In previous years, the school did not have a well respected reputation before and after the moving into the new school in 2010. The experiences at the school however was one of many pillars that helped established my foundation in becoming an effective teacher thanks to the exceptional staff of Samuel Fels who not just fostered an academic environment but fostered an emotionally supportive environment. The experience from Fels made me an underdog during my collegiate career. However, there’s a grittiness that students in Fels would leave away from. Over the semester I have done a great deal of listening, reading, reflecting, and a good bit of talking as well. I realized early on in this course that in order to look toward the future, I had to dig through the past. I began by examining myself and the looking into the history of the independent school movement. I examined my own feelings about race and privilege, the founding of Rocky Mount Academy (RMA), and spoke with Tony Shanks, RMA’s first Black student. I came to the conclusion that in order to shape the future of RMA, I must accept who I am, examine the history of the school, and proactively transform who we were into who we can become. I believe we should continue to strive to be the finest school in Rocky Mount by providing the best education to students regardless of race, religion, class, or economic status. Although I still have more to learn and more to do as an educator, I feel I have begun an important journey to help me be a part of a transformation at my school.
Throughout my high school tenure at Roncalli High, I’ve been graced with some of the best teachers around. They have taught me to have pride, passion, and courage in everything that I pursue. Roncalli is a school where excellence is our average and the students are pushed to go farther than they think they can. These specific values have stuck to my heart and I know will carry me through my collegiate years.

On Being a Teacher by Jonathan Kozol is divided into two parts. Part one is about the actual issues and the actions teachers can take. Part two covers how to organize people into a support system for teachers. Kozol advocates a more honest and successful type of teaching throughout both sections.

Mr. Fauth has encouraged me throughout my experience to try new teaching strategies with students that I have not previously thought of. Through my four years at Mercer University, my outlook on teaching, students, and the classroom has morphed into a greater understanding of what is best in the classroom. I have seen first-hand what happens when students feel like their teachers care about them. I have also seen what happens when you have parent and community involvement in the school. Develop Relationships – Throughout my classes here at Concordia, I have been taught that relationships are the key to creating successful classrooms. Many problems can be avoided and lessened by getting to know your students and showing them that you truly do care about them right from the beginning. This was demonstrated to me once again in my capstone experience. Looking back at my capstone, I wish that I would have had the opportunity to get to know these students better before coming in to teach them. Through my own experiences, and as enforced by others' opinions in the profession, I have found that teaching is one of the most rewarding careers. Not only are you placed in the position of instructing and guiding children and young adults through the life long learning process, but you are able to give back to the schools and communities which have supported your early education and experiences that opened you up to a bright future. In becoming an educator, I hope to someday share the knowledge and lend the helping, supportive hand that I was once given, allowing students to formulate their own perspectives of the multicultural society and world around them. I made the decision to come to Baylor early in 1999 while my freshman year was still in session. At first, people thought I was joking about leaving, but when I persisted in telling them, they had no choice but to accept my decision. I had spent most of my life with some of these people, while some I had known for less than a year. I didn't think about that in the beginning. At first I was excited to go, but about the time of this party, the anxiety of leaving hit me like a sledgehammer. The party was August 10th. I left for Baylor ten days later on August 20th. Those ten days were some of the most anxious of my entire life. Was I willing to give up my happy existence to step into an unknown world of doubt? Well, as you may have guessed, since I am writing this paper, I was willing to take that chance. The question of whether it was worth it or not has yet to be answered.
Teaching is a daunting task that I do not intend to take lightly. Becoming a teacher has been a dream of mine for several years. I always knew that teaching would be the career for me, especially when I began working in the school system as a substitute secretary. I loved working in the school environment; coming in contact with children everyday made me realize how much I would enjoy teaching a classroom full of students.

There are some students who do, and they are given the tools they need to make it through. The students at Baker are just happy to have someone show an interest in what they are doing. I saw it in their eyes when I gave them praise on something they did during the time I was there. That praise can carry a student along way which to me is rewarding in it self. I can only hope that the time I spent with these students can encourage at least a few to continue on the academic path and make a name for them selves later in life. These kids deserve every opportunity we can give them and I am proud to be a piece of the big picture. We can only guess how hard it is for these students, so let’s make sure we give them a safe and helping hand along the way.
