In 1915, Savile Lumley, an illustrator who designed childhood books, also designed one of the most famous and influential pieces of propaganda, that depicts a man blank faced in post-war times on a chair well dressed, with his daughter on his lap and son on the floor and reads “Daddy, what did YOU do in the Great War?” This propaganda poster made by Lumley was then printed by Johnson, Riddle, and Co and later published by the Parliamentary Recruiting Committee of London in the year 1915. The target audience for this artefact was all men who had not already enlisted in the Great War as the 2.4 million who had already enlisted were not enough for a war of this size. Contextually, this artefact was specifically created to target the common Propaganda at this time was all about challenging a man to serve his country. However, unlike other famous pieces like “Lord Kitchener wants you,” this artefact appeals to the emotional side, provoking guilt by using displaying kids in a poster that is promoting war. Rather than trying to use patriotism as the focal point it uses guilt and a charge to men. Similarly, in 1915, E.V Kealey produced a propaganda poster that read “Women of Britain Say-“GO!”” It depicts two women and a young kid bundled together in fear as the army men are just out of their window. These two posters are similar as they both demonstrate the importance of going to war. Where they differ is that the Kealey poster is saying that if you do not go to war you may lose your wife, whereas the Lumley poster says if you stay home, you will be a coward, and poses the internal questions of why would a woman want to be with a coward? By not using a wife in the artefact itself, it perhaps suggests that his wife does not want to spend time with him as she is Those who have served would likely view these words with a sense of honor knowing what they did to serve their country in a time of need, while men who have avoided serving their country would feel anxious and almost pressured. It is so effective as it forces the reader to ponder how they would feel when they respond that they did nothing to help the effort. At the same time, this photo speaks to women as who would ever want to marry a man who others view as a coward or as someone who is unable to protect her? The representation of a man who is unable to respond to his child with honor and pride serves as humiliation towards the man, damaging his character, and at the same time sending subliminal messages to women that those who did not choose to serve posses lack of strength and character. Unlike many other pieces of propaganda is that it speaks to all audiences. Here by going to war you are not just serving your country, but you are being a role model for your kids, and you are making your wife proud. Even though the real-life munitions worker was one of the basis of the Rosie campaign it took on a persona of its own. This persona was a fictitious character that was strong and bandanna-clad (“American Women in World War II”). Rosie was one of the most success recruitment tools in American history, and one of the most iconic images of working women during World War II. The most prominent image of Rosie the Riveter popularized in American culture was the version featured on the “We Can Do It!” posters created by the United States government (Hawkes). The Rosie the government made has a resemblance to Rockwell’s Rosie, but she is less masculine. This propaganda poster of Rosie the Riveter employed by the United States government was popular because she appealed to the sense of patriotism and common goal of the Second World War. Upgraded Rosie also showed that women could retain their femininity and womanhood in their service. Every Rosie the Riveter image played to this prevailing sense of patriotism that abounded in America during World War II. Patriotism was used as a primary motivator to recruit women for war work. One such propaganda poster that was spread across Great Britain features a female factory worker with her arms spread wide that reads: “Women of Britain come into the factories”. This particular poster targeted an audience of women and was used to persuade woman to become more involved in the workforce. By showing the young woman wearing a factory uniform while posing in a victorious manner, the poster has the effect of giving future female factory workers the impression that woman participating in factory work will lead to a victory for Great Britain and its Allies in the war.
Many soldiers who come back from the war need to express how they feel. Many do it in the way of writing. Many soldiers die in war, but the ones who come back are just as “dead.” Many cadets come back with shell shock, amputated arms and legs, and sometimes even their friends aren’t there with them. The fear of not knowing when their parents are coming home, and if they’ll come back to the same person they were when they left. Since we are incapable of hiding violence and the act of war from children, it is better to help them understand the meaning behind it and teach them that violence is not always the answer. Children react based on what they see and hear, and if the community and world around them portrays positive things, then the child will portray a positive attitude as well.
My interviewee went through a lot during World War II and sharing her amazing story left me evaluating her words for a long time, rethinking and still not willing to imagine the pain. She was one of the 150,000 American woman served in the Women’s Army Corps during the war years. They were one of the first ones to serve in the ranks of the United States Army. She recalls being teased a lot about being a young woman in a uniform but was very proud of it. Women finally were given the opportunity to make a major contribution to the national affair, especially a world war. It started with a meeting in1941 of Congresswoman Edith Nourse Rogers and General George Marshall, who was the Army’s Chief of Staff. Rogers asked General to introduce a bill to establish an Army women’s corps, where my interviewee, Elizabeth Plancher, was really hoping to get the benefits after the World War II along with other women. As evidenced by his words, it was not simply a matter of going over there at the age of seventeen to fight for one’s country. Rather, it was a matter of leaving behind the safety and security of the home to which you were accustomed, with little expectation of returning. Both Wilfred Owen’s “Dulce et Decorum Est” as well as “next to of course god america i” written by E.E. Cummings preform critic on war propaganda used during the first world war. Finally, Tim O’Brien conveys how society’s view on courage plays an important part in the creation of guilt for soldiers in the Vietnam War. At the start of “On the Rainy River”, Tim O’Brien is drafted to be in the Vietnam War against his will. O’Brien says, “I was drafted to fight a war I hated...the American War in Vietnam seemed to me wrong.,” (40). However, regardless if one was against the war, they were forced to anyway. In adhesion, society developed one stance on the war pertaining to courage, which is that the man needs to do the bravest thing, which was to go to war and fight. Although this also ties with the theme of masculinity with men being tough, it more importantly exemplifies courage in going to risk your life for the good of the country.
