Here is the report topic I have been selected to work on my final recommendation report. This report will be focusing on improving public consciousness of charitable services offered by the Salvation Army Thrift Stores to attract donors by helping them to understand the true value of donating and to increase revenue to achieve its mission. • the situation that makes this report necessary – how the problem is affecting the audience Like many other thrift stores, due to lack of awareness, The Salvation Army Thrift Stores suffer from the increasing problem of waste disposal due to unwanted donations. While most people drop off easily sellable items, some donors are treating the thrift stores like garbage dumps, which force the company to pay …show more content…
(At this point, you are not required to analyze the problem in depth nor to offer recommendations or solutions. Save those for your recommendation report). The basic problem for this current situation is less awareness of the society about the charitable services offer by the Salvation Army. Though the Salvation Army interact with the social media, it does not focus much on interacting with public relations, especially within the store. For charitable organizations, constant interaction with both media and public relations are really important in attracting donors, which ultimately enable the company to achieve its goals. Without convincing donors about the value of the company’s mission and the right use of their donations, The Salvation Army Thrift Stores having hard time getting good donations. That is the reason why people tend to donate whatever leftover after cleaning their houses just to get rid of their unwanted stuff, without concerning whether they are reusable or …show more content…
I have been working for the Salvation Army Thrift Store for more than three years. As a Sales associate, I am often interacting with thrift store shoppers and donors to help find their needs and accept donations. The most frequent question the donors and customers ask is where the store money goes. It is clear that people are not well aware of what is happening with the process of Salvation Army Thrift Stores. Most often they believe it is just a place to buy things for very cheap prices. However, customers still bargain for the lower prices without realizing that even the money goes to charity. In addition, I have noticed that some donors leave items that are not accepted unintentionally as they are not aware of what is accepted or some leave garbage intentionally as an easy way to get rid of unwanted and unusable items. Therefore, I believe communication plays a major role in enhancing the store performance and achieving its
Many people have begun to question how they use the money they raise. About 81% of their funds are put towards their programs and services, while more reputable charities are usually

The Salvation Army prides itself in continuously offering needs based programs or service to communities that fall below the poverty line. The Salvation Army has a wide array of strengths including: 1) Professional networking; a channel through which ideas, resources and services can be exchanged between Salvation Army and other non-profit organizations 2) Global notoriety; the Salvation Army is a world-wide organization, sustained primarily through government funds and public donations 3) Longevity; a demonstrated history of success. This history of longevity affords them a positive, solid reputation in participating communities (The Salvation Army USA, 2018).
This chapter also helped extend the list of charities or organizations that I would be willing to donate money to. I never wanted to donate money because I was only aware of the big companies that have commercials. I knew that most of those companies did not spend the majority of the money on the cause that they were supporting. This chapter and this book as a whole has made me more willing to donate money to different places.

Paco Underhill has created a way for stores to draw more customers in and spend more money by getting in the mind of the customers. I found some of Underhill’s theories to be true. Underhill’s theories have helped provide research of the actions of consumers inside of American Eagle, Meijer and Hollister, these theories include, the need for shoppers to acclimate to their surroundings, the way customers turn into stores, and by placing most used products in the farthest places away from the

...evant to the achievements performed by the Salvation Army. People who seek help through the Salvation Army may develop a better outlook about their lives, as well as feel a since of hope. In turn, donations and goals accomplished by and through the Salvation Army foundation give the administrators confidence that their programs are working. Social networking has allowed these organizations to have campaigns for fundraising they are associate within communities and other non-profit organizations.
We, Aimee Johnson and Jessie Virnig, along with Amy Wilson and Shawn Klimek, decided to try to give the homeless a little hope. The week before Christmas we went door to door and collected food for the local homeless shelter. We decided to focus on collecting food because around the Christmas season, a lot of emphasis is put on toy drives and people sometimes overlook the fact that the homeless still need to eat. In order to broaden our research, we decided to collect food from more than one group of people. We went to an average middle class neighborhood and to a college dormitory. Before we went out into the neighborhood and dorms, we prepared a thank you letter to give to everyone explaining to them who we were, to tell them that we were collecting food for the homeles...
Throughout this course my paradigms of what a nonprofit organization have been challenged as we have considered the major aspects and leadership challenges of these organizations. Having worked with for profit and nonprofit organizations in the past I was quite confident that I had a clear understanding of the distinctions between the two. I had worked in organizations that regularly used volunteers to accomplish their mission and felt that the management of these processes were simplistic. Despite these misconceptions, I found that I was able to learn a tremendous amount through our reading, peer interactions, group projects and equally important, my volunteer service as part of this course.
Volunteering enables a person to develop new skills that he or she would otherwise not have been able to develop. Unlike most other organizations, a charitable organization is happy to give positions to passionate, though inexperienced, individuals who desire to help others and benefit the community. Therefore, an individual with little experience in a field of work can gain meaningful skills that he or she can use in the future. For example, while I volunteered at the hospital this summer, I learned about the daily work lives and professional duties of doctors and nurses. Had I not volunteered, I would not have learned about these things. I was always interested in the medical field, but volunteering at the hospital let me explore my interests and en...
Goodwill is an intangible asset, probably the most intangible of all intangible assets, hard to measure and even more difficult to account for. Goodwill today constitutes a much larger part of acquisition prices than it did previously, resulting in a much greater impact on financial statements.
Book/ Article Review Report The article I read was “Is for profit the future of non-profit?” by Amy Schiller. By introducing Bush Lauren’s FEED project, a for-profit company that donates a portion of each bag sale to fight hunger and to feed children in the most deprived area, Amy emphasized the trend of marketized philanthropy and Philanthrocapitalism. Combining daily shopping experience with significant problems in the world, it became more and more pervasive that company establishes businesses that have social mission integrated directly with their products. The relationship between the customer and corporation became similar to the relationship between donor and nonprofit sector, and, according to Amy, this change demonstrated how traditional
It is certain that people are getting more used to wasting products that are still reliable to use and, especially in fashion, not that many people are aware of the concept of sustainability. Although concept of recycling paper, plastic and glass has now spread a cross the states, people still doesn’t know how to recycle or reuse their clothing. “65 pounds of clothing and textiles a year are improperly discarded and only an eight of that goes to charities for reuse [1].” This indicates how unaware people are when it comes to taking care of their garments. Or rather, the way in which fast fashion industry promotes the value of cloth is very low, and it is because the fashion industry wants people to get rid of their clothing as soon as possible in order to sell their new colle...
We always make sure that when they come to our stores they experience the best shopping and that they find what they want to buy and we have a reason for them to buy. We make sure that our merchandising is up to standards and it motivates the customers to shop in our stores.
