I have chosen Saint Cathrine of Alexandria for my Confirmation Saint. Catherine of Alexadria is my choice because she loved God with all her heart and soul. She was known for her beauty, brains, and nobel birth. I can relate to Catherine because as I go through process of confirmation to accept God. We share the same age and love for God. She was brave at a young age and was confident enough to stand up for her beliefs, and was committed to God. Saint Catherine's originally had the name of Dorothea which means to be pure, clean, and uncontained nature. But while becoming a Christian her name was later changed to Aikaterina. Saint Catherine of Alexandria was known for being born into a noble birth. She was the daughter of Constus the governor of Alexandria. Since a young age, she devoted her time to studying and learning. She had a vision one day around the age of fourteen. She visioned a child persuading her to become a Christian. When Maxentius the emperor of her time started to persecute, she went to the emperor asked to reproach for his cruelty. Then the emperor gave her fifty of his best pagan philosophers and preachers to debate with her. Hoping it would change her mind on pro- Christianity. But, Catherine won the debate! Catherine was also known to be one of the most beloved saints in the middle ages, and considered one of the most important virgin martyr's. Her body was discovered around the year 800 at Mount Sinai "with hair still growing and a constant stream of healing oil issuing from her body." (St. Catherine of Alexandria) Saint Catherine of Alexandria's symbol is the spiked wheel, also known as the Catherine wheel. Her feast day is celebrated on the 25 of November. She belongs to one of the fourteen helpers which are a group of saints prayed to help with health and curing diseases. She is also the patron saint of over 40 jobs and cities. She is mainly the patron saint of philosophers and
Saint Christopher is my favorite saint for a multitude of reasons. Let's just get the easy one out of the way which is that both he and I share the same name. With that aside, Saint Christopher is also my favorite saint as he is the patron saint of transportation and travel. My family and I enjoy traveling and exploring and before every trip, I say a short prayer to Saint Christopher , and not once has our family gotten into any major issues traveling. The biggest reason Saint Christopher is my favorite saint is that I admire his eagerness to serve others. Before helping to carry people across the river, Saint Christopher searched for who he though was the most powerful person in the world, so that he could serve them. And after that event with the Christ-Child at the river, Saint Christopher was said to of gone to a town in Asia Minor called Lycia, where he ministered to the Christian population there until he was beheaded in the year 251. Regardless of whether his story is true or not, and whether he even existed, Saint Christopher is a good model to look up
Saint Christina of Markyate’s story provides more than the religious experiences of a hermit, it presents twelfth-century life in, mostly, the Huntington area of England in a very detailed manner. Baptized as Theodora, Christina of Markyate’s path of religious devotion is claimed to have begun in her early teen years with a vow of chastity (35). This vow was only known to one other person, a close friend named Sueno, until her parents attempted to arrange a marriage for her. Being described as attractive and intelligent, as well as coming from a wealthy family, this was not uncommon for women in Christina’s lifetime. Upon declining the first suitor, a bishop, her hardships begin and, at times, seem as though they were both unlikely to end and
To me, confirmation is about continuing my faith journey, not completing it. I believe that St. Perpetua’s illustration of love, friendship, loyalty, faith, and bravery can assist me in this important sacrament. By following her example, I may become a more faithful, a more loving, and a fairer catholic. She lived out the last days of her life braver than most can hope to live out in a lifetime, and it was all in the name of God. St. Perpetua was, and continues to be, a prime example of how every Christian should strive to love and serve God.
Teresa de Ahumada y Cepeda, Saint Teresa's complete name, was born in Avila, Castile, Spain on March 28, 1515. Her father, Don Alonso Sanchez de Cepeda, had remarried to his second wife, Dona Beatriz de Ahumada, and Teresa was the third of their nine children. Her father, being a Jewish converso and a highly respected man in Avila, was excluded from many offices in State and religious orders in Spain because of his racial purity. The family though, was large and wealthy in Avila and had no major problems.
Catherine of Siena. The Dialogue of the Divine Providence . Trans. Algar Thorold. 1907. 25 Feb. 2004 .
At the age of fourteen, Catherine had a vision of Mary and baby Jesus. After this vision, she converted to the Christian faith and devoted her life to converting others. Catherine was a very smart young girl and her intelligence is
101) Believing in or seeing saints and angels is a practice of Christianity. Continuing, Joan of Arc claimed these saints to be significant French saints through the Christian church, in which she voluntarily and punctually attended. The three saints were identified to be Saint Michael, Saint Catherine, and Saint Margaret. As claimed in the text, The Trial of Joan of Arc, by Daniel Hobbins, these saints had told Joan of Arc “that she was to bring about the deliverance of Orleans from an English siege,” (The Trial of Joan of Arc, pg. 2) and that she needed the help of King Charles VII to do so. This is what initiated Joan of Arc’s experience with a “series of further victories” (The Trial of Joan of Arc, pg. 2), such as the Battle of Orleans, that were all in the name of God, in which reflected on popular piety. Foreshadowing to her trial, during Joan
The Catholic Church has had a vast variety of prophets, apostles, and followers who preach the words of Jesus Christ, but a rare few can claim to have had the impact that Saint Peter, Saint Paul, and The Council of Jerusalem had. These two men and this council broke the Catholic Church out of Jewish Tradition and into the mainstream land with the goal of reaching all people no matter what cultural differences they may have; all were welcome thus forming the foreground of the Catholic Church. Saint Paul; who came from a background of hatred toward the Church experienced a conversion into Christ, this serves as an example for all citizens of this Earth. Saint Peter, who held authority with the apostles and who was forgiven by Jesus after he denied him serves as modern day examples of our Church leaders, most notably the Pope. Saint Peter, Saint Paul, and The Council of Jerusalem impacted the early Church by offering a unique experience in faith and life that welcomed
The Holy Virgins in Rome heard that Sophia and her daughters were being taken to the Emperor so they all started praying for them to be strong and to keep their faith. Everyone around could not believe how strong and not scared they all looked when they went in front of the Emperor.
St. Maria Goretti was an amazing woman and faithful follower of Jesus Christ. Maria had a tough and short life, facing many struggles. Through it all she showed her faith and strength. Knowing God would always be with her, she was always peaceful. Also, she was one of the youngest canonized saints in all of the Catholic Church. I believe all young people can look up to Maria, and have great respect for her.
I chose St. Catherine of Alexandria because she is an amazing role model. She taught her faith in times of great peril to herself and kept on teaching until she died. She even used the power of God and showed everyone that God is watching over her and taking care of her and everyone around her by breaking the wheel as soon as she touched it. She is also a martyr and changed many people’s lives during her time on earth. Thousands of people were converted and inspired by her, but sadly many of them were persecuted. I can be like her by trying to spread my faith in any way I can, at any time I
What a sensation was made about the Sensation exhibition in the Brooklyn Museum of Art. The focus of Mayor Giuliani’s outcry was the piece “The Holy Virgin Mary” by Chris Ofili. Funny, he didn’t give attention to some of the other outrageous works including the pubescent female mannequins studded with erect penises, vaginas, and anuses, fused together in various postures of sexual coupling, or the portrait of a child molester and murder made from what appears like child hand prints or bisected animals in plexiglass tanks full of formaldehyde. Would it ever have made headlines with a different title, like “Afro-lady”? I don’t think so. I guess targeting religion gets a little too personal. Giuliani said, “You don’t have the right to government subsidy for desecrating somebody else’s religion. If you are a government-subsidized enterprise, then you can’t do things that desecrate the most personal and deeply held views of people in society.” You would think that the government paid these artists, right? It turns out that the show consisted of Charles Saatchi’s privately owned collection VIEWED in a public museum. So what does that mean to you? Well, when I found out that tidbit of information, it didn’t seem so offensive anymore. Taxpayers didn’t pay these young British artists to create controversial pieces. Taxpayers fund the museum itself to stay open. Museums have a variety of exhibitions all year. What is wrong with having one displaying a private collection? This is a common thing with museums. Otherwise, how would the public ever get to view extensive artistic compilations of the wealthy? Some collections are beautiful, others perturbing. But, who draws this line? Who gets to decide? The individual. If you do not want to submit your eyes to horrendous, offensive creations, then don’t!
A Saint is a person of great holiness and virtue which was exactly who Saint Bernadette de lourdes was. her full name is Marie-Bernadette Soubirous and she was born in Lourdes, France on January 7th, 1879 and lived until the age of 35. Saint Bernadette was the eldest of six children of a rather poor family but despite the harsh living conditions that surrounded Bernadette her faith remained strong for she kept in mind that her sufferings were nothing compared to what our Lord Jesus Christ had to do for us, “Why must we suffer? Because here below pure love cannot exist without suffering. O Jesus, Jesus I no longer feel my cross when I think of yours”. St. Bernadette was known as the Lady of great faith for her admiration of the Blessed Virgin Mary was astonishing, for she had been receiving several vision of our blessed mother.
"Holiness consists simply in doing God's will and being just what God wants us to be." This quote is from Saint Therese of Lisieux, the little flower of Jesus. She loved flowers and saw herself as a beautiful flower in God's garden. She was a novice Carmelite Nun who completely devoted herself to God, giving her the title of Little Flower. Although she was faithfully devote, she never performed great miracles of mighty deeds. She instead offered up small sacrifices to God when in times of hardship. I chose St. Therese because of her beginnings, life of holiness and devotion to God until the very end.
She is the patron of nurses and can be helpful when you pray to her. For example, a month ago I fractured my ankle and the doctor said I would be out for around six weeks. I prayed for her to help the pain and swelling go away. Also, I prayed to Saint Catherine, to not be out for the full six weeks, so I could go back to cheer and not miss any important national competitions. Besides being helpful she is inspiring to me, of her abilities to resist temptations and her devotion to God. One time my dad told me to only have water because it was late at night. However, I had been desperately craving iced tea all day and thought I “had” to have it. So I opened the door and took out the iced tea, but before I poured it in, I thought about my decision. I remembered how my saint was able to pray to God to help her resist her temptations. Therefore, I placed the iced tea back in the fridge and accepted water instead like my dad suggested. As a result of having thoughts to disobey my dad, I prayed to God like Catherine did for help. Saint Catherine lived a life dedicated to God in the real world (reality). It is encouraging to me that she was able to live a life fully devoted to God and not have any distractions, doubts, or fears holding her
