I attended a regular scheduled Jefferson Parish School Board Meeting on June 7, 2016. This meeting was my fourth in the last three years. One of the first things I noticed was that security had increased. Security personnel scanned every person as they entered the room. The meeting commenced with Roll call and the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by award presentations to JPPSS Partners and support personnel. The Power Point illustrating the differences between Charter Schools and Magnet school was presented and was very informative. After all the presentations ended the board began to discuss the four Second Reading items. The Second Reading regarding Edgear, the grade book software, caught my attention. I was surprised and pleased with the level of security, which is important to maintain order especially when some topics are very controversial. It is important that everyone participating in the meeting feels safe and free to express their opinion. In some past meetings I attended, it seemed as if you honestly expressed your concerns then you might lose your job. Those meetings were under the old board made up of mostly business-backed members. In those meeting, teachers were treated as the enemy of the school system. Items were passed so quickly by the Board that it made hard for the audience to understand or even hear the decision made. I realized that several of the Items were discussed prior to the meeting, consequently, making it unnecessary to discuss in detail. The Board conducts business in an orderly manner, making their tough job a little bit easier. All decisions made by the Board affect numerous people in different ways which make their jobs challenging and time-consuming. The public’s ability to speak and challenge any proposal is the most important part of the proceedings. However, sufficient time is not always provided to the public to adequately state their concerns. Each time I attend a board meeting, I get a better understanding of the impact the board has regarding decisions they make about our schools, teachers, and students. As concerned stakeholders,
Local school boards must know and completely understand the basis of legal responsibilities and restrictions. These responsibilities and restriction include overseeing the operation of local public schools. The school board is held accountable for creation of policies, rules and regulations that provides guidance for the administration and operation of schools. The school board is perceived as a corporate body, which means an individual member of the board do not have more power than the overall power that is given to the board by the legislature. Therefore, individual school board members do not have the freedom to formulate policy, or act self-sufficiently of the school board as a whole. School board members are known to be public school officers, and are given powers by the legislature that help them fulfill their responsibilities.

The role of school boards “is to establish a vision for the community's schools that reflects a consensus of the board, community and district staff.” Although this is their main purpose, they also have to balance a district budget, create a district-yearly calendar, negotiate contract, construction, and approve district curriculum. (Stover 1) Although it might seem harsh to argue with school boards even though they do a lot, it is their job. They were appointed to lead and better the community, guide our children. If they are not mentally ready to be a leader, then why run for a school board member, the focus should be on the children, how to better education for them, and how to make sure they get the most out of every day coming to school.
At Community Boards, the skills and disciplines that I learned was that I was able to handle clients through phone calls more effectively and in a manner in which I can be neutral. I also learned to be very patient with some clients over the phone, where some phone calls had spent over an hour of the client’s time talking to me about their issues at their residence. I was able to cultivate the skill of being able to use different communication styles in order to deal with certain people and their styles, for often I would have to deal with people that very emotional, because of their situation, whether they be angry, sad, or hopeless, I had to alter my style of communication to accommodate their needs and try to calm them down. Attending an NA meeting during finals was one of my smarter decisions, as I procrastinate my work until the very last minute this week. However, in my opinion, going to a meeting was a good type of procrastination compared to other things I could be doing. Instead of going with the same friend this time, I asked a friend who was struggling with a ________ addiction. Not knowing that I was aware of his addiction, I asked him to join so I didn’t have to go alone; and he was more than happy to join me. I was very happy he agreed to join, because hopefully it helps him with his personal addiction, and he continues to return to the meetings.

According to standard ten of the Professional Standards for Educational Leaders (2015), a school leader should continuously seek the improvement of every aspect of schools. The superintendent should be addressing any misconceptions that are brought to the superintendents’ cabinets. The weekly meetings that were being held should be to discover methods and strategies to improve student success and develop professional and knowledgeable employees. Instead, this superintendent seems to protect others from being held accountable for what they say and do. According to standard two, school leaders should promote effective communication, set professional norms, promote integrity, fairness, transparency, trust, collaboration, perseverance, learning, continuous improvement, and professional behavior. This superintendent does not conduct himself as an example for others to follow and does not uphold professionalism while conducting meetings with the assistant superintendent; therefore, one must wonder what other business affairs have been conducted in an unprofessional manner and to what
By having school board meetings, it helps to see what the school’s needs. This is very important for the reason that this may be the only time that a concern parent or person voice might be heard. From this meeting, it was learned that the school board members are willing to help people that have concerns. An example, of this, was when the concern Pre-K parent was worried that she heard that Pre-K has been just a daycare. However, someone from the board mentioned to her that she would personally go with the parent the next day and show her how Pre-K is running during the day. This made the parent so happy because her concerns were being met. I have learned that school board members look out for the students and that they are the number one source that community members should go to if they have a concern or a suggestion to better their children’s
I went to the school board meeting on March 21, 2016 in Kanawha. The following people were at the council: Wayne Kronneman, Leah Deutsch, Ryan Hiscocks, Ryan Johnson, Jay Burgardt, Mona Buns, Gary Chizek, Todd Hammer, and Jon Harle. The others were mainly community member which included teachers, principals, parents and supporters. Some of the West Hancock staff included Mr. Peterson, Mrs. DeHart, Mrs. Bruns, Mr. Francis, Mrs. Gast and others. The other people who were there were parents and other community members. The first part of the meeting was the revision of the budget and presentation of the budget. This was given by Wayne Kronneman. He explained the budget of this year and how it compared to last years. Also he also talked about the budget for next year. After that they had a discussion with the

I chose the October 27th board meeting. Right away I could tell that the members on the board were clearly articulate educators at various schools in Fayette County. I couldn’t unfortunately hear the names of the individual members on the board. There was 2 people who ended up addressing the board. One a reverend who had issue with the math scores that the district had which were novice. He was also unhappy that 40% of students in the district made a novice in reading. He didn’t like that 2/3rds of the African American students couldn’t read on grade level. He had a lot of support from the crowd as he got a lot of applause and he even had some people on the school board nodding in agreement.
We cannot stress enough how important it is to include everyone in these meetings. It is our recommendation that this organization do this monthly. By doing so the community and all involved have a chance to be heard. Each person can express concerns and offer their opinions, this will improve communications and build relationships and reduce tensions between the community and the bureau. Not to mention it gives the bureau deputies a chance to see the different cultures, religions and ethnicities, which in turn will help deputies learn ways of communicating and help build skills in dealing with the different beliefs. From the beginning, where we were unfamiliar with each other and became a team, my team and I had started to learn each other name and getting to know each other. Throughout each meeting, we slowly start to feel more comfortable and open minded with each other. Not only are we getting familiar with each other, each meeting that was held we progress of becoming an effective team member, we learn our strengths and weaknesses of everyone. During the meetings, we learn many concepts from the textbook, “Communicating in Small Groups: Principles and Practices” by Steven A. Beebe and John T. Masterson. The meeting began when the school board members entered the large group instruction room and took their seats at a panel table angled to the side of the audience. The school board consists of nine elected members from the community. The members are as follows: Paul Ridley (President), Pat Vigliotta (Vice President), Helen Cumminskey (Secretary), Carla Manion ( Asst. Secretary), Timothy Bean (Treasurer), David Feely (Board Member), Keith Hatch (Board Member), Shane Oschman (Board Member), and Joseph Troutman (Board Member). Three members of the board were missing; however because of where the seats were located I could not see who was missing. Also, the member did not introduce themselves and left before people could address them.
It is not everyday when you can say the majority of your college class is you talking and the teacher listening, this is seminar. Coming from a family where heated debates were present almost daily, I already know if I were passionate about a topic I would never pass up an opportunity to express my opinions. For me, seminar has allowed me to grow in this confidence of expressing my thoughts as well as learning from others opinions. Having come from a high school that stressed the importance of student participation, I was not surprised by the amount I would actually have to speak in this class, however I was surprised by the importance of disagreements and the proper way to analyze text through underlining, highlighting and questioning and how it could aid my overall understanding of a text. Being a psychology major and extremely interested in social justice issues, seminar also opened my eyes up to the interesting perspectives of the strength of human nature.
Overall my experience of being in Lingleville ISD was a great experience that allowed me to learn a lot not only about the students in the classroom, but also helped me learn a lot about myself. Going in to this classroom I expected to only learn things about classroom management and maybe a few strategies. After spending a few days in this room I learned many other things. I did learn about classroom management but I also learned about content, strategies, organization, lesson planning, and inclusion adaptations. I learned that an inclusion special education student can really thrive being in a mainstream classroom, not only academically but also socially. It was a wonderful learning opportunity to get to be a part of that. My mentor teacher
