Safety is arguably one of the most crucial aspects involved in any form of health care. I would argue that in term seven, safety is one of the most crucial learning skills to implement into practice. Safety prevents disease, mitigates current and future problems as well as, protects the patient and the individual of the healthcare team. Safety in healthcare is an understanding to do no harm, and protect patients at all times. Additionally, the understanding of the concept of safety and safe practice connotes the process of delegation. Delegation in the nursing profession is described as, a “transfer accountability to a qualified team member to safely perform a specific task or activity” (“Delegation in nursing”, 2023). Being able to reinforce the knowledge I learn and practice in simulations in my hospital clinicals has drastically grown my professional identity and confidence. Looking back on the situation where I assessed a patient who was intubated with low oxygenation, I can look into the American Nurses Association (ANA) code of ethics. This code of ethics is almost the “bylaws” of nursing and is what one can reference to understand the purpose of a nurse. The five provisions state, “The nurse owes the same duties to self as to others, including the responsibility to promote health and safety, preserve wholeness of character and integrity, maintain competence, and continue personal and professional growth” (Code of ethics, 2015). Looking back at my actions, I see how I promoted the health and safety of this patient because of what I have learned. Nursing is not an easy profession by any means and addressing Furthermore, I have evaluated my ethical responsibility in many clinical situations with patient care. Understanding that ethical nursing promotes quality care by looking past the job and understanding the human, the life, that you are caring for (“Why ethics in nursing matters,” 2023). Ethics in nursing promotes client autonomy, good actions, fairness and equality, as well as the minimization of harm (“Why ethics in nursing matters,” 2023). Having an understanding of these four attributes and relating them back to the provisions included with the ANA’s code of ethics greatly impacts my “why” of choosing nursing as a profession and is something I think about every time I walk into the hospital. Acknowledging all that I have learned throughout this term, I've been able to determine what works for me and what I have learned about myself as a whole, professionally.
