Programme-Related Assignment: School Counselor The person that I interviewed is a high school counselor that wanted to remain anonymous for personal reasons due to their answers to the interview questions. The basic information about this high school counselor is that this is female and she has been a counselor for many years now. I will refer to her as Madame A. She has been inspired to become a school counselor during the beginning years of university. She was inspired by her surrounding in high school where many students encountered many problems at school due to their personal daily lives. She hoped one day she could help students improve in school and not let personal problems hinder their success at school. She stated that there were a lot more to it, but only wanted to name a few. She also said that it is important to keep everything confidential between her and the students because that is how trusts are built. To her, being a school counselor is not only a career, but a person that is building relationships with her students in order to have better understanding on how to help them go through their problems together. Conversely, she will always remain professional; however, it saddens her that occasionally she has to keep her own opinions to herself because it can violate the code of ethics. She stated that in the beginning of her career it was harder; however, now it has become a habit of her to remain professional yet open-minded at the same time. She told me that, “it will be easier to handle some situations with experience; however, it doesn’t mean that it will always turn out the way you want it to
Her motto for working with students is “kids are my business”. She made sure to imply that her business and work within the school is planned around the students. Mrs. Harmon described her daily work as a counselor as unpredictable. She expressed that every day she usually spends time responding to emails and phone calls, and making calls out to universities and community organizations. She stated that she focuses more within the academic part of counseling and, depending on the level of severity, she may refer a student to the school social worker for social emotional counseling. She stated that 70% of her time is spent evaluating the academic, personal, social, and career of the students, while the other 30% is used to focus on the students social emotional matters. While speaking with her, I noticed that many students were in and out of her office for various reasons; some of the reasons included students looking for bus cards, scholarships, candy, clarity on course requirements, and informing her of the issues between the students enrolled at King. I noticed students referring to Mrs. Harmon as their mom at school. She had an open door policy and was available to every student that needed her, even as I interviewed her. Strother expressed that as a counselor, he is “constantly advocating” for his job. This is most likely due to the difference of perspectives when it comes to defining the role of the school counselor. Mr. Strother makes this clear when he states “our role within the school is usually determined by how the administrator view our position. I cannot recall a more rewarding experience than helping facilitate a child’s education while enabling parent participation alike. These experiences have drawn me to my current position as an Educational Assistant where I am constantly interacting and establishing relationships with students, learning about their goals and aspirations. It is that same desire to empower our future students that has steered me towards a career as a school counselor. By enrolling in the Masters in counseling program, I aspire to develop methods and experience to become an effective, experienced, and adaptable school counselor that promotes self-awareness, allowing students to realize their full potential and impetus them towards a promising future. I want to learn skills that facilitate personal and career development, ensuring that our students grow accomplishing their goals and ambitions.
During the past three years of college, my interest in counseling has been affirmed through a variety of experiences. One important experience that influenced my decision to pursue a career as a school counselor was my involvement in my community service sorority, Chi Delta Alpha. Through Chi Delta Alpha, I volunteered on several occasions, among them I babysat children to provide parents with a night off; I was responsible for a group of elementary students as they experienced college classes and I painted a caboose for a local playground. A theme that has remained constant throughout all my different experiences is that making a difference in a person’s life is a rewarding experience, and I know that I desire a career that enables me to support high school students as they face difficult situations.
School counseling has evolved over the years into a significant component of the educational system. School counselors are taking on new roles in schools as leaders, working with “school administration and staff in developing student attitudes and behavior which are necessary to maintain proper control, acceptable standards of self-discipline and a suitable learning environment within the school” (Secondary School Counselor 2012). Counselors work in “diverse community settings designed to provide a variety of counseling, rehabilitation, and support services” (Counselors, 2010). When working in a school district as a counselor, you can either be an elementary school counselor, middle school counselor or a high school counselor. I interviewed a woman named Rachel Langan who is the school counselor for the Starpoint School on TCU's campus. She was very insightful to all of my questions even though she has only been working for a few years. Her job title is a school counselor. She received a Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education from Clemson University and a Masters in Professional and School Counseling from TCU and is also a certified teacher. She completed her education without taking any time off and finished in 5 years.

Those who are Counseling Psychology focuses on the clients emotional, social vocational, education health-related, developmental, and organizational concerns.
The objective of the counselor ought to be to work himself out of a job. The counselor should work with people in such a way as to encourage personal discovery of the truth about their situation and personal responsibility in planning a solution to their problem. In so doing, the counselor is a teacher, training people to develop healthy life management skills in any of the following areas: • relational skills • decision-making • dealing with crisis • conflict resolution • communication skills • thinking processes • self-perception • setting personal boundaries As the counselor helps people work through their current situation by merely guiding or facilitating the process, people learn for the future. People are more likely to change because they own the solution.

Guidance counseling, also called school counseling, has evolved over the years into an important part of the education system. Counselors are now taking on new roles in schools as leaders so much so that the ways in which counseling is being implemented has become a much talked about topic in schools. The effectiveness of counseling in schools is looked at by the education system more frequently than it was in the past. Though all school counselors must follow a national model for counseling, the roles and functions of counselors at various levels in the school system are different, however, school counselors at all levels of education before college are generally effective despite implications.
