In some cases, if a President is well liked, they may be reelected to serve another term; but may only be in office for two consecutive terms (8 years). One of the few Presidents that held off a total of 8 years was President Ronald Reagan. He was the 40th President to be sworn into office, and at the time was the oldest to ever serve this country. When Reagan took office in 1980, he had many hopes and dreams to turn America into a great nation, and get America back on track. He fulfilled his goals and dreams for America and is highly regarded still to this day. He left office with great shoes to fill, and is looked back on as a great American leader. Enacting prohibition in a culture so immersed in alcohol as America was not easy. American had long been a nation of strong social drinkers with a strong feeling towards personal freedom. As Okrent remarks, “George Washington had a still on his farm. James Madison downed a pint of whiskey a day”. This was an era when drinking liquor on ships was far safer than the stale scummy water aboard, and it was common fo...
President Lincoln was elected into presidency at a horrible time for the country but he still fought to do the best he could. After the civil war the main focus of Lincoln was to rebuild the North but still keep the South happy. His plans consisted of making the North's reconstruction a main focal point and distributing 10% of the damages done to the south to aid their reconstruction. President Lincoln thought that the states that seceded last should be given less guilt than the ones who seceded first. He gave more money to Arkansas, Louisiana, Tennessee, and Virginia and he treated them better because they were the last to secede. Along with his plans for reconstruction came the Radical Republicans who were a small minority in congress. They were very strict on giving all rights to African Americans and wanted to punish the south. All of these ideas and plans for Lincoln were all good ideas and could have been successful but they came to an abrupt end when Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth in 1865.
Rutherford Bichard Hayes was not a well know president. He was not president that had the opportunity to lead us through a war. He was not a president that would draw much attention to the public eye. The United States was just coming out of the Civil War and was in need of a new president. They were in need of one that could lead them into a booming economic system, start the process of paying off the national debt, and show them the benefits of a nation-wide unification of the North and the South.
American politics was dominated by the democrat during the 1920’s and the idea of isolationism was running it. But in 1919 President Wilson had passed the 18th Amendment which put a ban to the production and distribution of alcohol. To ensure the ban the Volstead Act was also added into the play, allowing states to ban the consumption of alcohol. Wilson was pressured into passing the Amendment; he had plans of vetoing the amendment foreseeing it would fail. His veto was overturned by Congress which then passed the legislation.
In the end Theodore Roosevelt handled the Coal Strike of 1902 in a very intelligent manner. For the first time in American history, a president didn’t side with the business owners (David Kennedy). He also set a precedent for handling future strikes. Negotiation was now the preferred way to handle a strike (Grossman). Roosevelt said in a speech during the strike, “I speak for neither the operators nor the miners but for the general public (Grossman).” The federal government was now tasked with the responsibility of protecting the interests of the public during a strike.

“What America needs now is a drink,” declared President Franklin D. Roosevelt at the end of the Prohibition. The Prohibition was the legal prohibiting of the manufacture and sale of alcohol. The Prohibition came with unintended effects such as the Age of Gangsterism, loopholes around the law, and negative impacts on the economy.
Abraham Lincoln is regarded by many Americans as the greatest president to ever hold office in the history of the United States, and his reputation is definitely well deserved. Lincoln wasn't scared to stand up and fight for what he knew was right. He was convinced that within the branches of government, the presidency alone was empowered not only to uphold the Constitution, but also to protect, and defend it. That November, Lincoln gave his famous Gettysburg Address, which stated how a country must be dedicated to human freedom in order to survive. He dedicated the battlefield to the soldiers who had perished, and called on the living to finish the task the dead soldiers had begun. (Donald, 1995) Lincoln believed that democracy could be a lasting form of government. He showed a nobility of character that had worldwide appeal, and he was a man of great integrity. In 1902, there was a strike among the United Mine Workers. The workers were protesting against the unsafe working conditions they were forced under and the unreasonable work hours and pay. Coal miners would work very long hours with hard physical labor in the dark for little pay and almost no job security. Strike was seen as the only option because the mine owners did not listen to their workers. After seeing a coal shortage, the President personally intervened. Although his attempt to bring the sides together failed, representatives from the coal miners and the coal operators later met. A union was formed between the two and there was a 10% wage increase and a decrease in daily working hou...
