In Samuel Coleridge’s conversation poems “The Eolian Harp” and “Frost at Midnight,” he reveals and communicates his situation in terms of religious feelings, where both his poems can speak to the audience in a quiet and personal voice revealing truth in terms of everyday experiences. Both poems emphasize the importance of the natural world by presenting imagery and descriptions of the natural setting, and stating that nature itself is very closely tied with God and religion. Although Samuel Coleridge uses different plots, devices, and methods in both “The Eolian Harp” and “Frost at Midnight,” he manages to represent his religious views, the importance of nature, and the spiritual, religious, and mystical themes in both poems.
In “The Eolian Harp”, Coleridge begins with a vivid description of a quiet scene in nature, and turns inwards into the workings of his own mind. The first stanza in “The Eolian Harp” is filled with natural imagery where both Sara, his wife, and the poet sit affectionately outside their cottage looking up at the evening stars, smelling pleasant scents, and listening to the distant murmur of the sea. In his preface to "Kubla Khan," Samuel Taylor Coleridge makes the claim that his poem is a virtual recording of something given to him in a drug-induced reverie, "if that indeed can be called composition in which all the images rose up before him as things . . . without any sensation or consciousness of effort." During the 18th century, two great companions, William Wordsworth, collaborated together to create Lyrical Ballad, one of the greatest works of the Romantic period. The two major poems of Lyrical Ballad are Wordsworth’s “Lines Composed a Few Miles above Tintern Abbey” and Coleridge’s “Frost at Midnight.” Even though these two poems contain different experiences of the two speakers, upon close reading of these poems, the similarities are found in their use of language, the tone, the use of illustrative imagery to fascinate the reader’s visual sense and the message to their loved ones. In conclusion, Frost has explored different ways in which he incorporates loneliness and isolation in many of his poems. Three of Frost’s most popular poems demonstrates this act as solitude and desolation is represented and symbolized through the dark night in “Acquainted With the Night,” the objects and experiences the speaker bears in “Waiting,” and finally, the theme of abandonment and abdication in “Ghost house.” The aspect of loneliness and isolation helps enhances the main message or possibly the theme of the poems more.

Although his use of elevated language possibly narrowed the audience, that could have been his intentions due to the complexities of this philosophical poem. In the end, Coleridge’s depiction of the Mariner’s journey ultimately conveys the Christian ideal, which is to love and appreciate all creatures created by God, whether Albatross or snake.
Frost’s sentence structure is long and complicated. Many meanings of his poems are not revealed to the reader through first glance, but only after close introspection of the poem. The true meanings contained in Frost’s poems, are usually lessons on life. Frost uses symbolism of nature and incorporates that symbolism into everyday life situations. The speaker in the poems vary, in the poem “The Pasture”, Frost seems to be directly involved in the poem, where as in the poem “While in the Rose Pogonias”, he is a detached observer, viewing and talking about the world’s beauty. Subsequently, the author transfers that beauty over to the beauty of experiences that are achieved through everyday life.

It is these elements that must be analyzed to discover the hidden dark meaning within Roberts Frost’s poems. Lines that seemed simple at first become more complex after the reader analyzes the poem using elements of poetry. For example, in the poem Mending Wall it appears that Robert frost is talking about two man arguing about a wall but at a closer look the reader realizes that the poem is about the things that separate man from man, which can be viewed as destructive. In After Apple Picking, the darkness of nature is present through the man wanting sleep, which is symbolic of death.
Through alliteration and imagery, Coleridge turns the words of the poem into a system of symbols that become unfixed to the reader. Coleridge uses alliteration throughout the poem, in which the reader “hovers” between imagination and reality. As the reader moves through the poem, they feel as if they are traveling along a river, “five miles meandering with a mazy motion” (25). The words become a symbol of a slow moving river and as the reader travels along the river, they are also traveling through each stanza. This creates a scene that the viewer can turn words into symbols while in reality they are just reading text. In all three poems, Wordsworth views nature and human beings as complementary elements of a sum of a whole, recognizing that humans are a sum of nature. Therefore, looking at the world as a soothing being of which he is a part of, Wordsworth looks at nature and sees the benevolence of the divinity aspects behind them.
