Today, we gather to reflect on a story of incredible faith and unwavering commitment—one that unfolds in the Book of Ruth. It is a story that reminds us of God's providence, the power of loyalty, and the beauty of steadfast faith in the face of adversity. The Context: Ruth's story begins in a time of great hardship. Israel was in the midst of a famine, and Elimelech, a man from Bethlehem, took his family to Moab in search of food. While in Moab, Elimelech died, and his two sons, Mahlon and Chilion, also passed away, leaving behind their widowed wives, Orpah and Ruth. Naomi urged her daughters-in-law to return to their own families, find new husbands and rebuild their lives. Orpah reluctantly agreed and returned to her people, but Ruth made a profound choice. She said to Naomi: "Don’t urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go, I will go; where you stay, I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God. Where you die, I will die, and there I will be buried." (Ruth 1:16-17, NIV) In these words, Ruth expressed a commitment that transcended personal loss and cultural norms.
