In William Golding's The Lord of the Flies, the boys are stranded on an island and are fighting to survive. They have started to create a civil society, Ralph is their leader. These boys have been doing everything they can to survive, but it all turns upside down. Over time these boys have been shifting to be savages. They are turning against each other and it starts a war. The theme of this novel, which is civilizations vs savagery, is evident through examples of good and evil and by the way of the characters as they adapt to their new life. It symbolizes the power it has when one has it in their hands. Piggy came up with the idea that whoever has the conch shell has the power to speak. This was an example of civilization because the boys relied on the conch shell to bring them together, together like civil society does. Another example is setting ground rules and electing a leader. The boys elect Ralph as a leader, just like how a civilization would, and Ralph gave every group of boys a job to do daily. Ralph tells the group of boys “We’ve got to have special people to look after the fire. Any day there may be a ship out there.and if we have a signal going they’ll come and take us off. And another thing. We ought to have more rules”(Golding 51). Ralph is setting rules for the boys to be more civilized and to have responsibilities. He is trying to give the boys hope and trying to give them an idea of what's ahead of them. Ralph is focused on the boy's safety and decision making, so he sets out these rules like keeping on the lookout for signal fire. The conch and these rules that Ralph set are a bunch of ways to keep the boys on the island civilized and together, most importantly, safe. Cut her throat. Spill her blood”(Golding 81). This shows that Jack and his crew show no mercy and like to perform violently. Their chanting shows how they are delightfully killing the pig and they are doing it in unity. This shows that the boys are slowly turning into savages. But, there was this one character, Simon, that saw the boys go rogue. Although Simon does not like to speak in front of big crowds, he spoke up and said “Maybe there is a beast.Maybe it’s only us”(Golding 106-107). Simon is trying to say that maybe they are the beasts. That there is cruelty going on and darkness in the boys. He’s suggesting that maybe the boys should be afraid of themselves instead of an outside figure. Therefore, the author in the novel Lord of the Flies tries to portray a theme of how mankind can go from being civilized to turning into savages. He describes mankind through the innocence of the boys and savagery through the Lord of the Flies. The Lord of the Flies is an example of the cruelness that lies inside of all humans. The innocence of the boys is lost in the end because they are acting on their fears and
