At the beginning of the year I knew that I wanted to be successful in college. The problem was that I did not know what being successful meant to me. I knew that I wanted good grades and to get stronger at the gym but I did not have much of a better idea than that. In two of my classes teachers introduced the idea of SMART goals. SMART is an acronym that stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time-bound. The SMART goal changed the way that I approached the semester and forever changed the way that I will approach life.
SMART goals are crucial to being successful because without them it is impossible to know if you truly reached your goals. To be successful you need to follow every part of the SMART acronym. Your goals need to be Specific because if they are not specific then you do not know what you are

In high school I would almost always start off the year strong and then slowly lose motivation as time passed and my grades would reflect that. SMART goals prevented this from happening in college. After learning about the goal setting technique I wrote down a few goals for the semester in relation to my schoolwork. I wanted to have a 3.5 gpa at the end of the year and I wanted to look back at the semester and know that I had put in as much effort as possible every day. The latter part of my goal was harder to measure but I was determined. I came up with a system that allowed me to judge my own output for the semester. At the end of every day I asked myself if I had truly done everything that I was supposed to and done it well. I kept track of my answered in a spreadsheet throughout the semester. At end of the semester I will look back and see how many days that I could have worked harder on and compare it to my grades. Setting goals for yourself creates an individual growth. In the article, “Why we are looking at the ‘value’ of college all wrong” by Valerie Strauss, Nelson discusses how an independent learner is able to teach themselves and learn from the challenges they tend to face. “The educated graduate is an independent learner…able to direct his or her own learning in accordance with the challenges that life presents in the circumstances of his or her own life.(Strauss 1)” For example, I want to become Registered Nurse; therefore, I write that down as one of my goals. However, I would then have to write everything else in order to become a Registered Nurse. Having a goal set that I want to become a RN, I now have something to strive at and to motivate myself to reach that goal. Therefore, creating goals helps establish what direction I am trying to go in, and also allows me to figure out how to solve a problem. Another example is if I failed a test, I will try to examine the errors within my work; however, I will then create a goal for myself to make sure I do better on test the next time. Finding the errors and creating goals to fix the errors makes me an independent learner. I am taking the charge that I want to do better; therefore, I am going to create a goal to help me succeed. The SMART goal I set for myself was to eat healthier by the end of the semester. In the early part of this semester, I was successful. I gathered information on foods that would be good for me to eat and snack on throughout the day and I had my grocery list written before I went into the store to not get sidetracked. However, as the semester progressed my eating habits lacked and no longer went to get groceries and often forgot to eat if I did not set a reminder or my grandmother brought food. The final aspect of setting SMART goals is that they must be time bound. Simply, it is necessary to have a deadline for which the goal must be completed. If the deadline is a long way off, set hallmarks along the way. This will contribute to measuring your success and help you to keep moving toward the ultimate goal (KPW, 2010). For example, I only have financial aid for a specific amount of time which means that I must take the time that is needed to pursue my degree because my course has a specific target date as to when everything should be complete.

Currently, my main goal is to graduate from East Carolina University with a bachelor’s degree of science in engineering with a concentration in biomedical engineering. My anticipated time to graduation is five years with a GPA of 3.5 or higher. I have lost track of how long I’ve been doing this goal but I know that it has not been going well. However, I suppose that depends on perspective. As far as doing the goal goes, I’ve not been successful, but as far as learning from this experience, I have been extremely successful. I was supposed to be accomplishing a SMART goal. One goal is I want to see what I am capable of. I have a terrible habit where I doubt myself, and that doubt sometimes leads me missing out on life changing opportunities. There’s a saying that goes, “Doubt kills more dreams than future ever will” which really emphasizes how doubt is what makes us runs away from our hopes, goals, and dreams. We should always remember that goals are simply tools to focus your energy in positive direction and for you to work hard. We should also remember this always “don’t let your goals just be goals, work hard, do everything and anything to make that goal a reality” Success is something that we all want to achieve in our lives. Three of my personal SMART goals would be Specific, Measurable, and Realistic. Being Specific is a must because I have learned that whatever you put your mind to do, you can do it. If I want to make an “A” in University Success, then I know I must do my work and push to make that “A” rather than saying I want a good grade. Specific goes along with my reason for attending college. I have specific goals in life that I would love to complete and therefore I have to do the work that comes along with it. I learned that if there is something that you want to achieve, you have to be constantly driven, diligent, and persistent. There has to be a vision, a reminder in your mind that makes you feel that you need to study or that you need to do your homework because that will serve as a motivation to reach your goals. When I set my SMART goal in order to increase my physical activity, the goal was to feel better about myself and to have a clearer mind so that I could do well with my studies this resulted in increasing my physical health and wellness. There were a few challenges of having to force myself to get out of bed even though I was feeling really anxious. I think when making a SMART goal and changing that particular behaviour there will be changes that need to be faced and overcome. These might include psychological, family and work commitments, health challenges and many other duties. Starting with my academic goal of making it into the Honor Society, the first step of accomplishing this using the SMART system would be to specify my exact goal. I have always wanted to make good grades but I never really set any goals but, then I realized that setting academic goals are way more important than people realize . I then started to set goals like my sophomore year of high school after I did that it really helped me focus on my future and what I wanted for myself. My goals I think pushed me so much more academically they opened my eyes a little bit more. One Goal I set was to graduate High school with a Core 40 diploma, which I did, so that is one goal down and a bunch more to go. My senior year I started applying to college but my main goal was to make into Saint Mary-of-the Woods and when I received my acceptance letter I was ecstatic. When I create a goal I always write down whether the goal is actually SMART, if I find that the goal is not “SMART” than I add all of the attributes of a SMART goal to it. In setting a goal, you set up a grand goal and then you break it down into smaller goals. This helps you to further monitor your progress on a smaller scale and helps you stay motivated and focused because each time you achieve one of the smaller goals, it keeps you inspired to achieve the grand goal.
