What is Savant Syndrome? Savant Syndrome is an uncommon but spectacular condition in which people with various developmental disabilities have problems interacting normally. This condition is often seen in people with autism that has limited abilities with language, socialization, and daily living. Autism is a moderately rare condition resulting from a complex developmental disability that typically appears during the first three years of life – which we learned in class. Despite daily limitations people who are diagnosed with savant syndrome tend to develop surprising skills above their apparent cognitive level, and sometimes even above the level of a very smart person. From my understanding of the article these abilities are presented in autistic people with abnormal brain functioning. In addition, most of these brain abnormalities occur in both the left and right hemisphere of the brain. The article stated “most autistic people that present savant skills or abilities are likely to have deficient difficulties in the left hemisphere of the brain, whereas the right hemisphere compensates for parts of the brain that are undamaged. The only way to know things one never learned {sometimes at complex levels} is for knowledge to be factory installed or genetically transmitted. Experts believe each of us can tap into our own islands of savant intelligence that are simply overwhelmed by everyday cognition. Even though this belief has not been proven yet, I agree with the expert assumption and believe each of us can tap into our savant intelligence by understanding both our brain and human potentials. In fact, all of us have some of the same circuitry pathway intrinsic to savant functioning but this can be less accessible because most of this society tends to be left brained. Whereas, most savants use their right brain more than the left. In the video presentation of How Difficult Can This Be? The F.A.T. City Workshop, Richard Lavoie is able to simulate several of the difficulties that a student with a learning disability has to face at school. Some of the difficulties experienced by the students are intrinsic to the disability itself, but many other difficulties are directly related with the emotions that the student experiences when attending a class, and as a result of his or her interactions with teachers and classmates. Both the United States law and the education system, have the opportunity to make a huge difference in the learning experience of every student with disability. Students with disabilities need to be guided to a path to education that is both feasible and accessible for them; with achievable goals, and by being provided what they need in order to succeed, and to be able to overcome any obstacles.
The cerebellum is usually associated with motor movements. Concerning this topic it is interesting to note the research of Dr. Eric Courchesne. He found that the VI and VII lobes of the cerebellum were smaller in autistics than those of a normal brain. This condition is called hypoplasia. The reverse condition, which is what Piven encountered, is called hyperplasia. Courchesne linked the cerebellum with attention shifting . There are many disorders or syndromes that cause people to behave and act differently than others. Out of all these syndromes, I picked one of them. This is a very rare syndrome and an estimate of 4% of children in the U.S. have it. It is known as the translocation down syndrome. Translocation down syndrome is a type of down syndrome caused by rearranged chromosome material. A child with translocation down syndrome has 3 #21 chromosomes instead of the two pairs. Here,one of the chromosomes is attached to another and the extra chromosome is what causes the health problems is what causes the health problems associated with the disorder known as down syndrome.
Autism is a form of neurodevelopment disorder in the autism spectrum disorders. It is characterized by impaired development in social interactions and communication, both verbal and non-verbal. There is an observed lack of spontaneous acts of communication; both receptive and expressed, as well as speech impairments. A person diagnosed with Autism will also show a limited range of activities and interests, as well as forming and maintain peer relationships. The individuals will display limited interests, which are often very focused and repetitive. He or she is likely to be very routine oriented and may show behavioral symptoms such as hyperactivity, impulsivity, aggressiveness, and self-injurious behaviors.
Schizophrenia is not a new mental disorder. Through written documents, it can be traced to the Pharaoh days in Egypt and even further back to the second millennium before Christ. The disease was first identified as a mental illness by German psychiatrist Dr. Emile Kraepelin in 1887. Kraepelin, identified by H.J. Eysenck's Encyclopedia of Psychology as the founder of modern scientific psychiatry, psychopharmacology and psychiatric gene, was the first to make a distinction in the psychotic disorders between what he called dementia praecox and manic depression. He believed that dementia praecox was primarily a disease of the brain, and particularly a form of dementia. Kraepelin named the disorder 'dementia praecox' (early dementia) to distinguish it from other forms of dementia (such as Alzheimer's disease) which typically occur late in life. It wasn’t until 1911 when Swiss psychiatrist, Eugen Bleuler, coined the term "schizophrenia". Bleuler changed the name to schizophrenia because Kraepelin's name was misleading as the illness was not a dementia (it did not always lead to mental deterioration) and could occur late in life as well as early. Schizophrenia" comes from the Greek roots schizo (split) and phrene (mind) to describe the fragmented thinking of people with the disorder. He was also the first to describe the symptoms of schizophrenia as "positive" or "negative." Both Bleuler and Kraepelin subdivided schizophrenia into categories, based on symptoms and prognosis. Schizophrenia is a devastating mental disorder that strikes teens and young adults crippling their brain and fragmenting their mind. Victims of schizophrenia remain in endless mental agony constantly confused and in terror. They suffer constantly from hallucinations, delusions, and paranoia. Approximately 1% of the world population live with this disorder making it one of the most common mental disorders in the world. Despite the numbers, there is no known cause or cure for schizophrenia. So what is the disorder, why is it so hard to eliminate, and why do so many people fall victim to the fragmented mind?

I bet if you pick a random person from the street and ask him/her what they know about Schizophrenia they would reply “I don’t know, is it a heart disorder? “This topic at hand comes somehow from a personal encounter that dates back several years ago. When I was in grade 12, our school organized a trip to the Psychiatric Hospital of the Cross located in Jal El-Dib, as part of the community service activity. During our visit, I came across a very weird man. This man was having a conversation with the wall, as if somebody real was standing in front of him. All of my classmates started making fun of him and calling him a wacko. Being curious, I asked the doctor what was wrong with him and he revealed to me that this man, Elie, was diagnosed with Schizophrenia. Later on I had the privilege to approach Elie and talk to him. Out of surprise, Elie turned out to be a very funny and nice guy. He told me that he was diagnosed with Schizophrenia when he was 23 years old and how this mental disorder affected his life negatively. Elie’s case touched me at heart and made me realize that people are deeply uninformed about Schizophrenia and its effects on people diagnosed with this mental disorder.
Savant syndrome isn’t bad or harmful at all to the autistic person it is actually highly beneficial to the person and other people so there is no need for treatment for this. There have been no previous records of anyone trying to treat savant. A big benefit that Charlie had from Raymond was being able to count playing cards. Autism is a disorder characterized by significant problems in communication and social functioning. Autism is actually called Autism Spectrum Disorder and encompasses a broad range disabilities such as Asperger syndrome, Rett’s Syndrome, and Pervavasive Development Disorder (Dunlap & Fox, n.d.). There are also varying degrees of the disorder from low-functioning (no communication and no social interaction) to high-functioning (some communication and inappropriate but existent social skills.)
There are people in this world that have a problem understanding the difference between what is real and what is unreal. Most of us think that is just silly and childlike, but it is a reality for about 51 million Americans (Coon). These people suffer from schizophrenia, a psychosis characterized by delusions, hallucinations, apathy, and a “split” between thought and emotion (Coon). Schizophrenic suffers my show inappropriate emotions to certain situations. They laugh at the death of a loved one, or show no emotion also known as flat affect to news of happiness. To an onlooker they may appear to be crazy, rude or even mentally disturbed. Unfortunately schizophrenic suffers have to deal with these judgments, when they don’t understand why they are getting these reactions. Schizophrenia comes in more than one form. There is disorganized schizophrenia, Catatonic schizophrenia, paranoid schizophrenia and undifferentiated schizophrenia.
Now, children with intellectual disabilities are respected, and cared for just like anyone else. This was not true prior to the mid 19th century. People and doctors feared them and they were often ignored. As time continued throughout history things changed for the better. Some people may have believed that someone either had an intellectual disability or not, but this is not true. There are different levels to it. Children with an intellectual disability can and do attend regular schools with a little extra help, but they do experience emotional and behavior problem along the way. Not all causes for intellectual disabilities can be found, but there are a few known ones. With all of this said, there are ways to prevent intellectual dishabilles and ways to treat it as well.
Most people take the simple things in life for granted. But for others those simple things are great struggles. Things like social skills and staying focused are struggles for people with autism. When you look up the definition of autism the most common thing that pops up is “Difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and repetitive behaviors” (What is Autism?). But the difficulties for people with autism vary with each type they have. In the five different disorders in ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorders), there are many variations of symptoms and who it affects. The people living with autism face hard struggles every day.
