Athletics in American schools have always been controversial for many reasons. Some of these reasons include health concerns, safety precautions, and academic significance. Daniel H. Bowen and Colin Hitt wrote an article titled, “High-School Sports Aren’t Killing Academics” to present the factors of positive correlation between success in athletics and academics. I believe that athletics in high schools not only benefit students socially, but also academically.

Why do people resort to gun violence? This question has taken off in recent years, especially following the tragic shooting in Newtown, Connecticut in December, 2012 at Sandy Hook Elementary. It’s hard to say why exactly people resort to gun violence mainly because most shooters are usually killed by themselves or they are shot by police officers at the scene of the crime so we don’t have a chance to question them and figure out what they were actually thinking. Shooters that we are able to capture and question are usually so mentally gone that it’s hard to figure out what exactly they were thinking. There are a plethora of likely causes for school shootings, some more plausible than others. People believe that anything from video games to mental disorders to bullying to attention, and many others, could be the main reason for why people decide to shoot up schools. You can’t point to one thing and decide that is why the shooter attacked, it will usually be several factors that affect the shooter that they end up breaking down and think gun violence is perfectly fine.
Being a college athlete requires, year-round dedication. In order to be a college athlete, one must be willing to not only put time and effort in on and off the field, but in the classroom as well. Student athletes attend between twelve and twenty hours of class each week, and they are required to put in much time with practice, daily and games whenever they are held. College athletes can put in around twenty to sixty hours of practice a week, even during the off-season. After sports seasons begin, almost all of a college athlete’s time is spent dedicated to their sport, while somehow trying to maintain time to study, eat, sleep, and stay healthy. She draws attention to the potential detrimental effects on mental health, as well as the sacrifices and stress that come with putting athletics before academics.

We have a solution though, arming school staff. Arming school staff would make students feel safer, make the shooter feel more threatened if they shoot up a school, and give schools a way to defend himself if someone were to shoot up the school.
Sports programs have been an integral part of all schools. They support the academics of the school and therefore foster success in life. These programs are educational and help produce productive citizenship. They help students experience and build skills that may help them in their future, like interpersonal and time management skills. Education may kindle the light of knowledge, but sports help to maintain the proper physique. Sports are also an important means of entertainment and a use for energy after long hours of study. Sports increase a student’s performance not only in the classroom but also in their life.

Physical activity is important to most people, but others disagree with providing sports at school. In many different districts it is shown how youths that don't play sports have better grades than those who do play sports. Therefore, to help students become exceptional learners, their school should call off sports so teens can do their homework, schools don't spend large amounts of money, and parents and students regain their pride in academic achievements. Sports keep students happy, but not all people agree with the idea of them in school.
The combination of sports and school can overwhelm a young adult who thinks she can do it all. Lots of teens and even children think they can handle everything at once, when in reality they cannot. The time sports practices take up after school can leave a child with minimal to no time for homework or for studying. If I was in a sport I would be so overwhelmed with homework, chores, and practice that I’d be a wreck. Some of my fellow classmates that are athletes don’t do as well as my classmates who are not partakers in sports.

Thus, sports claim students’ attention and appraisal. He also claims that “Schools are supposed to be about academics, but for a long time sports has been given as much, if not more, importance”(1). He believes that academics should be deemed more important than sports in schools. Since sports are considered more important in schools, students, especially athletes, will value them more than academics.
