could not get a job, he moved to the United States at the age of 18. Once Valentino was in New York City, he ran out of money and had to live on the streets.
During this time he obtained unusual jobs such as being a bus boy and a gardener. Finally he found a job as a hired dance partner at Maxim’s. However, after being involved in a political scandal, Valentino headed west with a traveling operetta group which left him in Utah. Then he joined a company which left him in San Francisco. While in San Francisco, he met an actor who convinced him to try acting. After meeting this actor, he moved to Los Angeles and began to work towards a career in film. In the beginning, Valentino played gangsters in films, but he was not happy with these roles, so he moved back to New York. Now that he was a popular male lead, he was able to obtain better roles. From this point onward, Valentino had many roles in films and became greatly successful. Unfortunately, he died at the age of 31 as a result of peritonitis. Even though Valentino died at a young age, he still accomplished many things in the short time that he
had. During his 12 year long film career, he starred in about 36 films. Some of his more popular films were The Married Virgin, Stolen Moments, Blood and Sand, The Young Rajah, and of course The Eagle and The Son of The Sheik. Valentino’s success shows how anybody could become successful during the 1920s. It showed that young people, immigrants, and even unaccomplished students could be successful. The many groups that could be successful show how the American Dream was attainable in the 1920s. This is part of the 1920s lasting impact as a time when almost everyone had opportunities. Being a pop icon also shows how almost everyone had opportunities in the 1920s, even people with many different jobs. Finally, Valentino being a sex symbol shows how the morals of the 1920s were very different than the morals from the early 1900s. It shows that people of the 1920s praised people for being “bad”. The people who were popular then were gangsters and famous bad boys. Valentino was known as a Hollywood bad boy, and this made him even more popular.
