Saint Francis Xavier, a Spanish Roman Catholic missionary, was born on April 7, 1506 near present-day Sanguesa, Spain and died on December 3, 1552 in Sancian Island, China. Saint Francis Xavier is known to be one of the greatest Roman Catholic missionary in the Catholic Church for his accomplishments in Asia. One of the seven founders of the Society of Jesus and was named the patron of all foreign missions. Later, the group of friends traveled to Rome and participated in a conference to propose that led to the formal founding of the Society of Jesus. During their time in Italy, they have become popular as many people come for their services. One of the people, King John the third of Portugal, requested them to evangelize the people in the European controlled Asian countries. Since Ignatius at that time fell ill upon the time of the request, he sent Francis to do it. On April 7, 1541, Francis disembarked for Goa, India. From village to village, Francis traveled around to help the people of India confirm in their Christian faith, since the Indians only baptize themselves to avoid conflicts with the Portuguese. In addition, he cared for the sick in hospitals, read the word of God to children on the streets and established missions in the country. Francis struggles in India due to the language barrier for spoken communication, persecution of Christians and the ignorance of people, but overcame it due to his good nature and his strong faith in God. He was successful in India and had converted thousands of people. He later moved on to Malacca, Malaysia and to other islands south of Malaysia to continue converting people and founded more missions. Francis returned to Goa afterwards and met up with the other Jesuits missionaries that had arrived. Before Philippe Petit walked the high wire between the Twin Towers in 1974, people weren’t certain how they felt about the construction of the World Trade Center. After Philippe performed, people began to warm up to the idea of the towers. Philippe Petit walked the high wire between the Twin Towers on August 7, 1974. This event prompted Andrew McMahon to write the song “Platform Fire” about this event for his band, Jack’s Mannequin. This song was not a hit for the band; however, fans of Jack’s Mannequin seem to have a special place in their heart for it.

St. Teresa was born in Avila, Spain on March 28, 1515. She was baptized as Teresa Sanchez de Cepeda y Ahumada. At a young age she would often give gifts to the poor and pray. Her father and her mother were both Catholics which inspired her to do the same. Her father was a very strict man a demanded her to never lie, while her mother told her to lie and comforted her. This created a ton of turmoil in the family and made St. Teresa end up loving her mother more due to her father’s severe strictness. St. Teresa felt that everything she was doing was wrong. During her teens her mother passed away leaving her to deal with her father by herself and she was relieved of some of the pain by turning to the Virgin Mary for comfort. In her late teen years
St. Isaac Jogues began his work of faith by joining the Society of Jesus in 1624. As a Jesuit, he became a professor of literature during this time and taught at Rouen before being ordained as priest and sent on mission work in 1636 in Canada. He is known for his work as one of the most remarkable missionaries among the Huron, Iroquois and other natives of North America. He is as well known to be the first priest of the Catholic Church to enter Manhattan Island (Greer , 2000).

Francis Drake, born around 1540 in England, was sailing to sell his captives but was attacked and came back with only two ships and a need for revenge (Perry 293). Drake decided that he should work with the queen on taking land and sea control from Spain to fulfil his goal Perry 293). In 1572, Drake took 30 tons of silver from Nombre de Dios, and in 1577 he attacked the Spanish in Chile and Perry while, circumnavigating the earth (Perry 293). During this trip, he collected spices in the Philippines and claimed land for the queen which he called New Albion, San Francisco (“Francis Drake”). Saint Francis of Assisi was an Italian monk who founded the monastic order of the Franciscans. He was from a wealthy family and spent most of his youth carousing the streets of Assisi with other young nobles. After fighting in the war between Assisi and Perugia, he contracted an illness and had his first mystical experience. After he was healed, Francis had another mystical experience while praying in a neglected church: “After a period of prayer and meditation, Francis heard the voice of Jesus coming from a nearby crucifix: ‘Francis go, repair my house, which, as you see, is falling completely to ruin’.” It was this call that inspired Francis to leave Assisi, determined to live more simply with his fellow monks.
Saint Catherine was born in Siena, Italy on March 25, 1347. She was one of twenty-five children, and she had a twin but she died when she was just an infant. Her father, Giacomo di Benincasa, was a cloth dyer and her mother, Lapa Piagenti, was the daughter of a poet. Catherine grew up being a very happy child. It is reported that when she was around 6, she she had a vision of God. When she was 7, she vowed to give her whole life to God.
Francis was famous for his love of all creation. He called for simplicity of life, poverty, and humility before God. He worked to care for the poor. Thousands were drawn to his sincerity, piety, and joy. In all his actions, Francis sought to follow fully and literally the way of life demonstrated by Christ in the Gospels. He died in 1226, at the age of 44.
Saint Francis of Assisi was a uniquely spiritual man who gave up a life of wealth and position to lead a life of poverty in accordance and service to God. Embracing a life according to the Gospels, Francis went on to establish a Monastic Order, known as the Franciscans. In the midst of the political climate within the religious community of Italy, Francis emerged a champion for the poor and sick, with humility and no regard for himself. Francis exhibited his love for God through his love and admiration for all of God's creation including nature. (Pavur, 217) His name was not originally Ignatius; at birth he was named Inigo of Loyola, until he changed it to Ignatius later in life. (Pollen, St. Ignatius) He later decided to become a soldier in the Spanish army and was fighting in the battle of Pamplona; the French were invading the Spanish castle there.
