The Changes in School Food and Ingredients: Trying to Help Obesity in Children School lunches have been the target for helping reduce obesity in children and adolescent in schools. Since the speech of Mrs. Obama in 2010, school food had been modifying. More healthy ingredients are incorporated in their schools food and other ingredients are been eliminated from the menus. Due to budget cuts and Obama’s speech school lunches has been impacted, the way they prepare them and the ingredients they are using. Before 2010, students from day cares to high schools had been the once having the meal changes in their schools. Bending machines in schools are been removed, children are not able to buy any junk food

Obama’s Move program, schools made the change to healthy foods right away. From one school year to other students were offered new healthy food. The most shocking in young students was the complete change. Children are use to eat in a certain way, they preferred tasty foods and even though healthy can also be tasty the school cafeteria’s food did not reach the good taste in their meals. Before all food changes occurred, students seem to like school lunches more; it was a lot less food waste. The majority of students enjoyed food like spaghetti and meatballs, Mac and cheese, they loved pizza every Friday. School kids liked chocolate milk and very few students drank white milk, now chocolate milk is no longer present in their lunch tray. Before, fewer students used to bring lunch from home, and at least in elementary school junk food were not seen as it seen now. The waist of food is considerable students do not like the majority of the food is given and they just throw it away or give it to another students that like that particular meal. Some of the students would eat double portions of food obtained by other pupils. If the school food would change the tasted or if the changes would been little by little, students would be able to accept new healthy food with no problem. There are different ways of making healthy food tasty, using condiments that are not harm to their health or cooking foods but it give a good taste. Because cafeterias do not have enough workers they had to reduce the amount of cooking in the school kitchen. Most of the times they order food from the district that it is precook and package, they only have to warmer up and serve. Another significant change regarding school food is breakfast in classrooms. The cafeteria manager told me that it was a law they pass where they saw the importance of the first meal of the day, and they implemented that too, as another change of Obama’s program. The district order breakfast for students and stuff from a different funding, not from school’s budget. Some teachers explain a student how important is to eat breakfast for their bodies and their health. Teachers share that time eating with students and the students like that. Some teacher do not allowed students to eat junk food during breakfast time and kids respect that, even though they eat some junk food at lunch time at least during breakfast they eat better. Last, the cafeteria manager assistant, added “we need to push students to at least taste the food that they think they don’t like, a lot of the students they see the food and right away they said “I do not like that” but they haven’t event tasted it.” She also told me that our test buds on our thong change all the time, that if a student does not like particular food at that moment may be in two or three
Having different food can affect a child health. There are milky ways, cake, cookies, pizza and lets just add some French fries in there and call that lunch. Don’t forget the drink sweet tea, pop and milk that one doesn’t choose to drink it. The students would go back to the class rooms after twenty minutes and be hungry at the end of the da. There has been so much junk food and soft drinks in schools that makes the student health unsafe and a distraction to their education. For example, students could brainstorm very fast as Albert Einstein, and gain more energy to work out on their gym classes. Furthermore, school have to create agriculture class for students to have strong knowledges in foods. Students can literally be ware of what they eat at their lunch times; they will know vegetables grow in the ground and how foods are really fresh. One reason our school should get a new lunch menu is many students do not like the food served. For example, a survey was taken and of the 31 students 100% said they disliked the food. As student Bryan Huang said, “The lunches are horrible, they need better choices and more choices.” In other words, the food is not delicious and there are not many choices. The new standards given to school districts to follow and oblige to have swiftly changed after the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act was passed making it healthier for students to eat both breakfast and lunch. This article mentioned certain limitations that many schools had to officially make on what they had to serve their students as well as the costs of these changes. Certain limitations included certain amount of fruits and vegetables, fat-free milk, replacement of whole grains, and they had to set limits on the amount of calories and sodium in their foods.

Some say that students already have enough choices of what to eat at lunch. If schools get more lunch choices then that means more money. They might make the same amount of food, but the more variety the more expensive it will get. With more food choices that means that the food will take longer to be prepared. In turn you will need more cooks doing different tasks trying to get the food prepared on time.
Why is this a problem? Cafeteria food is often cheap, bought in bulk, high in calories, malnutritious, and microwaved. Student polls and opinions prove this. Therefore, this leads to a suggestion: Healthier, tastier foods and a better, more advanced lunch system should be implemented. First of all, students aren’t motivated to eat unhealthy, not-tasty food.
There was a 37% waste for milk. 30% of fruits and 72% of vegetable plates were wasted by the children participating in the National School Lunch Program. Before and after the changes in the program, the vegetable plate waste was more than 50%, so clearly the changes did not help this too much.21 Majority of the children do not eat the recommended amount on a daily basis which makes packed lunches even less nutrient dense than the National School Lunch Program. Therefore, the National School Lunch Program consumes more fruits and vegetables, even though that still is not enough. It is hard to find cheap vegetables that children are going to actually like enough to eat.
The creamy chocolate taste of a delectable warm brownie and the salty crunch of potato chips are often irresistible, especially for kids. Even though the sale of healthier lunches in schools can be more difficult to afford, schools should stop the sale of junk food. Obesity rates among children have tripled since the 1970s, low-income students aren’t getting the needed nutrition, and we’re causing bad eating habits due to unhealthy school lunches. As a result of healthier lunches, we can significantly reduce obesity rates in school, making our students healthier, so spending a bit more money is worth it. America, land of the free, home of the brave and obese children.
