Culture autobiography
Culture and society
In Rwanda different from some other countries, we all strive to have one single culture, which is simply known as the Rwandan culture. However, due to the problems of Tutsi Genocide in 1994, Rwandans have immigrated to other countries. Those who went to other countries, came back to Rwanda having adopted to other countries’ cultures and beliefs. For example, people called Abanyamurenge, who shifted to DRC, came back with different beliefs and different cultural practices. Some of these differences includes having their own type of favorite food, which is thought as the best food according to them. This food is called kawunga, which is the maze flour. For example, you cannot call your parent their name. This is mostly seen as a sign of disrespect in most Rwandan families. Another thing that you cannot expect to see, is a visit of the bride’s mother to the family of her daughter. This is seen as bad luck, and in order to visit the house they should be a ceremony and other people should be invited. If the mother or father of the family goes to the house of their children before that party, it is seen as a sign of bad luck and it is considered as the most dangerous thing.
Cultural norms
The Rwandan culture has norms like all other cultures. Some of the Rwandan norms were establish by our ancestors. In my opinion some norms still have value, but others do not make sense in today’s world. Some of the norms that I believe should keep guiding us, includes the fact that no young children should sit when an old man is standing. Being in taxi, or at your house, Rwandans do not expect someone young to relax in a sit, while an old man is standing up. Some of other norms that Rwandans have includes not allowing women to talk in a meeting with men. Which is something that is being revised and changed.
