Recommended: School uniforms effect on grades

At the beginning of each school year students and parents receive the student handbook which includes the school’s dress code. Most students hate the dress code because it prohibits them from wearing certain things to school. Schools feel the need to have and enforce the dress code because they want students to be in a safe learning environment while avoiding distractions. However, it seems that girls are usually the ones getting dress coded for what they wear while boys seem to get away with more. Just about anything a girl wears can be considered distracting or inappropriate by the school when it should not. Girls have to wear shorts that are a certain length and shirts that do not show too much cleavage. It seems that if a girl gets harassed by a guy it will be her fault which is not true. Whatever a girl wears does not give a guy permission to disrespect her in any way but schools do not seem to understand this or just do not want to deal with it. In an article to Times magazine Laura Bates, founder of Everyday Sexism Project, writes “The problem is often compounded by a lack of any attempt to discipline boys for harassing behavior, which drives home the message that it is the victim’s responsibility to prevent.” Schools need to stop acting like the girls are the only ones to blame and start changing their policies in order to teach the boys that their actions are not …show more content…

When it gets hot girls want to wear things like shorts and tank tops but get in trouble because their clothing do not meet the school’s guidelines. The schools should understand that when it gets hot girls want to wear clothing that will help them stay cool. Instead school staff and teachers check to see if shorts are the appropriate length by making sure they are at least to the girls’ fingertips. However, this is not fair because there are girls who have long arms that reach almost to their knees. Also girls cannot wear tank tops or any type of shirt that shows their bra straps since it could make the male students and teachers feel uncomfortable.
