Describe an experience that you’ve had that motivates you to want to study in a STEM field. One experience that I’ve had that motivates me to study in a STEM field was attending Camp 4 my senior year. During the time I spent on campus at Kenyon, I absolutely loved attending Dr. McFarlane’s behavioral neuroscience class. He had a way of interacting with the students that made the material really come alive. I began to realize how important science was to our history and our future development as a society. At one point in the class, we dissected sheep brains. I found this immensely fascinating because discussing the anatomy of the brain in class in interesting, but holding an actual brain in my hand as I located different parts was something …show more content…
This major appeals to me for several reasons. The biggest appeal to me is that the field of neuroscience is still developing. Many of the biggest breakthroughs in the field have come within the last few decades. This means that there is so much more to be discovered and there is a large possibility to contribute to the field early in my career or even during my undergraduate years. Another reason this appeals to me is that this field is personal to me. My father has suffered from mental illness in recent years and that has motivated me to work towards a career where I would be able to help others who may be suffering with similar issues. I have always wanted to go into a career where I would be able to have a direct and positive impact on other people’s lives, and studying neuroscience is to me a gateway to that future. Another major I am interested in is biology. I hope to eventually become a neurologist. This means that I would have to attend medical school after my undergraduate studies. Because of this reason, I believe that studying biology would give me a broad base to build a career in medicine on. I actually hope to double major in both neuroscience and biology in college. Through studying science, I aim to help others in my professional life and make the world a better place for
The career path that I want to pursue is in the medical field. I major in psychology and minor in biology because going to medical school has always been my desire. Being a pediatrician is my goal I wish to conquer. I am beyond interested and passionate about this career. It is not just a career, it is my life dreams. I want to be able to enjoy going to work every day knowing I love my job and I am here because I want to. Being a pediatrician I am able to work with children and many people of different cultures. I am thrilled to know that I will be capable of caring for sick children.
"If we recognize our talents, use them appropriately, and choose a field that uses those talents, we will rise to the top of our field," Dr. Ben Carson. If accepted into Cornell University, I would pursue a major in Biological Sciences. Aside from the impact of this major on our societal and collective evolution, I am inspired by the utility of the discipline. It is through the knowledge and application of biological sciences that we can achieve what was previously only dreamed of. Fascinated with biological science; fixated with medical mysteries, revolutionary medical discoveries, and the urge to make sense of the unknown is why I am pursuing this field of study. The application of biological sciences can be used to meet an objective or solve a problem; this and my innate sense of empathy towards the many adversities and wonders of life, amplifies my yearning to help others through the use of medicine.
I would like to thank Salish Kootenai College for giving me the wonderful opportunity of applying for STEM academy. If somebody had told me that I would be applying for college classes as a sophomore, I would not have believed them. My parents have always told me that when an opportunity comes, you should take it, and I do not plan on letting this experience go to waste. Education has been a big part of my life, and this academy can only help me move forward. That being said, here are a few reasons why I should be considered a candidate for the STEM academy. Joining the STEM academy will allow me to further my knowledge and help me to get closer to my goals, my academic career would flourish, and I would be closer to my ambition for my future. I am determined to become the best and most educated version of myself that I can possibly be.
My plan for after high school is to major in a science related to the medical field, most likely something that relates neuroscience with genetic studies, like neurobiology. I also hope to take the pre-medical classes required for me to enroll in medical school, which is my current goal for after undergraduate college.
I want to be a nurse, specifically a nurse practitioner. I have always been fascinated with the medical field and see a bright future in it for me. I have the opportunity of meeting new people every day with a variety of personalities. There is always something new to discover in this field. A nurse practitioner's job is to be able to diagnose and treat illnesses. They also prescribe medicine and run physical exams. I am highly interested in pursuing the career of a nurse practitioner because the healthcare field is always in need for medical professionals, it pays well, and I am helping people at the same time.
In the degree that I am seeking I know there will be a lot of science to take. Science has always come natural to me, possibly because you can actually see the product and touch it. I plan to become a veterinarian not just for the love of animals but for the science and knowledge also. The dissecting of animals has always been interesting to me. It is a whole new world that I can wait to explore even more. It is amazing how God made living creatures. I just want to help keep them form getting sick and doctoring them when they do.
Few years back when a life changing event took place and I moved here I never thought that I will go through these many obstacles in order to live my dream. My commitment to Psychiatry has a long history, I started seeing myself as a successful physician when I was in 3rd year of my medical school and my niece was diagnosed with epilepsy following birth asphyxia, it was not only a traumatic moment for me but the whole family went into shock and severe depression. My sister-in-law even consulted a Psychiatrist. Coping with this situation on a daily basis was not easy and me being attached to her so much, had my goal of life directed toward helping my family. With the passage of time I got Involved in this field more and more. So, instead of focusing on a basic science subjects like many of my pre-med colleagues, my personal experience dragged me towards this field of medicine. After going through that difficult situation, I have realized that nothing is possible with a stressed
Basic Biology was something that I always wanted to complete. It would provide me a better understanding of whatever my family doctor says whenever I go to see him for a check up and how certain foods affect my body.
With admittance to Indiana University I would be apt to pursue a degree in Neuroscience. This degree plan would fully prepare me for focusing my attention on admittance to graduate school to become a Psychiatrist. With a degree from such a prestigious medical school I would possess the knowledge and experience necessary to achieve this aspiration.
In my life, I have been fortunate enough to have been given multiple chances on numerous occasions to participate in events and activities that have brought me out of my comfort zone. While not all of them coerced me on the path towards my future, they were useful to understand what other people may be encounter on a regular basis. One of my first opportunities that began to shape my future was when I went to a STEM camp when I was 9 years old. At the summer camp, we learned about some of the different programs they have at Miami Valley Career Technology Center, and we did some basic introductory projects so that we could see what happens in each class. The variety of the projects and unique experiences of each individual project began to expand my view
Whenever asked what my favourite subject is, Biology has been, and will always be, my only answer. It was bewildering to compare my body to a machine working harmoniously. The digestive system, the respiratory system and the circulatory system are coordinating with each other right underneath my skin. Realising that the 'blue lines' visible beneath the flesh of my hands are actually veins carrying deoxygenated blood fueled my desire to know more about how my body functions. To me, it has always been about getting to know my self better.
Post-undergraduate I intend on applying to the University of Alabama at Birmingham's medical school. Research has always been an interest of mine. I am passionate about medicine, pathology, neurology, and psychology. I am highly interested in the Neuroscience areas of neuropathology, neurophysiology, neuropsychology, cognitive, behavioral, and clinical neuroscience. My interest in biology and neural sciences was piqued throughout my academic and clinical application of studying EMS.
Ever since I was a little girl I have been interested in science; at the age of three I wanted to be a veterinarian, when I turned seven I wanted to be a surgeon, and now, I honestly have no clue what type of expert I want to be, but I know for sure that I want biology to play a huge role in my future. I find that learning biology gives a concrete explanation to topics that may be difficult to understand. Also, it is just such an interesting topic; for my AP Biology class I would study three or four hours for a ten-point quiz because I would be reading about a topic and get so lost in the details and I kept wanting to learn more, so I would lose track of time. So for Carnegie Mellon and the Mellon College of Science to be a possibility for me is amazing. I am applying to the Mellon College of Science because of its rigorous curriculum and its many research opportunities.
With being a freshman, there is a degree of uncertainty with my career goals, and this program may help me to refine my interests. However, I do know that studying/dealing with the human body (specifically the brain) is something I want to do with my life. Now I just need to figure out the means by which I want to achieve that career
This next reason might be my most important one, woman empowerment. When more women join stem they can be empowered and be role models for younger girls. The text “Why we Need Woman in STEM”, tells how when women join stem they become role models for younger girls. Women have to face a lo of gender bias and joining stem would be a great way t fight it. This is what the text “Why its Crucial to Get More Women into Science” talks about.
