The purpose of the modern educational system is to produce educated, productive, and informed citizens of society. Since students are expected to do more with technology and higher level thinking, distractions in and around the classroom should be kept to a minimum. Most types of educational sites, kindergarten to twelfth grade, have some type of dress standard ranging from school-issued dress code compliance to only enforcing the most vulgar or indecent apparel. Dress codes within educational institutions are considered a hindrance by some and a help by others. The neutral ground may encompass a school dress policy with some freedom in accessories and dress up days.

to wear uniforms during the 2011-2012 school year, up from one in eight in 2003-2004.” Standardized dress codes are said to promote personality over attire and “make schools safer for students” by creating “a ‘level playing field’ that reduces socioeconomic disparities, and encourage children to focus on their studies rather than their clothes” (ProCon.org). Bullying is also a key factor in the increase of schools requiring dress codes since some students, who do not have the income to do so, feel obligated to wear the latest fashion trends to fit in at school. “In fact, surveyed school leaders with a school uniform or formal dress code policy in place believe their current policy has made a significant, positive impact on peer pressure (86 percent) and bullying (64 percent)” (Tucker). On the other hand, there is an argument that dress codes restrict the student’s freedom of expression and promote conformity over individuality (ProCon.org).
ProCon.org also reasons that, “Clothing choices are ‘a crucial form of self-expression,’ according to the American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada, which also stated that ‘allowing students to choose their clothing is an empowering message from the schools that a student is a maturing person who is entitled to the most basic self-determination.’” In other words, clothes are one of the only resources students are free to choose at school unlike the bell schedule and most …show more content…

in. In order to complete this action plan, support will be needed from students and parents alike. A draft of the policy should be made with the principal regarding the benefits and details of the plan and the school board would need to approve it. Considering many schools are beginning to require school uniforms, it would be in the student’s best interests to participate in the drafting of this proposition in order to have their voices heard. In this competitive, technologically-driven globally-influenced world, students cannot afford to be distracted with anything other than the pursuit of their education. However, having fun along the way can create a positive understanding to ensure an uplifting and memorable educational experience.

America’s school systems seem to have many issues concerning students receiving a quality education without distraction. A current debate argues weather a dress code policy is efficient or takes away from student’s expression. Nowadays, though, this is a giant concern among students, parents, and school board officials. Many arguments have been made over the matter saying uniforms should be required and enforced in schools.
