Sanches by Richard Dokey
In the short story "Sanches", Richard Dokey goes into great detail on the life of
Juan Sanches, a migrant farm worker. Juan Sanches has a really hard and challenging life.
He goes from witnessing one of his children be stillborn, to having his unborn son torn
from his wife's womb. As if that were not enough Juan's wife dies during the labor of his
only son, Jesus. After all of Juan's pain and suffering all that he lives for is for his son to
grow up and be a good hard working man like him, but his son becomes Americanized and
Juan Sanches becomes very depressed over his son's situation, but Juan is also depressed
because of his own situation and the life that he has led.
It is evident that Juan is depressed over his son's situation. This is evident in
many ways. Juan is depressed because his son has become exactly what he did not want.
When Sanches drives Jesus to the Flotill Cannery Jesus anxiously begins to tell his father
of how great the Cannery is. He tells him of the great aluminum buildings, the marvelous
machines, and the belts of cans that never stopped running (151). Jesus seems very
interested in the money, a feeling that Juan knows very well. When Jesus and Juan get to
the place were Jesus is going to stay he finds out that it is a cheap hotel. Jesus could tell
that his father was not pleased. In an attempt to make his father happy he said, "I will not
stay much in the room, it is only for sleep. I will be working overtime too" (151). All
Jesus had to do was look at his fathers face to know that he was displeased.
When Jesus gives his father a tour of the Cannery Juan acts very uninterested and,

very sad and depressing life. He was only happy when he was with La Belleza and that is
why at the end when he dies he is really just going home.

Self Evaluation
I found that writing this paper was really hard for me. I am not good at analyzing
stories and trying to find hidden meaning in stories.
My strengths in this paper is that I think that I gave enough evidence to support
my thesis. I gave concrete evidence.
The weaknesses in my paper are that, even though I tried to stay away from it, it
seemed impossible for me to prove my point without summarizing. Also I think the time
limit that was given was not enough. When I write a paper I need at least a week and a
half in advanced so I can do the writing process correctly. I felt to pressured to finish the
paper.
sleep. Voices roared through his head; one voice persistently asked him, “Where is Jesus? Where?” And once he woke up shouting, “The bird is Jesus! The Bird is Jesus!” (381)
Paco: Eduardo James Olmos, the eldest son of José and Maria, he grew up to be a writer and used his families journey for material.
He also talks about if his teachers did not push him to speak English he would not have learned the language as easy. He states, “ I would have felt much less afraid. I would have delayed- for long postponed?- having to learn the language of public society” (Rodriguez 4). His teachers forced him to learn the public language, but that also encouraged his family to learn too. Now knowing the public language, they speak it more fluently and regularly. Rodriguez vocalizes “ Most of all I needed to hear my mother and father speak to me in a moment of seriousness in broken-suddenly heartbreaking- English” (Rodriguez 6). He also states “ But I had no place to escape to with Spanish” (Rodriguez 22). Rodriguez feels his family no longer carries a connection with their private language and he no longer has a safe place to speak Spanish. Because Rodriguez realises this he states “No longer so close; no longer bound tight by the pleasing and the troubling knowledge of our public separateness” (Rodriguez 8). Since his family invited the public language in they have let their private language out. His family no longer has this feeling of
Junior’s father was having an affair with a Puerto Rican woman, which makes Junior realize that his father and mother’s marriage was not perfect, and his father did not care for his family as much as he cared for the Puerto Rican woman. “Rafa gave me the look and I gave it back to him; we both knew Papi had been with that Puerto Rican woman he was seeing…” (pg.23). Since the beginning, Junior knew his dad was seeing someone else other than his mom. However, he decided to stay quiet and just gave a look towards his brother because he was afraid to say anything about it. They were heading to a family party, but the dad still chose to see the Puerto Rican woman before hand. “They’ve known about this party forever” (pg.26). The father knew that this party was coming, but still went to see the Puerto Rican woman
then, As a result, He gave up on his father and began to live his life completely separated from
“I can just see that big phony bastard asking Jesus to send him more stiffs.”(p.17)
The really crazy thing though, is that Jesus always wanted to be a servant to the human race, he was the son of man, and in the biblical sense, son is a lower status than father.

The Joyful mysteries: The Annunciation (Luke 1:28), The Visitation (Luke 1:36), Jesus’ birth (Luke 2:1-20), the presentation of Jesus to the Temple (Luke 2:22-40), Finding Jesus in the Temple (Luke 2:41-52). These Mysteries evoked in my heart the good news of the most joyful event in human history, that of the Incarnation, and the awareness of God’s infinite Mercy and humility in coming to Earth as a defenseless infant.

“With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last.” (Mark 15:37) “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” (Luke 23:46) These are the last words of Jesus as recorded in the Bible. This paper looks at the events leading up to Jesus’ death on the cross as well as the controversy caused by the events.
The Gospel of Luke centralizes the components of Jesus’ divinity, humanity, and ministry which contribute to the perception of Jesus portrayed by the narrator of Luke. Jesus’ divinity is demonstrated through his healings and miracles throughout the Gospel. His humanity is represented through the infancy narrative and also at the beginning of his Passion in the Garden of Gethsemane. Finally, Jesus’ public ministry serves as the most effective and important element of his life because of the essential teachings that he speaks of that give inside evidence to the formation of the modern day church.
He self-identified as being Mexican and being the youngest, and only son, out of four children. Being the only son in a Latinx family can place added pressure on Juan especially if the family adheres to strict traditional gender roles which emphasize men’s machismo. Juan also mentioned that he worked during high school which could indicate a financial need for his family. When describing the counseling relationship Juan would say, “My counselor really cares about me, after meeting with him I see where I have been making mistakes in my thinking. I like that we are able to work together and it is not just him telling me what’s wrong with me but encouraging me to do better.” This description would outline the collaborative nature of Adlerian thereby and the importance of focusing on the whole
