School lunches have been in insufficiency in its system of providing the quality food to students to even wanting to consume school food. Everyday school offer a lack of proper meal that student will not ever talk about having good memories about food. The food doesn't have a very good taste of a meal, and it tasted like leftover food that has been reheated from a microwave. School food doesn't provide fresh food to the students that eat it. The district that control food is wasting their money on food is being thrown away of losing money. Food quality has been lacking over the taste of freshness flavors that make students wanting to ditch our school to get better food from a market or restaurant place. For an example like this: the food tastes like from leftovers and been reheated from a microwave. It means that the school needs quality of food. School food in “the program cost around $9 billion” (Waters & Heron) wasted on no quality food that students on their own will are going to eat it. From that $9 billion only cover low-quality food to provide to school. The students are willing to starve from breakfast and lunch until school time is over to eat at home than eating at school which they don’t provide a homemade food in school. This is an effect on students that want to learn but can’t because of all they can do is think about going to eat out or go home and eat when school is done. This makes “Parent advocacy groups likes Better School Food have rejected the National School Lunch Programs and have turned instead to local farmers for fresh alternatives” (Waters & Heron) for a better option to find the better quality of food. The obesity rate need to stop, and it have to start off the bombardment of advertising the fat and junk food that we don’t need. As for health concern that many people that eat up tons of carbohydrate that makes young people and adults having a Type 2 Diabetes. “Children’s physical well-being not to the continued spread of youth obesity,” (Brody) which the U.S. need to invest their time to keep people having Type 2 Diabetes in their young age.As this can also translate to school. In school need to rely on local grown food instead of “unprocessed foods that are produced without pesticides or chemical fertilizers,” (Brody) of food coming from a factory. Overall, this book was a very eye-opening read that I would suggest to everyone especially those that want to see school lunches evolve into something awesome not only for children but also for agriculture. After reading this book, I am ready to get out there and try to pursue change in the school lunch system so that my children’s generation can go to school knowing that they will be fed right, responsibly, and without fear of being stigmatized.
The Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act has taken over schools nationwide and needs to be stopped. There are more negatives than positives that go along with this act and there needs to be an end. Schools should not have to waste money on expensive food to have it not be eaten. Students should be able to enjoy what the lunchroom has to offer. The students do not buy these lunches so the food goes to waste. In 2012, when the Healthy Hunger Free-Kids Act was made students stopped eating their school lunches and schools began to lose great amounts money. It 's beneficial to encourage healthy eating habits with schools but this act needs to be reformed.

Obesity has become an epidemic in adults and children in the United States. Moreover, children are at risk of obesity because they do not eat enough fruits and vegetables and do not obtain enough physical activity. Also, children have a higher chance of developing health diseases related to obesity such as hypertension, high cholesterol, stroke, heart disease, diabetes and pulmonary disease. In addition, obesity in children from ages one to seventeen is an issue in Texas, since children are not aware of the serious consequences of being obese. Therefore, Texas should find ways to prevent obesity by authorizing healthier school lunches and allowing a school program to help obese children lose weight. Also, television advertisements are influencing obese children to make unhealthy choices.

We all remember that day when President Obama took office, and our school lunches changed forever. First Lady Michelle Obama, felt that too many American kids are overweight, so she thought she needed to make our school lunches healthier, with more fruits and vegetables. One of the major changes she made was how many calories the school cooks were able to give the kids. The new requirements are as follows: up to 650 for children in kindergarten through fifth grade, 700 for sixth through eighth graders and 850 for high scholars. These numbers are consistent with the Mayo Clinic’s recommendations ( Kuczynski-Brown). The main goal of cutting calories and taking away junk food, was to insure that kids are getting served a healthy lunch. At each lunch, schools must still provide a cup of fruit, a cup of vegetables, two servings of grains, two ounces of dairy, and a cup of fluid milk, so that students can get their needed vitamins and nutrients (Anonymous) . They are also wanting more local farmers to be involved, and give more of the food they grow to the school. At the high school I went to, we built a green house, and planted a garden to give us some local grown food. It was part of our Ag Science class. As student Bryan Huang said, “The lunches are horrible, they need better choices and more choices.” In other words, the food is not delicious and there are not many choices. Many parents of the students at these schools were outraged to find out that their healthy, homemade lunches were being replaced by the schools gluten-filled meals. According to James Joyner of Outside The Beltway a preschooler had gotten her bagged lunch taken away because an official at her school labeled it as “unhealthy”. The young girls lunch consisted of a turkey & cheese sandwich, a banana, chips, and an apple juice pouch. Her lunch was said to not have “met the USDA guidelines”. USDA guidelines state that lunches (whether they’re brought from home or supplied by the school) must include one serving of the following: grain, milk(dairy), meat(protein), and either a fruit or vegetable. Also, if the child is missing one of the food items a childcare provider is supposed to equip them with that missing item. Instead of providing her with the missing food item, the bagged lunch official took her whole lunchbox, and made the girl eat the school lunch (which was chicken nuggets). With the implementation of the “Healthy Kids Hunger-Free Act” schools are not serving as many lunches and participation is decreasing. According to the Government Accountability Office (GOA), “Nationwide, student participation declined by 1.2 million students(or 3.7 percent) from school year 2010-2011 through school year 2012-2013, after having increased steadily for many years”(sec. 1). The students of our school should rally together and hang the cooks in the cafeteria. Well, maybe that is a little too dramatic, but something has to be done about the school lunch. The staff that they serve the students is truly awful. Students should not be forced to eat in the cafeteria because the meals are not prepared well, there are foreign objects in the deserts, and many kids have gotten ill after eating certain items.
