At my field placement’s school board meeting there were many issues that were discussed. The topic that was discussed was the functioning of the school day. During this discussion, the principal stated that the teachers and faculty were doing a great job in the mornings with getting the students from the buses to their proper classrooms. It was at this point that a teacher presented the idea of rotating teachers and faculty members outside each morning in order to maintain the morning drop offs. This idea was also proposed in order to create a schedule for all faculty to go by instead of randomly choosing faculty members to stand outside every morning. This discussion concluded with an unanimous vote for the proposal. Another topic that was discussed at the school board meeting was how nutritious the school lunches are. Many school board members were apprehensive that even though the school lunches were providing an adequate amount of daily vitamin and minerals, they should not be deemed healthy. Board members voiced their concerns about future cuts to extracurricular activities in order to emphasize core standards. By cutting the extracurricular activities the school (and school district) would be saving a great deal of money. The school administration also discussed that if the extracurricular activities were to be cut, that it would help to improve standardized test scores by providing more materials to the teachers and faculty. The school board members decided to measure how much profit they are getting from extracurricular activities and how well they did on previous standardized tests in order to make any other decisions. At Community Boards, the skills and disciplines that I learned was that I was able to handle clients through phone calls more effectively and in a manner in which I can be neutral. I also learned to be very patient with some clients over the phone, where some phone calls had spent over an hour of the client’s time talking to me about their issues at their residence. I was able to cultivate the skill of being able to use different communication styles in order to deal with certain people and their styles, for often I would have to deal with people that very emotional, because of their situation, whether they be angry, sad, or hopeless, I had to alter my style of communication to accommodate their needs and try to calm them down. The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) is used by students throughout the nation and is constantly under evaluation to give students a healthy and balanced meal. The program regulates and standardizes the lunch provided at all public schools, and even some private schools. Through the NSLP, it is ensured that school lunches are (generally) the same from school to school. The NSLP makes certain that a nutrient-rich lunch is available to all students that attend these NSLP using schools throughout the nation. Though it receives a great deal of controversy, this program is found efficient by parents and supplementary to children and adolescents alike.
I went to the school board meeting on March 21, 2016 in Kanawha. The following people were at the council: Wayne Kronneman, Leah Deutsch, Ryan Hiscocks, Ryan Johnson, Jay Burgardt, Mona Buns, Gary Chizek, Todd Hammer, and Jon Harle. The others were mainly community member which included teachers, principals, parents and supporters. Some of the West Hancock staff included Mr. Peterson, Mrs. DeHart, Mrs. Bruns, Mr. Francis, Mrs. Gast and others. The other people who were there were parents and other community members. The first part of the meeting was the revision of the budget and presentation of the budget. This was given by Wayne Kronneman. He explained the budget of this year and how it compared to last years. One reason our school should get a new lunch menu is many students do not like the food served. For example, a survey was taken and of the 31 students 100% said they disliked the food. As student Bryan Huang said, “The lunches are horrible, they need better choices and more choices.” In other words, the food is not delicious and there are not many choices. Also, when children don’t get proper nutrition they have trouble focusing in school. Most students do not buy lunch because they feel it is unappealing and do not like the food served. Many students go to other kids and ask for food. In addition, many students do not eat breakfast so they rely on lunch to fuel them for the day. We cannot have a school lunch reform where the needs of all students are not met. If only some, or less than the majority, of students are receiving the nutritional values they need, we need to adapt the reform to further achieve better standards for school lunch programs. For example, after a student finishes their meal, schools could offer a second serving of protein to their students. In effect, this will add a higher amount of calories to the students’ daily diets.
If schools serve lunches with whole grains and protein, the students would stay full and attentive much longer than a student with a lunch of sugar, white bread, and lush greens. Likewise, members informed the audience to do SAC so teachers, students, and parents can have a greater communication among the community. Not to mention, what was also found amusing was people talking about how they feel and got to bring up their concerns about the students education, whether the students parent, teacher or principal at the meeting. Near the end of meeting, registered speakers talked for three minutes to identify organization that they wanted to represented to the members of the chairs at the school board meeting. The first speaker was a student who went to a charter school; she explained her success and why she wants, Stetson, her school to stay open. The next speaker was a parent who explains why he wants Stetson Charter School to stay open. In addition, numerous community members spoke about in need for help in quality schools and want to know what schools are being closed. Also they voiced their dislikes of the way school board functions applies to schools and cited things that needed to be done. In an interview I conducted with Glenda Eliarda, a nurse of nearly 10 years, Mrs. Eliarda said that majority of the meals offered in our school are not nutritious. Pizza, nachos, fries, and chips are not highly beneficial to our health and development. Students should consume more meals that include leafy green vegetables and fresh fruits. Even though our school does offer healthy alternatives like salads and snack packs, giving us an option to eat unhealthily is one of the major problems I believe that needs to be addressed.
Many cafeteria workers and staff members in 49 states have said many students do not want the governments new school lunches. In my opinion, student voice refers not only to the perspectives of the student body of HWDSB, but also to the perspectives of each individual student, and the perspectives of the various demographics of students in the board. It encompasses the concerns, questions, and opinions of each of the almost 50000 students in the board. As a school board, HWDSB’s ultimate goal is to provide a learning environment for students which allows them to grow and flourish to their greatest potential. It is hard to do this without considering the perspective of students in matters that directly or indirectly affect them.
As I have completed my first week and had my first supervision, I had to prepare by doing the following below. I ensured that throughout the week I kept a notebook pad with me at all times to document all learning experiences, questions, and concerns I had from each department I explored. I also, made sure to take time out my week to plan the groups I wanted to facilitate, that would be beneficial to the agency. While taking time to do research, I made sure to reflect through my learning plan what I expected and wanted to gain from my internship. Additionally, for future supervision meetings, I will continue to do the following above but add in experiences that I would like to reflect upon that brought upon ethic dilemmas or scenarios that I was unsure about handling.

I attended a school board meeting on March 12, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. in the former middle school library. I had never been to a board meeting of any kind before this so I did not know what to expect. I knew parliamentary procedure was supposed to be followed in these meetings. Other than that, I did not have any expectations for the meeting.
