Love is not a word that anybody can just throw around and say it without actually meaning it. In the story “The Gift Of The Magi” by O. Henry he talked about the sacrifices the two characters made for eachother and their happiness for each other was all that mattered. The story also expressed what love may truley of ment between two people.

When you put someone else 's happiness before your self, then that 's the truest type of love that anybody can ask for. In the book “The Gift Of The Of Magi’, Della makes a huge sacrifice by cutting her hair off, and wasn 't so sure in about doing it because she didn 't know icv if jim was still going to love her for having short hair and not seeing the women he was used to seeing all the time. Jim also sacrificed the watch that has been in his family presence for years just buy della some combs she really liked. Having somebody do that for another person does have special meaning to it between the two that are involved. The reason being is because Della was willing to give up something that she really enjoyed just to get jim a Christmas present, and jim did as well he gave up something for the women he loved to make happy and make sure she had something on Christmas day to cherish, but all they really needed was each other and their full commitment and love for one
First of all the question rises what is love. Love is having a sense of security in someone. When we love someone we usually mean that we can turn to that person comfortably if all other doors of the world are shut to us. This is the one person that we trust and like to be in company with. In the novel Cyrano de Bergerac, Cyrano loves Roxane more than anyone else but he is shy to tell her so. When he finds out of her feelings towards another character Christian, who she likes because of his looks, Cyrano finds a way to express his love to Roxane. He decides that he would write to her in the name of Christian who comparatively is a poor writer and "wishes to make Christian his interpreter"(II,85).
It has often been said that what we value is determined only by what we sacrifice. The novel A Thousand Splendid Suns, by Khaled Hosseini, includes one specific character who makes a sacrifice that demonstrates what she truly values in life. Mariam, a major character in the book, sacrifices her life in order to save Laila and her children. This sacrifice allows the reader to view what Mariam truly cares about: the survival of Laila, her happiness, and her children. Mariam’s sacrifice highlights her willingness to do whatever it takes to save the ones she loves, allowing for a deeper understanding of Mariam and how sacrifice is a major theme in the novel.
Love: a small, four-lettered word that oozes with possibility. What is the meaning of love? The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines love as “a feeling of strong or constant affection for a person.” However, can love really be defined? In the short story “What We Talk About When We Talk About Love,” by Raymond Carver, the four main characters discuss just that: what is love?
The Canterbury Tales, written by Geoffrey Chaucer around 1386, is a collection of tale told by pilgrims on a religious pilgrimage. Two of these tales, "The Knight's Tale" and "The Wife of Bath's Tale", involve different kinds of love and different love relationships. Some of the loves are based on nobility, some are forced, and some are based on mutual respect for each partner. My idea of love is one that combines aspects from each of the tales told in The Canterbury Tales.
Literature throughout history and all around the world frequently manifests sacrifices as the highlights of love. In the French novel Manon Lescaut, Abbé Prévost 's Des Grieux, the protagonist, becomes a thief and murderer for Manon--a girl who values luxury over love. Des Grieux sacrifices moral principles, innocence, and pursuits of becoming a theologian for his love. However, he does not regret making these sacrifices; in his eyes, being with Manon is worth losing everything. In many stories like this one, one idea is constant: love takes great sacrifice, which may lead to dire tragedies. This idea is explored in depth in William Shakespeare’s tragic play Romeo and Juliet, where the title characters are doomed ¨star-crossed lovers¨ from
Love is a powerful emotion that affects everyone at some time in their lives. According to Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary, love is defined as a feeling of strong and constant affection for someone(1). Love can refer to the feelings between a couple in a romantic relationship, or it can refer to the affection one would have with a friend. When love is shown, each person cares about the other. Sometimes, love can be hypnotizing, causing one to do something they would not do normally. In “Gift of Magi” by O Henry and “The Tell-Tale Heart” by Edgar Allen Poe, it shows that love can make one do crazy things.
“Happiness is feeling connected, free, and capable” (Myers, 2013). That is just one way that love can be explained. Love makes people feel a connection to those around them, and gives them a sense of belonging. Although many people think of love in terms of romantic relationships, and marriage, love plays a much greater role in everyday life than simply finding a companion to spend the rest of your life with. Love is also an important aspect in the relationships that we build with friends, family, and even our pets.
Many critics agree, “The Gift of the Magi” is, in all respects, an amazing and one of a kind story. One critic says, “Ironically, Fagin arrives at something utterly crucial to the success of 'The Gift of the Magi': that it has everything—an absorbing (if short) narrative drive and a twist ending that makes it wholly original” (Korb). Even renowned critic, Rena Korb, agrees; O.Henry did an excellent job with this story. Though O. Henry wrote many great stories, one of his most famous, and favorite, stories of all time is “The Gift of the Magi.” “The gift of the Magi” is a classic about a couple who sacrifices their happiness for the other. It is one of Henry’s most popular stories by far; even being remade many times. Such a popular story must have a powerful base with which to explain its message. That message is incorporated quite well into a few major themes; though, many different themes were used in this story. These themes ranged from materialism, generosity and love to more subtle undertones like selflessness and poverty. Of course, the most prominent is materialism; though, Henry goes to great lengths to show such a complex theme to his audience. He uses excellent literary devices like setting, conflict, creative syntax, and even figurative language all to his advantage. O. Henry uses many different, complex, literary elements to portray these different themes in “The Gift of the Magi.”
Love is said to be one of the most desired things in life. People long for it, search for it, and crave it. It can come in the form of partners, friends, or just simply family. To some, love is something of a necessity in life, where some would rather turn a cold shoulder to it. Love can be the mixture of passion, need, lust, loyalty, and blood. Love can be extraordinary and breathtaking. Love being held so high can also be dangerous. Love can drive people to numerous mad things with it dangerously so full of craze and passion.
No truer words have ever been spoken when it comes to relationships between man and woman. For when a man and a woman come together for a relationship it should be for the right reason, and that reason is love. Love is much more than just a word though, it is a feeling and emotion that cannot be duplicated, imitated, or simulated. Love is, as described in "If Thou Must Love Me, Let it be for Naught", "To His Lady", and "The Taxi", the emotions of joy, happiness, caring, passion, commitment, pleasure, and even pain all rolled into one, which is shared between two people.
Love has been expressed since the beginning of time; since Adam and Eve. Each culture expresses its love in its own special way. Though out history, though, it’s aspect has always been the same. Love has been a major characteristic of literature also. One of the most famous works in literary history is, Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. This story deals with the love of a man and a woman who’s families have been sworn enemies. There love surpassed the hatred in which the families endured for generations. In the end they both ended up killing their selves, for one could not live without the other. This story is a perfect example of true love.
To better understand the concept of "love", lets define the value of love. Love is the most valuable commodity in the world. We all need love just like a fish needs water. Without love, life would not be worth living. With love in our lives, we are empowered beyond belief.
Love is a universal feeling. No one has never felt love and everyone has endured sacrifices of their own. Love always has sacrifices and are required if you love someone or something. There are many sacrifices that can show affection and care that have positive externalities such as, giving up luxuries, personal goals or even physical sacrifices.
Love is an assortment of emotions, states, and dispositions that range from interpersonal affections. It can also be a virtue representing human graciousness, sympathy, and friendship. Among all types of love, family love is undoubtedly the most important. In the novel, although the concept of love and caring are expressed indirectly through one’s thoughts and actions, it can easily be noticed.
Great feelings like partnership, remembrance, and parenthood can accompany love, but feelings like heartbreak, torment, and grief can also accompany love. “A strong affection for another” is not an all-encompassing definition for love. Love is happiness and fairytales but is also pain and sadness. No dictionary could truly define human emotion, as words are to simple to convey the overlapping complexity of the feelings we experience. Love is what builds us up and what breaks us down, but most importantly, it is what makes us
