There was a time when school lunch to be amazing and they would give students things like cookies and cupcakes. We even got ice cream sometimes, but now all of that has changed. Over the years, school lunch has gotten healthier and since then, students haven’t been buying lunch as much. From what my surroundings majority of the students don’t eat school lunch, so by making school lunch healthier, they won’t buy lunch as much. The school cafeteria shouldn’t change the lunch menu because more students won’t eat it since it’ll be “tasteless”, they won’t want to try it, and if students don’t eat healthy at home they won’t eat healthy at school
When the lunch gets healthier, they take away the unhealthy stuff we like and that makes it taste bland. The lunch ladies remove sugar, salt, fat, etc. They don’t remove all of it, but they remove most of it so our food can be healthier and filled with fatty oils and such. Majority of us like to eat chips anyway. That’s what we’ll eat and snack on for the entire day and then when we get home, we’ll eat actual food. If all we eat at home is junk food like chips and sweets, then that’s what we’ll eat at school. Some teens eat healthy and correctly, but it’s kind of rare that you’ll find a student who eats fruits, vegetables, etc. When we were younger, we were told we had to eat fruits and vegetables, but now that we’re older, we aren’t getting told what we can and can’t eat anymore. Nowadays, we eat fat and greasy foods and once we’re used to that, that’s all we’re going to want to eat. However, even though myself and other students may not agree with a healthier change in the lunch menu some parents and faculty members think it’s a significant
idea. It’s proven that healthier food improves our academic performance. Teachers, administrators, staff, and our parents/guardians are all about us maintaining good grades and by eating healthier food that helps us keep up that good work. It helps us stay focused and alert, instead of us being tired, crabby, and unfocused all the time from us eating too much junk. Many of us argue that banning junk food is a bad idea. We say junk food tastes better than healthy food but that doesn’t mean healthy food can’t taste just as good if not better. In conclusion, majority of the students don’t eat school lunch anyway, so by making school lunch healthier, there will be a decrease in school lunch being bought. Even though we might not eat the school lunch and we eat chips, at least we’re eating something. By changing the school lunch, we’ll only buy more chips. The school cafeteria shouldn’t change the lunch menu because more students won’t eat the lunch, the lunch will be tasteless, and if students don’t eat healthy at home they won’t eat healthy at school.
Janet Poppendieck is a professor of sociology at Hunter College in New York, and additionally she is the author of several books including her most recent Free for All: Fixing School Food in America. This book centers on America’s recent interest in whether or not our school lunches are healthy. This issue has been put into the spotlight recently through shows such as Jamie Oliver’s School Food Revolution and in the news because recent changes in the Nation School Lunch Program’s dietary guidelines. Poppendieck’s book looks at the in depth reasons into why school lunches have turned into what they are today, what challenges need to be faced in order to fix school lunches, and ultimately how our the system should be fixed. She accomplishes this by interviewing her current college students about their previous school lunch experiences, working in a school cafeteria, interviewing current school employees, and looking at the history and policies of the National School Lunch Program.
Having different food can affect a child health. There are milky ways, cake, cookies, pizza and lets just add some French fries in there and call that lunch. Don’t forget the drink sweet tea, pop and milk that one doesn’t choose to drink it. The students would go back to the class rooms after twenty minutes and be hungry at the end of the da. Garland said, “Instead, we allow school cafeterias to dispense the same junk food that kids could buy in any mall” (621). There has been so much junk food and soft drinks in schools that makes the student health unsafe and a distraction to their education. With that being said when I was in high school it was nothing but junk food for three years. When Michele Obama changed the law on the school lunches my senior lunches have changed. It was nothing but healthy food like whole grain, no sweets, two scoops of fruits and vegetables. At Odessa they had a school store loaded with junk food that would be sold out by forth period. If schools were to encourage healthy eating by serving a more variety of foods students would learn to like healthy eating. In the study done by Julianna Cecere she asked students through the social media app Twitter to tweet her their opinions on their school lunches and most of them were not in favor of them. Schools are meant to give our children a healthy and nurturing environment, and yet so much of the lunches in schools are fattening; does this stop schools from achieving the aforementioned goal? This doesn’t help kids focus in the classroom for hours after consuming these fatty and sugary foods. The kids will get a sugar high but then crash hours after and won’t be focusing in class but instead, falling asleep during an important lesson. One reason our school should get a new lunch menu is many students do not like the food served. For example, a survey was taken and of the 31 students 100% said they disliked the food. We cannot have a school lunch reform where the needs of all students are not met. If only some, or less than the majority, of students are receiving the nutritional values they need, we need to adapt the reform to further achieve better standards for school lunch programs. For example, after a student finishes their meal, schools could offer a second serving of protein to their students. In effect, this will add a higher amount of calories to the students’ daily diets.

Parents get mad at the school because their children are getting obsessed by eating all the grease and fat of the food.
Have you ever tasted school cafeteria food? I don’t think you would want to. In school story books, do you have characters saying that the food tasted good at school cafeterias? Nope. Why is this? Cafeteria food is often cheap, bought in bulk, high in calories, malnutritious, and microwaved. Student polls and opinions prove this. Therefore, this leads to a suggestion: Healthier, tastier foods and a better, advanced lunch system should be implemented.
