The double standard for women is the hypocrisy in the reaction of society towards the action of the female, generally being unfair and different from the one towards the men. The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne shows the double standard for women reflected on the main character’s life and its effects on her and society. Regardless of what people say, the double standard for women still exist in modern society in the same areas where it resided in the past and it has even managed to spread into new parts of today’s society. Much like today's society, Hawthorne created a community that viewed the same sin in a different way for both genres. Hawthorne shows these behaviors in the Scarlet letter. Contrary to the reaction of people towards the confession of Dimmesdale's adultery, where he was admired for his bravery and honesty, and looked as a raw model, Hester was looked down on for the fact that she recognized that she made the same mistake and was made an example of how not to act and considered a liability of society. Honestly we still see these reactions , but in a different way; currently when it comes to sexual relations, a man who is known for having many partners is viewed by others as a “player” and as “macho”. On the other side, women who have many partners are known as “sluts” and disgraced for being “easy”. Moreover some studies by the NBC reveal that women see their social group decreased by 60% after having sex, while men experience an increase in their popularity after involving themselves in the same activities. People today live using double standards in the same way people in the past did, although it may not be identical to back then, it still carries the same principles and
