Many people tend to use humor as a positive communication skill to make us laugh. It has long been used as a tool to navigate how we better understand media and politics. In today's crucial times of political chaos, social unrest and in-fighting between political parties, the use of Satire humor is more relevant than ever before. According to Oxford dictionary, satire is defined as the use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people's stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical issues. In the last decade there has been a staunch increase in technology and a rise in social media, this comes with its own benefits and downfalls. The use of satire humor has been represented …show more content…
During the 2016 Presidential bid, numerous satirical news shows repeatedly ran sketches that sought to slaw, belittle and mock both President Trump and Hilary Clinton. Satire was used to pass opinion and create a divisive response from audiences, in an attempt to garner support for the political agenda that was most appropriate to the news channels ideologies. For example, the news broadcaster " Fox News" Is notorious for acquiescing support for the Republican party and are outspoken advocates for President Trump. American media, television show Saturday Night Live, has been lampooning American politics since the show debuted in 1975. It mocks both Republican and Democrats mercilessly and shows no discrimination between political ideologies. Although Saturday Night Live maintains that is sole purpose is to make audiences laugh, and not sway public political opinion, it is evident that the show mocks Republican candidates more frequently than it does Democratic ones. The importance of Satire humor in American politics can be best exemplified by this example of how much power it has to change political views and persuade audiences through the
Satire is form of comedy in which flaws in people or society are chastised in order to prompt change in the objects of criticism. Regardless of how long ago comedy itself may have existed, the concept of satire was introduced by the Roman satirists, Juvenal and Horace. The tones conveyed in their writing characterize the main modes of satire, being Horatian and Juvenalian, and are still used in satire today. Presently, two popular forms of comedy that employ satirical elements include parody news sources and comedic performances. Although satirical writing has evolved throughout history, many aspects of satire are still apparent in both the articles of parody news sources, like The Onion, and the performances of professional comedians, like
For example, the comedy shows The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon expresses satirical humor concerning politics. His show also demonstrates political satire by telling jokes and even impersonating political figures for the audience. He creates humor through sarcasm that focuses on real issues. His sarcastic humor causes others to feel more confident in their criticism toward politicians. For example, “Jimmy Fallon expresses his humor about Donald Trump, impersonating his appearance and imitating his voice while talking about politics. He uses his humor by impersonating Donald Trump and his sweeping generalizations with Madea (Rogo).” Jimmy Fallon shows people his views through humor and it creates a sense of community to express their agreeable and disagreeable views. As we discussed some ideas about satirical humor that affects political changes, it was important to reveal their feelings about changes in life and drove them to look upon their society or government more
Immigrants. People who we natives have labeled as “aliens” and “foreigners” at a time when we should’ve welcomed them with open arms, when we should’ve embraced them with our compassion and considered them with our empathy. Isn’t this humanity? Treating others as we expect to be treated? But what have we done besides ostracizing them? Nothing. Despite the many benefits that they bring along with them, we insist on focusing all attention to the few temporary disadvantages that they have. In reality, if we natives had conducted the least bit of professional research of the benefits versus the disadvantages of immigrants, we would come to the realization that their benefits outweigh their costs, and that they are much more valuable to our society, then we expected them to be.
According to Everything’s an Argument by Andrea A. Lunsford and John J. Ruszkiewicz, “Humor has always played an important role in argument…” (38). Humor itself is something that activates amusement or laughter. Moreover, in popular culture satire is a tool that is used to point out things in our society. Satire opens the minds of people to philosophies they might completely deny, using humor. There are many elements of satire that identify flaws within our society. A couple of satire elements that will be discussed are irony and exaggeration. In addition, a parody is used in popular culture as a way to mock or mimic situation or person.
Within the past year, I’ve become a big fan of The Onion and it’s satirical articles. The articles in The Onion poke fun at the world that it is all around us, whether it be world news, politics, or simply people we encounter in our daily lives. It’s a way of helping us cope and with the tough world we live in, as well as reassuring us that some of the frustrating situation we are a part of are normal and the people we find annoying annoy other people as well. It succeeds in that quite well, especially if one understands the satire in the article, and if they relate to it.
When I was a young, naive, and reckless preteen I was arrested for stealing panties. Yes, panties. You see, I was under the impression that attending junior high without proper matching undergarments would immediately be cause for ridicule from my fellow classmates in the locker room. However, my mother did not see the necessity for such things and refused to spend money on costly, unnecessary expenses. I desperately needed them and shoplifted a lovely red pair. I was caught, arrested, ashamed and gracefully served my sentence with a newfound respect for the law. No matter how severe or minute a crime is, it should not go unpunished. A teenager committing petty theft and an immigrant crossing our borders illegally are both crimes in the United States. Billions of dollars and resources are spent each year in an effort to apprehend vagrant aliens who illegally cross our borders into the United States. Illegal immigration is a burden thrust upon the United States yielding
Homelessness poses a serious threat in all countries as people are exposed in an unsafe environment and try to live on change. “Do you have any spare change?” No I don’t have spare change, get a job you animal. We see people all over the streets holding signs and bringing their children to ask for change but during that whole time they could be doing something productive, like getting a job. Homelessness is a problem everywhere and its worse in other countries but here in America we have it rough. We have the means to fix homelessness with giving jobs to them in the fields of science and energy.
Humorists often promote discussion about harsh messages through their work. When imagining a humorist, many people may think of a cartoonist, or more specifically, a political cartoonist. Political cartoonists illustrate controversial topics in society and highlight an angle that inspires conversation and debate around a topic when people might not normally be open to talking about it. A recent political cartoon depicted a donkey and an elephant--representing their corresponding political parties--competing in a high jump of moral
Satire often consists of the use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people's stupidity usually in the context of current political issues. Last Week Tonight with John Oliver a YouTube series made a segment on Net Neutrality which uses satire to expose the issue that the rollbacks of Net Neutrality laws will have under the Trump administration. Without Net Neutrality laws companies are essentially able to limit users ability to connect to any website they desire. Last Week Tonight’s use of Irony, Sarcasm and ridicule of specific topics attracts viewers into their show for leisurely laughs but they often learn about serious topics after watching the segment. John Oliver’s ability to speak humorously about such
With the abundance of people annoyed with many news stations for false or unimportant news, the popularity of satirical spin-offs has grown exponentially. Saturday Night Live’s example of this is called “Weekend Update.” In this they satirise news stories or the news stations themselves. This example is from season 42 episode 13, where the cast comments on Donald Trump's executive orders as the new president of the united states. They do this in a juvenalian form of sative as they talk about racial issues in an unflattering light; however, this is all just to show the salient issues with Trump’s plan. SNL uses irony and hyperbole to show the Issues with the orders and how uninformed Trump is.
student at the University of Chicago who argues how comedy in politics has a negative impact on social change. Lopez introduces the idea of cynicism and how “it negatively impacts political participation, volunteer work, interpersonal trust, and increases levels of social suspicion and xenophobia” (160). Cynicism makes people believe they know what is happening about a subject and blinds them from accepting different views in politics (Lopez 160). All these factors that cynicism effects are characteristics that are closely related with social change. To support his claim, Lopez states, “The first major study of “The Daily Show’s” impact on cynicism indicated that viewers rated George W. Bush and John Kerry more negatively than non-viewers, and that they were also more cynical about the news media and the electoral system“(160). By watching these news shows that incorporate comedy, the public becomes incapable of grasping new ideas, leaving them with a lack of knowledge about a particular topic. This has a direct effect on social change because the public will no longer advocate for the choices that they make, and instead will “slip into becoming a democracy merely in structure, rather than substance” (Lopez,
For decades, satire has been a literary staple—almost every political, social, or societal shift features the genre to a degree. Satires are complicated, thought-provoking, and only after thought, humorous; satires function by taking the plausible and making it ridiculous. Despite being touted as a “means of social and political change,” satire appears, based on evidence from Evelyn Waugh’s Put out More Flags, to not affect the social and political climate at all. In Put out More Flags, Waugh satirizes two features of society at the time: people are selfish and the corrupt slow bureaucratic system. However, the lack of changes between 1942, when Waugh wrote the book, and 1950 shows that satire does not have a significant or concrete effect on society.
As an avid reader of political cartoons on a daily basis I enjoy the humor and cynicism found within these forms of speech. Not only can they poke fun at politicians for their behavior, but, they often raise a strong sense of values and morals in the person that reads them. Whether a person agrees or disagrees with the way a certain topic is portrayed in the cartoon it accomplishes the artists goal of making their reader stop and ponder for a moment about the topic being covered and how it relates to them. From topics currently facing the United Nations, our federal government or current news events, the cartoonists use a medium that was once reserved for innocent humor and changes it so that it draws the readers attention (since it is a cartoon and people seem to enjoy reading the funnies), and makes a statement, whether direct or indirect, that often makes people speak about or try and change the topics outcome.
In the 1900s political comedy was based on black and white cartoons, and comics, now political comedy is on television as well as on social media. Because of things like social media political comedy has been taken to a level in which anyone can view or voice their opinion on political comedy. Comedy itself is on a much higher level as far as shows and other things comedians participate in to reach out to their audience. In my opinion although political comedy wasn’t all that popular in the 1900s it sure is now because of the social change. My next topic focuses on things that may seem
If there is one way to bring a smile to someone’s face, it is laughter. Funny jokes, comical stunts, sarcasm- Every person is different when it comes to what makes them laugh. Some find dry humor comical. Others think sarcasm or joke-filled ranting are the best. ‘Comedy’ is such a broad term, broad enough to allow everyone to find something they find comical. In fact, ‘comedy’ includes a specific type of drama, one where the protagonist is joyful and happy endings are expected. Comedy is like a drug; it allows you to escape reality. When we say the word ‘comedy’ in the present, we are generally referring to a type of performance which provides humor. However, in its broadest sense, comedy has only one purpose: comedy makes people smile and
