The perspective that success is something you work for is created by a pearson’s experiences going to college , earning things instead of things just be given to you last but not least going through challenges. Upon a time in my household we were going through a hard time . In the short story By Any Other Name by Santha Rama Rau, it converse about how the author and her sisters are from india and move and tries to blend in with the british culture. The first way that Santha Rama Rau develops Santha’s perspective of success is when she was at school on the playground with her friends . she says “ I ran about for what seemed like hours without ever catching anyone , until it was time for school to close” ( Santha Rama Rau pg. 37) This explains that Santha’s perspective is that being gallant is better than success by showing that she lets the other children win although she wins while with her mother. The second way that the author creates Santha’s perspective of success is when she and her mother plays she wins and her mother said “I had often heard her say it and it seemed reasonable time, but the results was that i had no clear idea of what “winning” is” (rau,37)This displays that Santha’s perspective of being gallant is better than success by showing that because her mother lets her win and she finds success out of that . In many short stories, characters face binding situations in their lives that make them realize more about themselves when they finally overcome such factors. These lively binding factors can result based on the instructions imposed by culture, custom, or society. They are able to over come these situations be realizing a greater potential for themselves outside of the normality of their lives. Characters find such realizations through certain hardships such as tragedy and insanity.
Everyone can pant a pretty picture of how wonderful their life may be. In fact, doing so may come with a consequences. Reading these three short stories “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson, “Shooting an Elephant” by George Orwell and a short biography by Malcolm X called “My First Conk”, set off many different emotions. I felt as these author’s wanted to me to feel in such way. I believe there is a life lesion in every life story someone has to share, no matter how small or big.

The complexities of human nature are almost immeasurable, though one thing is clear: people need societal validation and affirmation. In the short story, “By Any Other Name”, two young Indian girls, Premila and Santha, are sent to a British school in India, where conformity is forced upon them. Ostracized for their differences, Premila loses sight of her cultural identity while Santha stays steadfast in her beliefs. In Santha Rama Rau’s short story “By Any Other Name”, the author uses the protagonist’s inability to accept or even understand conformity to highlight a key theme: by rejecting the need for validation and refusing to conform, one develops a stronger sense of self.

An identity can be received in many forms. In the essay, “By Any Other Name” by Santha Ramu Rau, Rau receives a new identity, because she is given a new name. Melanie Scheller, the author of the essay “On the Meaning of Plumbing and Poverty”, tries to conceal her identity so people do not know how she grew up. If they did they would ultimately give her a new terribly identity. In the essay, “You’re Short, Besides!” by Sucheng Chan, others giver her an identity based on her appearance. In the essay, “How It Feels to Be Colored Me” by Zora Neale Hurtson, she finds her own identity within herself and embraces each aspect of it. In the essay, “The Language of Oppression” by Haig A. Bosmajian, he discusses what names and labels do to one’s identity.
Through the examination of these two texts it is evidently clear that in order for heroes to face their enemies it is vital that they first overcome personal hardships. This is true of the characters in both novels, as we examine their journey toward hero status. Whether their circumstances come from a manipulative external source or from an uncontrollable string of events, they both will undergo a similar process of development.
Life is built differently every day according to the choices we make. Every decision we make will have a result, some results might be good, other results might be bad, and even a single choice can result in death as the maximum prize.
