Simultaneously, a woman must expend half of her salary on looking pretty since many of the cosmetic products or processes are expensive. Many of the cosmetic products tend to be expensive because the product supposed to incredible change the appearance of a woman regardless how she looks. But women use cosmetic products to keep their beauty, especially, when women are older, they have to buy different products to disappear their wrinkles or signs of age. Sara Halprin argues, “All women, as we age, must come to terms with a universal standard of youthful beauty, in a world that increasingly worships youth and denigrates age” (7). In fact, people spent around $10.5 billion on cosmetic procedures. Also, the cosmetic market is approaching $1 billion mark, and it is going to triple within the next few years (Mansfield and Crane). If a woman wants to look skinny, the liposuction, which removes fat and makes a thin waist, would cost her around $10,000. The minimum wage is $7.25, and in order to pay her surgery, she would have to work around 1,380 hours in total to achieve it without adding her personal expenses such as bills or cosmetic products. Phylis M. Mansfield, a professor in the marketing department, and John D. Crane, a market research, recorded how much people spend on cosmetic surgeries, and the amount is enormous. The market of cosmetics is gaining popularity each year despite the cost of the products and procedures. A woman would have to work many months to afford just one surgery, so she can be attractive. Eventually, because cosmetic products and procedures are expensive, women should not be pursued by society to fit the beauty
Tan includes a direct quote from her mother in paragraph six of the reading, and she does not shorten it for an important reason. Tan decides to keep the entire quote instead of paraphrasing to add an effect that a reader can only understand with the full quote. It shows that even though some people speak the language of English it is hard for others to understand based on the person’s full understanding and comprehension of the language. In Tan’s case she is used to the way her mother speaks and uses the language, but to others it is almost impossible to understand. If it were not for Tan summarizing what the quote meant before putting it in the text, few readers would have understood what the mother was trying to convey with her use of the language. Tan’s strategy in including this direct quotation is to show that language differs from person to person even if they all speak the same language. Cosmetic surgery is essentially not a bad thing. Some people suffer facial and body injuries or are born with a deformity which can only be corrected by plastic surgery. Cosmetic surgery can also be a life saver in cases of extreme obesity. However, some people-especially young females- are becoming too obsessed with their looks and body. The quest of finding the perfect body has led many to the operating table, opting for multiple cosmetic surgeries.

This paper will explore and evaluate Kathi Weeks’ thoughts on the nature of work and its many implications within a political context. In particular, it will address the following inquiries addressed by Weeks: Is work a political issue? Is reduction of the work week to 30 hours (by means of a 6 hour a day maximum) a viable alternative to the current norms and why? It could be argued that some of Weeks’ conclusions about the nature of work and it being political are viable, however it seems that her arguments in favor of the 6 hour work week are much less successful if only because it becomes convoluted and perhaps dampened due to it being wrapped in the context of feminism.
There are so many forms of propaganda that surround our lives on a every day basis, and these negative messages persuade and shape our thoughts of perfection, of who we are, and who we ought to be. The beauty industry and its’ advertisements is one type of propaganda that ultimately characterizes the way we think of ourselves. The media is relentless in reminding us every chance they get why women need to be perfect and what we need to achieve that. There is endless pressure as women to have a perfect body and appearance. The beauty industry’s aim through advertisement is to make women feel as if we need to buy the beauty products in order to look and feel like the models on television, magazines, and in commercials. The beauty industry is very successful because as women, we often feel compelled to buy whatever is necessary to look “perfect.” In years past the beauty industry has been solely focused on the obvious beauty tools such as makeup, hair accessories, lotion, etc. However, we have become more intrigued by even more aspects of the beauty world such as undergarments and everywhere in between. In other words, media propaganda is more interested in the “selling of sex” now than ever before. An unfortunate yet accurate depiction by actress Helen Mirren reads, “Flesh sells. People don’t want to see pictures of churches, they want to see naked bodies.” Just as Mirren knows this to be true, so does the beauty industry and they have taken it and ran with it.
