Recommended: Advantage of running
You may think I only run to stay in shape, but to me running is a lifestyle that happens to come with benefits. I solemnly believe we were all born to run. Running traces all the way back to caveman times where scientists believe they ran down their food. “Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up, it knows it must outrun the fastest lion or it will be killed. Every morning in Africa, a lion wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the slowest gazelle, or it will starve. It doesn't matter whether you're the lion or a gazelle-when the sun comes up, you'd better be running.” -Christopher McDougall. To be a successful runner you must overstep boundaries physically and mentally. It takes months or even years of training to be able to withstand …show more content…
Astonishingly, that’s only the mental part of training; the actual physical side of it is where the fun begins. I have come to find out that serious runners get up before breakfast and train till their hearts content. After the last school bell rings, do you know where the serious runners are going? They are going to train again. Fast forward a couple hours and it’s bedtime and as the serious runners lay in bed, do you know what they think about? How they can’t wait to join other runners and glide across the mountain tops the next morning. Even typing this makes me want to go run. You don’t have to be slender to enjoy running, because right at this moment the heaviest of heavy elephants is running in a tall open field enjoying every minute of it. Do you know why? Because we were all born to …show more content…
Just sit back and think for a moment; did our great ancestors have Nike shoes? If you answered yes then you might want to go take a history class. You don’t need to rely on false gimmicks for your new personal record. You need to rely on you, and that’s what I think a lot of runners, including myself, have trouble doing. You came into this world with shoes attached to the ends of your legs so why add more? Just be happy with what God gave you and
They race against themselves: to conquer their wills, to transcend their weaknesses, to beat back their nightmares" (603). This quotation shows that running is not always competition, but it helps runners overcome their
Have you ever felt stuck? Wherever you are, it’s the absolute last place you want to be. In the book Into the Wild, Chris McCandless feels stuck just like the average everyday person may feel. Chris finds his escape plan to the situation and feels he will free himself by going off to the wild. I agree with the author that Chris McCandless wasn’t a crazy person, a sociopath, or an outcast because he got along with many people very well, but he did seem somewhat incompetent, even though he survived for quite some time.
inspire people through running, as it states on their website at nyrr.org “Running takes your
Running is not easy, but most Saturday mornings in the summer, I convince myself to step outside and test the strength of my heart by running a few miles. Half-Marathon US Champion Julia Stamps once stated, “Running away, can also be running toward something.” That is exactly what I do. When I start running away from my house, I end up running towards a specific destination. Two miles in, I stop at my destination to enjoy the view of Ted Grinter’s
The definition of grit is simple; it means being passionate about long term goals, and showing stamina to pursue them, but should students in public schools have a class dedicated to a grit-focused curriculum? This has become a major topic of discussion among teachers and mentors. Angela Duckworth, a professor of psychology at the University of Pennsylvania, claims grit is not a fixed quality but one that can be developed. Many disagree with her statement. Grit is something everyone all have within themselves, but some just do not utilize this characteristic as often or as well as others. Grit is a puzzling concept. Duckworth has had an obsession with grit for over a decade. Her obsession started when she visited West Point,
I signed up to run track in the spring and went to summer conditioning for cross country. That’s when my coaches, teammates, and myself noticed that my running has improved significantly from when I first started. I knew that I had to work hard my senior year to achieve my goals for running. Running is a mental sport. The workouts I had to do were brutally painful and I had stay positive throughout the run because I know the training I had to do will help me during a race.
A sprinter runs for the finish line, a basketball player dashes toward the hoop, a baseball player sprints for home plate, and a soccer player dashes toward the goal. All of these sports have one thing in common: the players are all running towards a goal. Everyone is running at one point or another in his or her lifetime. Whether someone is running toward a specific dream or away from a horrific nightmare, running is a part of life. Profuse amounts effort must be put in the run to get to the finish line.
Inequality and prejudice has been around for as long as the country has been founded. Beginning as a social construct, arbitrary differences, be it sexual orientation, age, and or handicapped status, have been pointed out and discriminated against. Many advocate for stricter guidelines to be placed on new laws that might seem offense and or discriminatory. This is referred to as Strict Scrutiny and it is deemed as a necessity by some in order to remain a progressive society. This means that before a law can be made it must undergo carefully inspection by the Supreme Court. (180-181) I believe that this argument does have merit and should be the standard for these types of laws, as well as in general.
“A race is like a work of art that people can look at and be affected by in as many ways as they’re capable of understanding.”(70) Here the author quotes Steve Prefontaine, and in this quote it explains that humans can enjoy and appreciate running with there minds and feeling, unlike animals. “I’m moved by others dreams and by their devotion and courage in the pursuit of excellence. I get choked up when I see a kid or anyone else, fighting against hopeless odds. Someone who goes out there to run the lonely roads with a dream in the heart, a gleam in the eye, and a goal in mind.”(74) Then, later on the author concludes that completing a race is not about having a fit and healthy body, but a dream, an “antelope”, or a goal in mind. To back that up, is the mental courage to fight for your dream, your
“Man masters nature not by force but by understanding. This is why science has succeeded where magic failed: because it has looked for no spell to cast over nature”. From the beginning of time man and nature has been in conflict with one another because, as a whole, there is no cooperating. Each one tirelessly wants its way. The Man is fighting for dominance and nature w never yielding its authority. In American Literature, many authors illustrate this theme in their writing. Specifically the writers Jack London in The Law Of Life, Stephen Crane The Open Boat and Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Fin. Each explores the relationship between humans and nature but with slightly different methods. Mark Twain uses nature in a realistic way, Jack London in a naturalistic way and Stephen Crane constitutes a combination of both.
Standing at the starting line of the race there are hundreds of other runners that surround me. As my eyes search the mass of people and I can clearly see how each one of these runners differ from the others. Some of the most distinguishable in the crowd are the Overly Dedicated, the Average Runner, and the #runner. All of these types help to create the great diversity of runners with their distinctive qualities and their imaginative views towards the running world. Starting with the most fanatical of the bunch the Overly Dedicated comes into play.
What makes a good person good? According to WikiHow, "We should learn to define our own morals ourselves. One of the simplest ways to do so is to love others, and treat them as you would like to be treated. Try to think of others before yourself. Even doing small things daily will greatly enrich and improve your life, and the lives of others around you." This quote shows us what we need to do in order to be what society thinks as, “good". In order to be a good person, you have to do good and moral things in your society consistently. However people might think that by doing one good thing once in a while will automatically make you a “good person”, but in reality it doesn’t.
“Is it hard to get in the zone?” “Do you suffer from a lack of stamina or endurance?” “Do you want to have better focus?” If you want to run your best, you have to have a strong mind.
