In April 2013, a special memorial playground opened in Sea Bright, NJ. The project, The Sandy Ground Project: Where Angels Play, was organized by New Jersey’s Firefighter’s Mutual Benevolent Association. The playground was one of twenty-six playgrounds being installed in New Jersey, New York, and Connecticut towns honoring the children and teachers killed in the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Each town that received a playground was a town directly impacted by Superstorm Sandy. This particular playground is dedicated to Anne Marie Murphy, a special education teacher, wife, mother, and hero who passed away during the horrific shooting and is located on Sea Bright Beach which was brutally devastated by Superstorm Sandy. Each area has age appropriate sized equipment to engage children from two to twelve. The playground passed all of the four categories: supervision, age appropriate design, fall surfacing, and equipment maintenance. Evaluation of the playground equipment resulted in only two “no” checkmarks due to the fact that it lacked a sign indicating the age group for the equipment and the expected behavior rules were not posted. Other than that, the newly installed playground received a “yes” checkmark in all of the other criteria. The playground was designed to allow parents to sit and watch their children with ease in an unobstructed play area. Clearly, there were separate areas for younger children with smaller slides and a separate swing set for toddlers. The structure itself was appropriately designed and did not have any areas that could be climbed on that were not intended to be climbed on. Soft sand blanketed the playground and the equipment height was within the recommended height requirements which made it safe. All footings were properly covered and no gaps, missing parts, protruding bolts, or broken equipment were seen. Therefore, this playground is deemed safe and free from potential
In article one, Tear Down the Swing Sets, Nicholas Day has given us reasons why playground designs have changed over time. One reason is child safety. Days research shows on lines 35, he has stated," But there's this sense that if you talk about it that's enough. There's this very real reluctance to get involved in anything that might at least potentially cause an injury." This example shows that playgrounds
The House of Sand and Fog exemplifies the American Dream from different angles, based on the characters portrayed in the novel. The three main characters have individual concepts of what is meant by the American Dream. Mr. Behrani is an ex-Iranian Colonel with a strong connection to his culture and family values. He wants the best for his family. Kathy is a newly separated women. She has a distant relationship with her family, but is connected by the home left in her possession by her deceased father. Lester has a much diluted sense of values, family and the American Dream. He has a sense of self fulfillment, disregarding the needs of most other people. The characters all want the American Dream, but their definition and method of obtaining the American Dream differ from one another.
Playgrounds, such as the one on the campus of Washington Elementary, often limit the development of one’s imaginative skills and as a result can negatively impact the way a child thinks about certain situations. Playgrounds do not contribute to a child’s imagination which can affect their mental
In conclusion, the author has given a common issue in our society, which is safety for children. Although the debate tends to replace all traditional equipment on children's playgrounds, it still causes us to think more about how to develop children in the perfect way. Do we need to keep children too safe? And this point is the success of the writer because his article is viable and very comprehensive to the intended audience, providing balance as well. By expressing the opposing ideas of two sides in the argument, the readers actually have the chance to give their own
People who say “Rockwell’s playground is still an adventure playground—a construction site with all the splintery edges sanded down. It’s what an adventure playground looks like in a risk-averse culture. And it promotes the kind of play we think children should be doing now: not with just their bodies, but with their minds. The Imagination Playground is a much more cognitive vision of the playground. No one would confuse it with a jungle gym.” (Day 2) This shows that children to Mr.Day should be using their heads more and playgrounds should be safer, but Commissioner of parks in New York Henry Stern has a different idea. He says “His philosophy seemed reactionary at the time, but today it’s shared by some researchers who question the value of safety-first playgrounds. Even if children do suffer fewer physical injuries — and the evidence for that is debatable — the critics say that these playgrounds may stunt emotional development, leaving children with anxieties and fears that are ultimately worse than a broken bone.” (Tierney 1) Showing that kids should be doing physical activities at parks and using their imagination somewhere else. Not only-but also David Ball says “There is no clear evidence that playground safety measures have lowered the average risk on playgrounds,” said David Ball, a professor of risk management at Middlesex University in London. He noted that the risk of some injuries, like long
In the small town of Newtown, Connecticut, Sandy Hook Elementary is the home of many students and families. Newtown, Fairfield County, Connecticut was a home of 28,000 residents about sixty miles outside of New York City. The surrounding community was impacted heavily. The massacre that dramatically shocked the families of the victims traumatized the entire nation. Citizens were left in doubt and suspicion, which is where the conspiracies are rooted. The shooting caused people around the country to come together for the security of w...
The debate on artificial turf continues to rage on. Artificial turf has been structurally designed to be a safer surface than grass and to be unaffected by weather. Have engineers succeeded in their goal? It has been said that artificial turf has different properties than grass, and when forces act upon it, artificial turf reacts differently and causes more injuries. I have played the majority of my sports on artificial turf over the last couple years. I have always wondered if the artificial turf has any effect on injuries. Obviously I want to play on the safest surface possible. Is artificial turf that surface? This paper will answer the research question: In what ways does artificial turf affect player injuries?
As you may or may not know there are many types of farming. For those farming types, there are many tillage methods used. Depending where the farm is located is how the farmer knows what method to use. The methods used are No Till, One pass, Conventional, Conservation, and chisel plow plus. Let’s start out with No Till.
Risky play is an important part of children’s play and children have shown a natural desire of outdoor risky play in the early years of ages (Brussoni, Olsen, Pike & Sleet, 2012). Risky play refers to play that allows children to feel excited and may lead to physical injury (Sandseter, 2007). In the video Adventurous play-Developing a culture of risky play, the interviewer Neville had discussed risky play with five educators. By consulting from this video, this report will provide rationales which are for creating opportunities for risky play in the child care centres, explain how to achieve the outcomes of the Early Years Learning Framework through planning for risky play. It then attempts to analyse the observational learning in Bandura’s
Included in the pools are names of all the people that died in the 9/11 attacks as well as the 6 people who were killed in the February 26, 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center. These names are inscribed on bronze parapets. In the North pool in 3 different groups are the names of the people who were visiting and working in the North tower, the crew and passengers of American Airlines Flight 11, and those killed in the 1993 bombing. Inscribed in the South pool in 6 different groups are the names of those who were working or visiting the South tower at the time, crew and passenger members of United Airlines Flights 175 and 93, along with American Airlines Flight 77, those who were visiting or working in the Pentagon, and all the first responders. Next to the first responder’s names are headings including which unit they worked in at their job. If there was more than 1 family member of the same family that perished, the parent’s names are inscribed above their children’s names. Also included in the memorial are over 400 trees. "These trees will never be identical, growing at different heights and changing leaves at different times, a physical reminder that they are living individuals." Perhaps one of the most amazing features is the “Survival Tree”. This tree survived the 9/11 attacks but was severely damaged. A seemingly normal school day in Newtown, Connecticut, who knew that it would turn into one of the most devastating days they would ever experience. About two years ago, students at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, were involved in the most devastating event of the year. According to an article by the Huffington Post, a mentally troubled man in his twenties named Adam Lanza shot 20 children and six staff members, with his mother’s weapons. His mother had apparently grown up with guns and thought it would be good to have them in their house. Prior to driving to the school, he even shot his mother, but his motive is unknown.
The first requirement for a good program for young children and any other children are the safety provided for them. Children should feel safe in their surroundings in the program that they will enter. Parents should always ask and know the safety precautions each program serves. Knowing the precaution the program does to visitors, drop off and pick ups, and around the whole facility is important. A good program should have a policy for visitors. It is also important to know that the program has a good policy for children’s drop off and pick up. To assure a secure facility to the safety of the children a program should not only be safe for them but for the whole environment.
The reason for my chosen topic is because I am interested in finding out more about all the benefits of outdoor play and how it has an impact on the child’s physical and social development. I would also like to find out more about
Silica sand is a sort of silicate mineral and largely compose of silicon dioxide (SiO2) (Liua et al., 2015). It is easily available in all parts of the world and is commonly used for the production of dams, ceramic matrix composites, bridges, construction of buildings, roads and bricks as well as in the production of refractory materials for high temperature furnaces. Some of the most important properties of silica sand are high chemical resistance, good insulation, high hardness, high temperature resistance, high wear resistance brittleness, high tensile and compressive strength (Rizlan and Mamat, 2014a).
