The way in which Samuel Johnson is depicted in Life of Johnson by James Boswell differs in various way from other biographers of Johnson as well as other works of Johnson. In Jeffrey Meyer’s Samuel Johnson: the struggle Johnson’s relationship with women is shown differently than it was in Life of Johnson. In Life of Johnson Boswell tries to depict a very manly and masculine Johnson. Whereas in Meyer’s biography of Johnson readers are able to see a side of Johnson that isn’t as chauvinistic and is sympathetic towards women. Even though, many might see Johnson as being misogynistic in reality Johnson did support both women and one can see this if examining and inquiring deeper into Johnson’s writing and his relationship with women becomes clearer. Further, Boswell’s depiction at times might be flawed but it was strong enough to provide a lasting impression of Johnson being chauvinist when in reality he did support women in their educational and intellectual interests.
Moreover, at times even in texts other than Life of Johnson he might still seem chauvinistic, but a lot of that is also due to the time period that Johnson lived in. Eighteenth-century culture in England women really had few rights and not much value. There were no educational opportunities available, there was the presence of a marriage market, and almost everything concerning women was made to be about things that were completely superficial. In that sense, Johnson even if at times his comments might seem backhanded for that time, he was anything but chauvinistic or misogynistic contrary to Boswell’s depictions. Throughout Johnson’s writings women are constantly referred to. However, the way Boswell portrays him and how he really is and is portrayed in other works is apparent. There are many times where Boswell quotes him and Meyers has a quote and they contradictory, and that highlights the inconsistency between the different texts. Regardless, Johnson did appreciate and value women. At times he would seem to be chauvinistic but he saw the value of women and appreciated them. By pulling examples from each text it becomes more and more apparent that one can’t just pass judgment on him based off of one text. Rather Samuel Johnson is as complicated of a person as his writing and can not be summed up by just one author; but one needs to view him and his life in a more holistic way.
The English attitudes towards gender are reflected in the literacy works of Margery Kempe and Elizabeth I’s letter to Sir Walter Raleigh. In the poem, he mentions black people that were treated unfairly and how many of those people are not recognized as much. He powerfully wrote: “Names lost. To take a case in point, Emmett Till who was African-American was tortured and killed because he flirted with a white woman. Trayvon Martin was a teenager who was shot and killed just because he went to grab a bag of skittles from his pocket, which the person who shot him thought he was reaching for a weapon. The many examples that Johnson makes help show how racism and stereotypes play a major role in our society because many people are still victims of discrimination. They are automatically stereotyped into a criminal who is about to do something that is illegal. Because the Declaration of Independence is such a well-known and sacred piece, her commentary on the sexual discrimination of Jefferson’s work sparks both support and outrage. Surprisingly, both men and women agreed on her view, yet plenty of women criticized her daring ideas. Unlike Cady Stanton, who is highly educated, some females felt content with their lives and were profoundly against change. These females assumed that they were incapable of performing at the same level as males. According to Stanton, “He has withheld from her rights which are given to the most ignorant and degraded men” (273). Stanton believes that it is unfair how even the most trivial men have rights, but women do not. All women educated or not, deserve the same rights as men. Overall, Stanton’s use of the parody does a wonderful job in delivering her views on the vitality of gender equality. Stanton elaborates on Jefferson’s Declaration of Independence, but unlike Jefferson, she discusses the flaws in gender inequality. For instance, she states, “He has made her, if married, in the law, civilly dead. He has taken away from her all right in property, even to the wages she earns” (273). Although Jefferson claims in his declaration that all people have natural rights, the general population did not associate his plans for women. Stanton comments on how women 's basic rights are not fulfilled because they are not allowed ownership of property or wage. First of all, she wasn’t afraid of her idea and made sure that it wasn’t kept as a secret, she wanted her writing to be read all around the Europe. Coming out with these strange and new ideas was unheard of, but she did it in a very lady like and smart way. She states, “After considering the historic page and viewing the living world with anxious solicitude the most melancholy emotions of sorrowful indication have depressed my spirits.” She is first addressing that she is sad because the record of history has always put women as property. Throughout the Victorian era, women were expected to meet the standards set by communities and submit to the power of men. A woman’s duty was to be a partner to man, to comply with their authority and be physically submissive, even if mentally, they were unrestricted. Women who defied society’s normalities and refused to have restraints put upon them were often seen as recalcitrant and difficult by the public. In Charlotte Brontë's, Jane Eyre, Jane defies the expected role of a Victorian era woman, and shows that females do not have to comply to societal norms. Within this extended essay, the subject chosen to study and formulate a question from was English Literature, in particular the portrayal of women during the 19th and 20th centuries, where the following novels 'The Great Gatsby' written by F. Scott Fitzgerald and Jane Austen's 'Pride and Prejudice' were set in and originated the basis from. The question is as follows 'How does Jane Austen and F Scott Fitzgerald portray gender inequalities in both lower and upper class relationships particularly through love and marriage within the novels 'Pride and Prejudice' and 'The Great Gatsby' from the different era's it was written in?' This particular topic was chosen reflecting the morality and social class during the two different era's and determining whether there was change in the characteristics of women as well as men and how their behaviour was depicted through the two completely different stories, as they both reflect the same ethical principles in terms of love and marriage. The two novels were chosen in particular to view their differences as well as their similarities in terms of gender inequality through love and marriage, as the different era's it was set in gives a broader view in context about how society behaved and what each author was trying to portray through their different circumstances, bringing forward a similar message in both novels.
