Truly, the book deserves the Schneider Family Book Award. It showed me and made me understand how it feels like to have an autism. It recognizes most of the social problems people with autism like instances when they cannot look people in the eye during conversations, and when they cannot express how they feel, collectively people misinterpret their actions. Not only did the story portrayed real-life scenarios about people with autism, but it also displayed the harsh reality and the difficulty of having a child with autism. It recognizes the efforts of parents in trying to build a relationship with their child, specifically when they are having a hard time knowing if they are showering enough love and support to their child with autism. It makes you realize that regardless religion, social status, salary, race and other things we seem to care so much about, we can look past and develop meaningful relationships. I felt like this book told the story of being deaf from one person’s viewpoint, but also touched base on the general Deaf experience when talking about how the people around him would react. But, because Mark was born hearing, and was always “so close” to being hearing, all his teachers, doctors, and grandparents wanted him to be considered hearing and to be “normal”. If he had been born deaf, he would have been accepted as a deaf person instead of being treated as if he had some kind of disease. I believe that this book presents the Deaf community in a positive light because although he talks about how his deafness made him feel like an outcast and like he was broken which led to his low self-esteem, it’s a beautiful outcome showing a boy’s growth and how he learned to be proud and understand that there is nothing wrong with being different from other people. Being different does not make you less than, nor does it make you inadequate. I learned so much about Carly and autism through this book. I knew many things like how children with autism will often rock or flap their hands but I also learned that they can learn just like the rest of us, it might just take them longer. These children have feelings and they have inner voices. Like Carly said in the last chapter, for years she would talk with her inner voice, she would even respond to people, but it took her awhile to express her outer voice. I also found her wit to be fascinating, especially for a young girl. Carly taught me so much in this book about children with autism and how intelligent they truly
Overall, I enjoyed reading the book because it opened my eyes to the deaf community and all that they go through which hearing people take advantage of. The autobiography doesn’t just tell you what his life was like; he makes you feel his emotions through every journey by explaining with countless details. The author wanted to stress how he had failed as a hearing person, and he just wanted to be appreciated as himself. As his eyes open to the deaf world, mine did too.
This book talk about the physical apperience of race. I like the fact that it was openly hounest about how society look at interracial couples. I also find it to be inerresting to introduce the fact that people are different to kids while they are young. This book gave the impression that mix children have wild sandy red color looking hair. When a child read this book it will teach them the difference but also open their mind to understand that everyone is different but they are still people. We are all unique in our own way.
This book was brilliant. There were moments that made me laugh, moments that made me tremble in my chair, moments that made me cry, moments that melted my heart, and moments that made me want to rip my hair out at the roots. This book has it all, and it delivers it through a cold but much needed message.
The short documentary video “Prisoners of Silence” focuses on neurodevelopmental disorders with a clear emphasis on autism. It further delves into the rather controversial method of treatment for autism known as facilitated communication, which was first developed in the early 1990s. Laura’s son’s name was Patrick. Patrick was a 6-years-old boy with autism. “I wasn’t eating right, I wasn’t showering regularly, I wasn’t sleeping well” (Brodey, p. 64). I also read the story told by Susan Marrash-Minnerly, which highlighted emotions that parents face. Susan also shed light on how wonderful children with special needs can be to a family, such as her ten-year-old third grader who had autism. Susan talked about how it was normal to feel angry at times, especially with the ups and downs a child’s disability may come with. “When I look back, I want to tell other parents that a child’s future is worth grieving over – but it’s not the end of the world” (Brodey, p. 75). After reading these stories, it became apparent to me that families who are raising kids with special needs, need support, kindness, and available resources. “I was fortunate to be surrounded by other moms who understood my pain…who could be supportive and emphatic.” (Brodey, p. 67). Overall, educators can use this kind of information that was shared in “The Elephant in the Playroom” about family systems and risk/resiliency by creating lines of open communication between families. The author, the mother of these two children, uses her language to make the reader feel connected with the struggles of the family and the elated feeling when the children are deemed functioning within normal levels. The Case of Temple Grandin paints a picture of a young woman’s determination and hard work while struggling with autism during a time when the disorder was unknown. This case discusses Grandin’s challenges, early diagnosis, growth and development in school, and support from her mother. Temple Grandin could not speak like the other children at the age of two, so because doctors could not find any physical issues she had been subsequently labeled as brain-damaged. To communicate with others, she would throw tantrums and scream. She could speak by three and a half years old with the help of speech therapy. A few years later at the age of five, Grandin was diagnosed with autism so her mother worked with her 30 minutes every day to keep her from being placed in an institution. At her aunt’s ranch, Grandin develops the “squeeze machine” a device used to apply pressure without being stimulating. Grandin excelles in school and receives her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Franklin Pierce College in 1970. After her graduation from college in 1970, Grandin attends Arizona State University where she earns a master’s degree in cattle in 1975. In 1989, Grandin earns her doctoral degree from the University of Urbana-Champaign in animal science. I liked this book because it shows a part of society which is usually kept hidden. Many people think schizophrenia is just a form retardation, but this book gives you a small amount of understanding for people with this disorder.
