I have arrived at my new home. The boat trip was very rough, even to the extent of making me lose track of time. That unclean, floating mass of death was merciful enough to let me be. Too many children have suffered and died on the way to America. I miss Roger a little bit, and hope he comes soon. I'm very lonely and I don't know what I'll do to keep myself busy. Roger was nice enough to give me money to live off of until he comes to be with me. There are a lot of handsome men around here. A single woman could have a lot of fun, and never be by herself.
I approached the gym warily, but ready to play. It was the first day of basketball practice, so I was intimidated. I wasn't completely comfortable with playing against all of these monstrous high school boys yet; I was only a freshman. As I pushed the heavy gymnasium doors open, I encountered the mammoth-like creatures, none south of 6 feet tall, overshadowing me. I awkwardly walked toward the bench. Once I got there, my uneasy feelings had been flushed away. I opened my bag to the sight of my brand new shoes. I couldn't wait to break them in. They were the Air Jordan 11 Retro Space Jam's. Oh, they were beautiful. Their black finish glistened under the gym light.
The theme to this book is identity, all Esther really wanted to do was fit in. She figured that there was something wrong with her, with others, with society, that she didn’t want what other’s wanted. She didn’t want to get married unlike every other girl that got married because it was the norm. Esther didn’t find it fun nor got the reason why she would have to. With the pressures to fit in and be like everyone else with the fact that she was somewhat losing her identity she panicked and tried to go everywhere which eventually took a toll on her mind and body.
Her strong work ethic is fueled by her desire to own a beauty parlor but also by her need to earn an income in order to survive. Esther lives in an apartment rented out by Mrs. Dickson at a fair rate. Bringing in the knowledge acquired through research of the area in this time period, it becomes clear that Esther has a steady source of income since she has remained living in the same location for such an extensive period of time. Esther states, “…I been living in this rooming house for so long, I reckon I’m just another piece of furniture” (Intimate Apparel; 8). Esther’s capability to maintain housing is impressive because many immigrants struggles to find, and maintain, housing as well as employment (“The Lower East Side of New

Being part of my family is a blessing to me, because without them, I would not be where or who I am today. My family is the reason I am attending college. After having children, I realized that in order to give them better things in life I needed to have higher education. Not only that, I wanted my children to value education and have a better role model as I did growing up.
I have three siblings along with three nephews. I have a younger sister, older sister, and one older brother. My older sister is the one that had my nephews. We all lived under the same roof until I moved out for college. My mother was more like my father in the house because my father was away working for us, and even though my siblings are her children, it seems that they 're her siblings too. We always look out for each other because we mean so much to one another. I
