Satellites in Modern Society
What do people think of when they think of a satellites? A big piece of metal just floating around in space? According to Merrium-Webster a satellite is a machine that is sent into space that moves around the earth, moon, sun, or a planet. Satellites help Americans without them even knowing it. Everyday Americans call people all around the country, watch television, and listen to the radio, but how do they think they do that? Almost always the answer is satellites. Satellites have impact America in weather, search and rescue programs, and in astronomy.
When bad weather is approaching, satellites are the reason meteorologists are able to inform Americans so quickly about the weather. In the article “Hurricane: Tracking and Researching Hurricanes,” satellite images are important to weather forecasters because by putting hours of pictures together from satellites into motion, they can gather information on the track and development of a tropical cyclone. Doing this helps Americans know where the cyclone would hit and when it would hit. Although we have found new technology that has helped Americans immensely, researching new things never stops. According to Scientific American, “The Nation Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) plans to launch new geostationary and polar-orbiting satellites that have greater resolution, helping forecasters to better predict the path that a nascent storm will take, as well as its intensity.” They also stated that “forecaster would be able to give U.S. residents and average of fourteen minutes of warning before a tornado would strike, for example” (“Improving Weather Prediction”). We have natural disasters in America every day and satellites help us know...

Weather, search and rescue programs, and astronomy are just three of the many ways satellites have impacted Americans. Satellites have made American’s lives easier and help them find new things that they would have never known without them. We now know more about the world than we ever have before and we are still learning new ways to find out more about Earth. Satellites have saved so many lives and help us prepare for natural disasters that could happen at any time. Without satellites our world would be drastically different and we would not know the majority of the things we do now without them.
Although many people could say that it would just be a waste of time because of the other military development failures, the national budget is shrinking. In the late 1990s, the U.S. government started work on a new type of spy satellite. The project cost U.S. taxpayers billions of dollars, but none of the satellites were built. The reason for t...
Although Greensburg was almost entirely destroyed, the storm helped to reinforce the important role that storm chasers play in the tracking and warning process of severe weather. By having well-trained, experienced people in the field, meteorologists and weather services are better able to track the exact location and characteristics of tornadic events, relaying that information to the public faster and more accurately than ever before.
to reduce the number of fatalities in serious storms is to give people more warning time for them to go to a safer place. Many times in hurricanes people are told to evacuate there city or state. The more time that people have to do this the more that people will do this. Throughout the entire hurricane season meteorologists keep a close watch on the Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans. They examine pictures of the area taken by satellites, and also take information on air pressure, wind speed, and temperatures.
Unlike their Soviet counterparts, who were subject to "government-sponsored terror", American scientists faced more favorable conditions (Eaton par. 3). American scientists also received tremendous public support, and many inventions often benefited everyday life (Eaton par. 4). An importance source of motivation for those involved in the United States' space efforts was the fact that research led to the development of many pieces of everyday technology. Technology such as "wireless communications" was derived from NASA's research ("Space Race" par. 24). These technologies not only benefited NASA, but they also benefited ordinary life. In addition, the American space program received a high amount of public support. Media, including television, films, and magazines, developed public awareness and public support for space exploration (Nagel and Hermsen
...save lives. Another advance in hurricane safety is weather predicting technology. At the time of the storm, there were no warning sirens and although the people were aware that bad weather was coming, they were used to dealing with storms and were unaware of the deadly disaster that was approaching.
The Soviets took a lead by launching the first successful satellite into space. On October 4, 1957 the Soviets launched the first successful satellite into orbit. It was called Sputnik I and it successfully entered Earth’s orbit. This first success started the Space Age. The Soviets successful launch shocked the whole world, giving the Soviet Union the respect for putting the first man-made object into outer space. The Americans successfully launched their first satellite four months after Sputnik I, called the Explorer I. The US would have had the first satellite in orbit if they were allowed to use military rockets from the beginning. But, Eisenhower was worried he would be called a warmonger if he used military rockets for launching a satellite into orbit. He told the sci...
... able to help out Military with coordinates of countries being more precise which meant less friendly fire as well as being able to learn how to send missiles through space without a country knowing who launched that attack. It also gave way to being able to fly at high altitudes and UAV’s for military having a better view.
Ever wonder what the atmosphere consists of? What's it made out of, what type of weather patterns are there, what does a hurricane look like, or other natural phenomenon's of today's weather ? Well America, hopefully now we can! Meteorology is the study of the atmosphere and the effects it has on our weather. Climatology focuses on how atmospheric changes alter the world’s climates, aeronomy is the study of the upper parts of the atmosphere. Meteorology focuses on the lower parts of the atmosphere, primarily the troposphere, where most weather takes place. It has been released that under the supervision of NASA, President Dwight D Eisenhower and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) that they have launched a satellite called TIROS 1 out of Cape Canaveral, Florida that will observe, record, and transmit data back to headquarters. The first ever weather satellite has arrived and with much hope will change weather prediction for the future.

The Space race has impacted every aspect of our modern lives. To start with it made the American public who at the end of the war were not interested in space look at Math and Science with respect.
Let's admit it - we all want to look good before going away on holiday! Is it because we want to look great in a bikini, or that summer dress we have been waiting to wear, or even show off those guns? Maybe we want to look good for our new partner, or get a little holiday romance going? Or is it just an excuse for us binge out and forget the calorie counting, as after all.. we are on holiday!?

Ever since the beginning of time there have been stars. Not only stars in the sky, but moons, planets, and even galaxies! Astronomy is defined as the branch of science that deals with celestial objects, space, and the physical universe as a whole. In other words it is the study of space, planets, and stars. Throughout the ages, many people have used astronomy to help them learn about the universe, our own planet, and even make predictions about life itself. Understanding astronomy means understanding where it originated, the different groups/cultures that used it, and modern purposes of the science of the stars.
We have benefitted our world by using satellite technology to preform tasks and provide a range of innovated services. The main applications of satellites are in the fields of communication, Earth Remote Sensing, weather, and scientific research. In some ways the use of satellites has made our world smaller. Satellites make it possible to establish a connection between two people that are on opposite ends of the globe via a telephone call or the use of the internet. Each of these satellites have many parts, but two parts are common to all satellites are called the payload and the bus. These groups of devices make the satellite capable of accomplishing their tasks.
