Satire is form of comedy in which flaws in people or society are chastised in order to prompt change in the objects of criticism. Regardless of how long ago comedy itself may have existed, the concept of satire was introduced by the Roman satirists, Juvenal and Horace. The tones conveyed in their writing characterize the main modes of satire, being Horatian and Juvenalian, and are still used in satire today. Presently, two popular forms of comedy that employ satirical elements include parody news sources and comedic performances. Although satirical writing has evolved throughout history, many aspects of satire are still apparent in both the articles of parody news sources, like The Onion, and the performances of professional comedians, like
Satirical humor entertains the audience so that the people appeal some jokes and comic ideas more enjoyable to visualizes. Satire demonstrates something very safe and also not very cynical to the society. Sometimes, satire can misunderstand people that some people find it's an insult to the politics.Satirical humor can also be a tool to communicate people, so people can learn and get involved more about issues in politics. There are some people like comedians that expresses satirical humor in politics. Also, some comedy shows that expresses political satire. For example, some of the famous comedians that I found funny in satirical humor will be James Colbert, Jimmy Fallon, and Jon Stewart; they also host their satirical shows: The Colbert
One form of satire that particularly stands out is his use of diction. Both speakers are so focused on oppresing on the other group that they allow emotions to invade their arguments. For example in
According to Everything’s an Argument by Andrea A. Lunsford and John J. Ruszkiewicz, “Humor has always played an important role in argument…” (38). Humor itself is something that activates amusement or laughter. Moreover, in popular culture satire is a tool that is used to point out things in our society. Satire opens the minds of people to philosophies they might completely deny, using humor. There are many elements of satire that identify flaws within our society. A couple of satire elements that will be discussed are irony and exaggeration. In addition, a parody is used in popular culture as a way to mock or mimic situation or person.
This paper will address the failures of political satire to encourage political action, despite the fact that studies have shown that it is conducive for political knowledge acquisition. People may be attracted to political satire because it turns an undiscussable topic as politics into a light-hearted affair. Though not discussing the philosophy of humor per se, Noel Carroll’s theory of emotions can help explain how shows such as South Park, The Daily Show with John Stewart, and others can seta emotional response conducive to accepting other viewpoints. Though I agree with this point, an aporia rises when we ask why is it that these same shows have not sparked discussions or social reaction to the content on these shows? For instance, why is it that discussions about the legitimacy of Occupy Wall Street, gender justice, or even the two party system of democracy have not occurred when viewing these shows, despite the fact these topics are frequently discussed? In this paper, I will demonstrate that although political satire can be used to set a positive emotive response, that it als...

Satire is a great tool used by many writers and actors since ancient times. The earliest example that we know about is a script from 2nd millennium BC in Ancient Egypt (Definition: Satire) and since then has evolved into a great part of our society. Satire is used to point out the faults of human vice in order for change and reform in either of two ways. There is a very bitter Juvenalian or a mild and light Horatian. In order to fully understand these forms of satire, method, purpose, and applications will be addressed.

Raised up in Columbia, Maryland, McGruder went on to graduate with a degree in African American Studies from the University of Maryland. While working in the Presentation Lab on the university campus, McGruder developed the idea for the original comic strip. In 1997 the comic strip first debuted in the campus newspaper, The Diamondback (The Boondocks- Official Site). Mad Magazine, The Simpsons, Saturday Night Live. In our society, satire is among the most prevalent of comedic forms. This was not always true, for before the 18th century, satire was not a fully developed form. Satire, however, rose out of necessity; writers and artists needed a way to ambiguously criticize their governments, their churches, and their aristocrats. By the 18th century, satire was hugely popular. Satire as an art form has its roots in the classics, especially in the Roman Horace's Satires. Satire as it was originally proposed was a form of literature using sarcasm, irony, and wit, to bring about a change in society, but in the eighteenth century Voltaire, Jonathan Swift and William Hogarth expanded satire to include politics, as well as art. The political climate of the time was one of tension. Any criticism of government would bring harsh punishments, sometimes exile or death. In order to voice opinions without fear of punishment, malcontented writers turned to Satire. Voltaire's Candide and Swift's Modest Proposal are two examples of this new genre. By creating a fictional world modeled after the world he hated, Voltaire was able to attack scientists, and theologians with impunity. Jonathan Swift created many fictional worlds in his great work, Gulliver's Travels, where he constantly drew parallels to the English government.
John Oldham once said “I wear my Pen as others do their Sword”. To each affronting sot I meet, the word is Satisfaction: straight to thrusts I go, and pointed satire runs him through and through.” Satire works as a weapon to challenge ideas in society. Satire is the use of humor, irony, or exaggeration to uncover and criticize absurd ideas in society that people might not otherwise question. Confronting an issue with satire makes the audience more aware and open to new ideas, making them more likely to agree with the author.
Satire invites critical self-introspection from us in a way that no other media can. It also acts as an unbiased mirror that reflects the mirror image of the flaws of our society. This beautiful process, when unhindered and uncensored, is the epitome of western freedom of speech, which is the single most significant right that deserves to be cherished and defended. According to McClennen, however, all mirror images of satire might not be beneficial. She believes that shows such as South Park and The Simpsons, which are not afraid to attack anything, do not lead to any kind of positive political discourse.
Nowadays young people are becoming interested in political news and learning about what is happening around the world. The traditional ways of a tedious man just reading a script not only takes away the interest in listening to the news but also makes it harder for the audience to build a relationship with the deliverer. Irony builds a stronger connection with the audience while addressing serious topics that need to be heard and discussed.Comedian Jon Stewart of The Daily Show is an example,“For young viewers in particular, “The Daily Show” provided a more trustworthy daily news summary than almost any show on Fox News or CNN”(Nussbaum). Throughout the show, irony helped him deliver an important message to the audience while keeping them interesting.
When using satire your argument becomes witty and entertaining. By adding in sarcasm, irony, and other things using this element of writing can drive home the point you are trying to make or it may completely fly over the heads of your audience. Satire paints a picture of your argument rather than just stating facts; it allows your audience, to feel more connected to your side of the argument.
Satire is defined as “the use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people’s stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical issues” (Oxford). The best satirical writers can make the readers believe that an idea is “logical and practical.” This is seen in great abundance in Aldous Huxley’s novel, Brave New World. Through his writing, Huxley uses satire to effectively point out the flaws of society at the time. Even though Brave New World was written in 1931, the satirical points Huxley makes are still relevant in today’s world.
