care for low-income parent’s average $4,600 per
From the year 2001 to 1005 children aged 5-18 accounted for 2.4 million emergency room visits due to sports related injuries. Of these visits around 6 percent involved a concussion(The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). Every athlete that receives a concussion does not necessarily go to the emergency room. Athletic trainers, when available and certified, can oversee the recovery of an athlete without a trip to the emergency room. Some concussions go untreated altogether. While the percentage may seem low, looki...
